Estimates from the Social Security Administration found that 97% of adults over the age of 60 are either collecting or will start collecting Social Security. As of February 2023, about one in every five residents in the US collected benefits from these funds. For such a widely used program, it’s a bit surprising that people in the US know so little about how it works. To be fair, most of the news around this program over the past decade has been about how it’s doomed in one way or another. Millennials and younger may see the money being taxed from their paychecks and believe they’ll probably never see it again, but is the program really destined to fail? And what do we stand to lose if it does? Check out the video above to get the most basic facts about Social Security in the United States and what to expect in the coming years.
The answer to the question is "not until 2033 at current rates" and even then, "not really." Eighty percent of current benefits would not be a good outcome, but it's definitely not nothing. As for the solutions that would maintain current levels of benefits, the one I'm most familiar with is increasing the cap on income being taxed. I'm O.K. with that, but that's because I don't quite earn enough to have the payroll tax not deducted from my final paycheck of the year. Even if I did, I might want that money after I retire, which I plan on doing in December 2026. As for taxing investment income, that's something I hadn't considered, but I'd like even more if it could happen. Good luck making that happen with the current House of Representatives, although it wouldn't be them doing it anyway. I expect nothing will happen until 2029 at the earliest.

Since this video deals with the intersection among demographics, economy, and government, it's something I'd be tempted to show my students as part of the unit on population I'm teaching right now. It even features an animated age structure. Unfortunately, it has an ad in the middle of it. I'm not showing that to my students!
Between these two and the stars of Wicked, the Motion Picture Academy and ABC are not missing any opportunity to promote their upcoming releases — except for Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, stars of Deadpool & Wolverine. Maybe the Academy and Disney didn't think the movie needed them as presenters. *Shrug*
Now to do for the Gold Derby predictions I included in Grammys, other awards, and Oscar nominations for 'Barbie' on Barbie Day that I did last year in 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' earns seven Academy Awards at a history-making ceremony, see how they fared.
Score 20 out of 23 or 87%. Better than last year, but that's because I was grading my predictions based on Gold Derby's, not Gold Derby's directly, and I gave half credit for the second choice winning. Still, it's enough to convince me to keep using the site's editors and experts.

I'm being a good environmentalist by recycling my closing from the Barbie Day post.
Looks like Barbie is guaranteed to win only one Oscar for Best Song, while it has outside chances of winning Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Today's topic comes from PBS Terra, which asks What Happens When Demographics Change Forever?

Are we on the brink of population collapse? Some economists and tech billionaires (like Elon Musk) think so. After all, birth rates are declining, and some argue an aging population could strain social services and hurt the economy. (On the other hand, some say, slower population growth could be more sustainable for our environment.) Whichever argument you sympathize with, here's a key thing to understand about this trend: Demographers predicted it. In fact, they've been expecting for years. Their advice? Don’t freak out. Here’s what changing demographics might mean for our planet and the future.
Like NOVA warns of 'The Next Pompeii' for the Ides of March, this video covers a story I tell my students, this time one about population. In fact, I just added this video to the PowerPoint for that lecture and plan on showing it to my environmental science class on Tuesday. They'll see it right before the first video in Vox and CNBC explain 'Why China's population is shrinking' and 'What [it] Means For The Global Economy'. I hope they don't find it too repetitive.

Speaking of being repetitive, I'm being a good environmentalist by recycling two points from CNBC asks 'Is The U.S. Running Out Of People?'
Second, increased population is bad for the environment, as expressed by the variable P in I=P*A*T "where I is impact, P is population, A is affluence, and T is technology." Impact increases as both population and affluence increases; both drive up demand for resources and create more waste and pollution. Therefore, keeping population down will help the environment. By keeping human population below the carrying capacity for our species, it helps people as well.

Third, increasing educational and economic opportunities for women is the number one way to decrease birth rates and keep them down, although increasing economic security might put a floor under the declining birth rates. Women's education and a stronger economy will also increase affluence, which will increase impact if more efficient technologies don't counteract both affluence and population.
The video makes both of these points, which I hope my students absorb.

I close by repeating what I worried about six years ago and have repeated several times since.
I have been in favor of zero population growth for as long as I can remember. However, I'm not sure the U.S. economy is set up for a stable or slowly declining population, a point I made in the Hipcrime Vocab: Why Slowing Population Growth is a Problem. We are going to have to figure how to do so. Otherwise, I might live long enough to experience the wisdom of the saying "Be careful what you wish for; you might get it."

(Aired February 20, 2019)
...
In the shadow of Italy’s Vesuvius, a lesser-known volcano rumbles: Campi Flegrei. An eruption could endanger the millions of residents of the city of Naples. Scientists gain new insights into what happened in nearby Pompeii, and dig into the unique geology of Campi Flegrei. How will they know if the ever-shifting ground is reaching a breaking point? And can an innovative eruption warning system prevent Naples becoming the next Pompeii?
This episode contains several stories I tell my students, although I learned new things about nearly every one of them to update my lessons. The first one I describe to my geology students is the principle volcanologist Giuseppe Mastrolorenzo states, that processes that happened in the past are likely to repeat in the future, so understanding the past is essential for preparation. This is a key takeaway from uniformitarianism, the concept that everything we see in nature is the result of everyday processes occurring over sufficient time, which is boiled down to "the present is the key to the past." It also means that the past is the key to the future.*

The second story I show is of the Macellum of Pozzuoli, the Roman marketplace with the three columns containing holes from boring clams showing that they had been submerged and then lifted out of the sea. These appear in the frontispiece of Principles of Geology by Charles Lyell, the first geology textbook, as examples of processes acting over sufficient time lowering and then raising the ground the pillars stood on. I had never seen photographs of them, but I recognized them instantly from the illustration.

Both of the above appear in the second lecture of my geology course. The rest appear three lectures later, when I discuss volcanoes, beginning with my describing calderas. I use Mount St. Helens, Crater Lake, and Yellowstone as examples, but Campi Flegrei works just as well for explaining the mechanism of caldera formation. I also describe pyroclastic flows and Plinian eruptions, employing Mount Pinatubo and Mount Pelée as examples. In fact, I recognized some of the clips of vehicles fleeing pyroclastic flows as videos of Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1992. I also recognized the cause of the earliest deaths in Pompeii from Mount Pinatubo, as the roofs collapsed at U.S. military bases nearby from the weight of the ash. At least there, the Navy and Air Force had evacuated everyone.

Finally, using seismic waves to map the interior of the planet is a topic I include in my lecture about earthquakes. Using the sound of crashing waves to do so is something I may have encountered before, but it didn't stick. I'm sure it stuck this time, meaning I learned something new. It's always a good day when I learn something new, especially when I can share it with my students. Speaking of which, I will recommend this video to them. I hope they, along with my readers, find it as fascinating as I did.

I close with Garbage's cover of Siouxie and the Banshees song about the eruption of Vesuvius and destruction of Pompeii I embedded in Two songs about Pompeii and a volcano drink for the Ides of March six years ago, Cities in Dust.
I agree. As soon as I heard this, I penciled it in for today's post.

*This reminds me of "Who controls the past, controls the future: who controls the present, controls the past" from 1984. It's time to acknowledge last year's worst films, so watch 44th Annual Razzie Awards Hosted by The Mean Gays.

The Mean Gays Take Over The 44th Razzies®

For this year’s version of Tinseltown’s Most Notorious Trophy Derby, the 44th Annual Razzies® Awards co-founders dared something new.

Under the production banner of Evan Mirzai and House of M, viral comedic personalities The Mean Gays (Aaron Goldenberg & Jake Jonez) act as hosts, writers and producers of this year's 44th Razzie digital ceremony entitled THE MEAN GAYS TAKE OVER THE 44th RAZZIES®.
While Exorcist: Believer and Expend4bles tied for most Razzie nominations with seven each, neither was the big "winner." That dishonor went to Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, which took five Golden Raspberries home for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screen Combo, Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, and Worst Screenplay. Expend4bles walked off the virtual platform with two Razzies, Worst Supporting Actor for Sylvester Stallone and Worst Supporting Actress for Megan Fox. Fox earned a second statuette for Worst Actress in Johnny & Clyde. I predicted as much in Colbert, Meyers, and 'The Daily Show' take closer looks at Supreme Court hearing immunity appeal.
Mocking Seth doing his job by promoting Shazam! Fury of the Gods reminded me that the film earned four Razzie nominations, although two of those are for Helen Mirren in Worst Actress and Lucy Liu in Worst Supporting Actress. Hey, those two are the only reasons I want to watch the film! At least I don't think either will win — Megan Fox could easily win both categories — but Gold Derby hasn't opened up odds for this year's Razzies — yet.
And Fox won both actress categories. No surprise there, no thanks to Gold Derby, which never did post odds for this year's Razzies.

While I mocked the Golden Raspberries for their bad math skills for missing that Exorcist: Believer and Expend4bles tied for most Razzie nominations, instead reporting that Expend4bles had the most nominations by itself, they did feature the worse film, as Exorcist: Believer took home no Razzies. I'll give them that much, even if it was by mistake.

Finally, Jon Voight "won" Worst Actor for Mercy — I enjoyed the snide aside that MAGA doesn't mean "Make Acting Great Again" — and Fran Drescher won Razzie Redeemer "for her brilliant shepherding of the actors' guild through a prolonged 2023 strike with a successful conclusion." Congratulations!

I'm already looking ahead to next year's nominees, as I wrote in 'SNL' mocks 'Biden is old' in 'Inside Politics' cold open.
I'm a little worried for Sweeney for reasons that I mentioned in 'SNL' tackles E. Jean Carroll judgment, DeSantis endorsement, Nikki Haley, and more — "here's to hoping Madame Web doesn't earn at least one Razzie Award nomination next year and Johnson doesn't earn one as well for her role." I'm afraid Madame Web will earn multiple Razzie nominations and might even win some of them. I just hope Sweeney escapes being nominated.
The only thing that might save Madame Web is that Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 is coming out this year. I'm sure that will be worse, not bad enough to prevent nominations for Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, but bad enough to win, although the original earned no acting nominations.

I'm going in alphabetical order by state, which happens to be by poll closing time east to west, followed by a non-North American drum corps and Rose Parade band to represent Democrats Abroad. I kick off the music to watch and listen while waiting for results with with Spirit of Atlanta | #DCI2021 | "Bottle Tree" from Drum Corps International (DCI).
That makes this advertising, but I'm O.K. with that.

Georgia also has an all-age corps, Atlanta CV. Watch Atlanta CV Drum & Bugle Corps 2018 Show Clip By Box5TV, an official clip from Drum Corps Associates.

Two bands from Georgia made the finals of Metallica's marching band contest. I begin with the medium high school finalist from the Peach State, Kell High School from Kennesaw, GA. Here they are, playing Heavy Metals.

This show is from 2022, so they played it a year before the contest. Prescient!

Now Georgia's large high school finalist, Lambert High School from Suwanee.

I'm sure this is the show, but I'm not sure this is the official submission. Still, great performance!

Moving west to Mississippi, I'm sharing the band that converted me into a fan of HBCU bands, Jackson State University | ESPN Band of the Year National Competition | Usher Tribute from JSU Bands.

As a former marching band judge, I can see why.

Now for the most recent Rose Parade band from the Magnolia State, West West Harrison High School Marching Band - 2020 Pasadena Bandfest from Music213.

This includes "Paint It Black," which sounds like it was inspired by the version in Westworld.

Now to move to the Pacific Time Zone and the two corps and a band from Washington state, beginning with Columbians | #DCI2023 | Face Everything And Rise, which DCI uploaded overnight. Just in time!

Tri-Cities, Washington's Columbians perform a segment from the corps' #DCI2023 production, "Face Everything And Rise," during the 2023 DCI World Championships hosted August 10-12 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Tri-Cities, WA | 24th Place | 74.600
Not bad for a corps that hadn't appeared at DCI Championships before!

Now the other corps from the Evergreen State, Seattle Cascades | #DCI2023 | Revival | Revival (Interlude) - Eminem.

Now for a band that entered in the Metallica contest, but didn't make the finals, Husky Marching Band | Washington vs. Texas - Allstate Sugar Bowl | Husky Band Rocks Metallica.

The Husky Band rocks the Superdome and the Sugar Bowl with music by Metallica!
Priorities.

I conclude by continuing to travel west, where I'm sharing two units from Japan to represent Democrats Abroad, beginning with Toho Marching Band - 2024 Pasadena Rose Parade.

From Nagoya, Aichi, Japan, Toho High School Marching Band performing at the 135th Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on Monday, January 1, 2024. This is their second Rose Parade appearance, having last appeared in 2016.
Now that's a turn!

That was the final band. Now the final drum corps for today, 2022 DCJ The28th ALL JAPAN CHAMPIONSHIPS THE YOKOHAMA SCOUTS.

Division. 1
ABC 7 News - WJLA in Washington, D.C., observed the occasion with 7News marks 4 years since COVID-19 pandemic declaration with survivor's harrowing tales.

Four years later, 7News is reflecting on how the pandemic impacted local communities.
That's a graphic and terrifying retrospective of how fast the disease spread, how much it disrupted everyday life, and how that felt to everyone affected. I had half-forgotten all of that, but realized how important it was to be reminded. The last time I felt like that was watching the opening of season 2 of The Morning Show, when my reaction was "You poor people. You have no idea what you're in for."

That's the past. Fox 5 New York described the effects of the pandemic on the present when it asked COVID-19: 4 years later: Where are we now?
The good news is that we are better able to protect ourselves against COVID-19. The bad news is that people have become more vaccine-skeptical, not only about the COVID-19 vaccines, but about the MMR vaccine as well. That's led to a measles outbreak. WDIV talks about all of the above in 4 years of COVID: Michigan's top doctor on COVID today, measles & more.
I live in Metro Detroit, so of course I'd include a local report when I can find a good one, even if it was about bad news.

Vaccine skepticism is not the only bad effect of the reaction to the pandemic. MSNBC uploaded ‘COVID stole our optimism’: Reminding Americans how bad things were four years ago.

Weekend Update had no entertainment news and no interviews, which meant that it ignored tonight's Oscars, an easy target. Happy National Barbie Day! "On March 9th, National Barbie Day celebrates an iconic toy that premiered on this day in 1959. Barbie debuted at the American International Toy Fair in New York." Happy 65th birthday, Barbie!

As I wrote yesterday I plan on celebrating by examining Barbie's Oscar nominations and awards show wins, including at the Grammys. Follow over the jump.
As the image above shows, Barbie won three Grammys, Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media for Barbie The Album and Song Of The Year and Best Song Written For Visual Media for Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For?" The big surprise is Song Of The Year, as none of the Gold Derby editors had picked it to win in December.
Six editors have also selected Swift to win Song of the Year. Four picked Cyrus for "Flowers" and one has SZA's "Kill Bill" as her choice. That editor is Joyce Eng, which means I have to take the possibility seriously.
Their latest predictions show that three changed their top choice to "What Was I Made For?" Six stayed on Swift, while one each switched to Jon Batiste's "Butterfly" and Olivia Rodrigo's "Vampire." Congratulations to the three editors who made the correct choice, to say nothing of Billie Eilish and Mark Ronson! Speaking of whom, watch BILLIE EILISH Wins Song Of The Year For "WHAT WAS I MADE FOR?" | 2024 GRAMMYs Acceptance Speech from the Recording Academy.
Barbie won the two categories where there was no significant dispute among Gold Derby editors and experts, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Song, Motion Picture. Again, congratulations to Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig, and the rest of the movie's producers and to Billie Eilish and her brother Fineas. Barbie had its best awards performance at the Critics' Choice Awards, winning the seven awards listed in the graphic above. I found three acceptance speeches at the Critics Choice YouTube channel and I begin with Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig Barbie Acceptance Speech at The 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards.
All of the editors expected that one of the three nominees from Barbie would win Best Song, but they still got a big surprise because they unanimously chose "What Was I Made For?" Instead, "I'm Just Ken" wins Best Song at the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards. Surprise!
I mentioned that Barbie won the Hollywood Creative Association (HCA) Award for most anticipated film of the year. Since then, the HCA renamed its awards the Astra Awards, and Barbie won eight of them, Best Picture, Best Actress for Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, and Best Original Screenplay for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach at the main ceremony and Best Publicity Campaign, Best Production Design, Best Original Song for "I'm Just Ken," and Best Casting at the Creative Arts ceremony. Great speech thanking all of the creative people involved in the making of the film! Too bad she's unlikely to give one like it at the Oscars.

Watching this reminds me that Barbie also won three Saturn Awards, but I'm going to have to make my own image for that, so I'm saving it for the first retrospective post of the thirteenth year of this blog the last week of this month.

BAFTA completely shut Barbie out, but the People's Choice Awards gave the movie and one of its songs six awards the same night, The Movie of the Year, The Comedy Movie of the Year, The Male Movie Star of the Year for Ryan Gosling, The Female Movie Star of the Year for Margot Robbie, The Movie Performance of the Year for America Ferrera, and The Collaboration Song of the Year for "Barbie World" – Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice with Aqua. Robbie, Gerwig, and Gosling were all in London losing, but Ferrera and Ice Spice were at the People's Choice Awards to accept. Watch their acceptance speeches starting with America Ferrera Wins the People's Movie Performance | People's Choice Awards 2024 | NBC with Billie Eilish presenting on NBC.
Notice Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj playing in the background as Ferrera ascends the stage. Theirs was the only song from Barbie to win a People's Choice Award, although it wasn't the only one nominated. "Dance The Night" by Dua Lipa earned a nomination for The Song of the Year, which she lost to Olivia Rodrigo's "Vampire." "What Was I Made For?" Not even nominated. As I wrote in November, "I know which one is more likely to win the People's Choice Award!" Don't feel sorry for Eilish, though. In addition to presenting, she won The TV Performance of the Year for Swarm. Congratulations!
Looks like Barbie is guaranteed to win only one Oscar for Best Song, while it has outside chances of winning Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Sigh. That's sad, and enough to make me close by sharing the likely Oscar winner and a song that always makes me cry, Watch BILLIE EILISH AND FINNEAS Perform "WHAT WAS I MADE FOR?” at the 2024 GRAMMYs.
India's WION (World Is One News) uploaded a series of videos for today, beginning with International women's day 2024: Inventions by women that the world can't live without.

Here is our tribute to some women who were not afraid to stand up for the respect and credit they rightfully deserved.
I knew that Hedy Lamarr invented the technology that made cell phones possible, but I didn't know that it also made Wi-Fi and Bluetooth possible as well. I did not know about the rest, although that photo of Margaret Wilcox looks much too recent for an inventor active in the 1890s. Still, it's the one that I find when I search for her name. There may be an attribution issue in the history of her portrait, but I'm not going to look for it today. Just the same, I learned a lot just from this video, and it's always a good day when I learn something new.

Follow over the jump for the rest of WION's videos for International Women's Day, which do double duty for Women's History Month.
WION's next video for today is Women's Day 2024: Tribute to female directors and their trailblazing work.
Stay tuned.

In the meantime, watch the rest of WION's videos, which resumed with International Women's Day 2024: Women and their language of leisure.

How do they enjoy their free time? Most importantly, do women have as much free time as men do, to sit back and relax? These are some of the questions Surabhi Yadav is trying to explore through her Instagram page called – Project Basanti: Women at Leisure. The social media page is a repository of pictures and videos that exhibit and celebrate the fleetingly unguarded moments of women’s leisure. What do my readers think of it?

I conclude with Women's Day 2024: Honouring trailblazing women architects | Eulie Chaudhary's enduring legacy.
WION's Nikita Singh brings you this special segment on Women's day 2024. Watch to know more!
I haven't written about human architecture since CNBC explains the problems of suburbia and their possible solutions nearly two full years ago. No surprise, I mentioned James Howard Kunstler in that entry. He has an "Eyesore of the Month" feature on his blog about ugly and/or unsustainable buildings. I stopped reading that when I stopped reading his blog entries in November 2019, so I'm not surprised that I have linked him and architecture here and ceased writing about both about the same time. It's about time I found a new reason to discuss the subject beyond him and dead malls. Thank you, WION!

That's it for today's celebration. As I wrote above, stay tuned for the Oscar coverage I promised at the end of '20 Days in Mariupol' and 'The ABCs of Book Banning' leading documentary nominees according to Gold Derby for Barbie Day!Pinku-Senseihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16247618351725715844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752611264465083204.post-14767784516132732962024-03-07T08:46:00.000-05:002024-03-07T08:46:07.710-05:00Boeing gets the John Oliver treatment on 'Last Week Tonight'It's Thursday, so it's time for me to embed Boeing: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO).
Given what's happened since, I agree with John Oliver and his writers that the wrong camel came out on top. The previous Boeing executives weren't the only ones screwed when that happened!

Among the casualties was the 787 Dreamliner. I wondered what happened to the plane and now I know! Another was the 737 Max, which was the subject of an Emmy-nominated documentary I covered in Emmy-nominated documentary 'Escape from Kabul' for the fall of Kabul two years later, Flight / Risk.
The 737 Max turned out to be less wonderful than when I shared a video promoting it in 2016. Even at the time, I called the video, which has since been made private, "Corporate salesmanship and greenwashing." That turned out to be not even the half of it.
That was before the door plug fell off the plane, which the monologue I embedded in Colbert and Meyers return from break to take closer looks at politicians saying stupid things about history and science mentioned as "Stephen describes a scary situation on a recent Boeing 737 flight." Now my snarky comment from eight years ago isn't even a third of it or maybe even a quarter! The wrong camels know corporate infighting and stock valuations, but they didn't learn from the company that acquired them how to build a quality aircraft.

That's it for today's exercise in corporate accountability disguised as comedy. CNN has the story in Nikki Haley will exit GOP presidential race, clearing path for Donald Trump.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will announce that she is exiting the Republican presidential race, according to sources familiar with her plans, clearing the path for former President Donald Trump.
I'm slightly surprised that she dropped out now, as she finally won two primaries, in D.C. on Sunday and Vermont last night. On the other hand, I can't say I'm actually disappointed, as I had tweeted in late January that she might drop out after losing South Carolina and would be lucky to last until Super Tuesday. Despite her primary victories, her luck and, more importantly, her money ran out.

With that, I'm recycling my reaction from 'SNL' opens with a Trump victory party after the South Carolina Republican Primary, itself an upcycled response.
I'm recycling my comment from George Santos sues Jimmy Kimmel and Trump sells sneakers for the other hand.
Nikki Haley is staying in for the same reasons Liz Cheney is opposing Trump: "As I wrote in July 2022, 'In Liz Cheney's case, she'd like her pre-2015 Republican Party back. I doubt she'll get it any time soon, so she'll settle for damaging TFG instead. I wish her luck.' She's certainly doing her best." Too bad her best won't be good enough to win the nomination.
But it might be enough to damage Trump. I hope she's happy with that. I know I am.
I think Haley will most likely end up endorsing Donald Trump, but it will be late and lukewarm when it occurs. A less likely scenario is that she ends up on the No Labels ticket, should they actually decide to run a candidate in the general election. If that happens, I wouldn't be surprised if Kyrsten Sinema joins her on that ticket, now that she's announced her retirement from the Senate. I might get to that news later.

That brings me to Morning Joe on MSNBC looking ahead in Mika: With Haley set to drop out, the general election essentially starts today.

The Morning Joe panel discusses Trump's latest inflammatory rhetoric and news that Nikki Haley is set to suspend her presidential campaign.
I agree, although I still plan on continuing my marching music for primaries and caucuses series. Those will go on, even if the presidential nominating contests are essentially over.

I might add a report on Haley's remarks later today. Until then, I'm concluding by retiring the graph I made for Haley in Marianne Williamson and Nikki Haley, two women running for President on International Women's Day.

She has an economic score of 88 and a social score of 25. On The Issues describes her as a Libertarian-Leaning Conservative. This makes her less conservative socially than either TFG or DeSantis, but to the right of both economically. TFG has an economic score of 83 and a social score of 20, while DeSantis has an economic score of 85 and a social Score of 13. On The Issues considers both of them to be Hard-Core Conservatives.
I'm also retiring, for now, the drink I suggested for her in FiveThirtyEight asks 'Who is Nikki Haley?'
I'm being a good environmentalist by recycling the South Carolina Swizzle Cocktail - The Proper Pour with Charlotte Voisey - Small Screen, which I used for Lindsey Graham.

Inspired by the delicious produce of South Carolina and Georgia, Charlotte created the South Carolina Swizzle Cocktail to celebrate one of her favorite regions of the United States.
Since I wrote that this is a marching music Super Tuesday and not a drum corps Super Tuesday, I'm embedding UMASS Minuteman Marching Band - 2018 Pasadena Rose Parade from Music213.

Time to move on from Massachusetts. Follow over the jump for drum corps and marching bands from the rest of the Super Tuesday states east of the Mississippi.

Traveling down the eastern seaboard, the next DCI competitive corps is Sonus Brass Theater - 2017 DCI SoundSport - Indianapolis, IN from Woodbridge, Virginia.
This is a group I should have featured four years ago, but I missed them. Darn.

I've been featuring bands that competed in Metallica's For Whom The Band Tolls in this series, so here is the small high school champion, Parade to Black - Oakton High School Marching Band from Oakton, Virginia.

Oakton High School Marching Band submission to "For Whom the Band Tolls" Metallica Competit[i]on[.]
I think the wigs alone won them their class in the contest.

North Carolina is an important state, but no longer has a competitive drum corps. It did, so I'm sharing Carolina Gold 2013 Mission Accepted.

Moving inland, I'm sharing two units from Tennessee, beginning with Music City Drum Corps 2022 Semi-Finals reaction from March Or Die TV.

This was a really cool show.
Next, from Kingsport, Tennessee, the large high school winner and high school fan favorite in the Metallica marching band contest, Dobyns-Bennett High School Marching Band Presents "The Music of Metallica".

Submission for the Metallica Marching Band Competition
The Dobyns-Bennett High School Marching Band knew exactly who the audience would be for this show — Metallica fans — and wrote the program according. It worked. Congratulations on the double title!

Continuing down to the Gulf Coast, six units from Alabama made the cut for today, beginning with 22nd Southwind 2023.

Sadly, Southwind will not be returning this summer. Sigh.

Next, the Division I college winner and college fan favorite in the Metallica marching band contest, Metallica Halftime Show [OFFICIAL] | AUMB 2023.

Our show opens with For Whom the Bell Tolls, one of Metallica’s greatest hits and the official title of their marching band video competition.

Our initial sound effects and the swinging-bell animation drill that follows are our attempt to recreate the opening of Metallica’s 2022 concert in São Paulo, Brazil. The show continues with their 1992 tour anthem, Wherever I May Roam. The middle segment of our show pays homage to Metallica’s legendary guitar skills with the title track from their 1986 album, Master of Puppets. Our show continues with one of Metallica’s most popular power ballads, Nothing Else Matters. And, of course, no Metallica tribute is complete without Enter Sandman.

The lighting system used by our band was built by Auburn band students with assistance from our College of Engineering. Many thanks to Ben Brisendine (Auburn band alumnus) for his work designing and updating our system and for his creative programming of the lighting component of our show.

We hope you enjoy the Auburn University Marching Band’s performance of Metallica!
That was an amazing assembly of lighting, technology, music, and showmanship! Well done!

I can't mention Auburn without including its archrival. Watch The University of Alabama Million Dollar Band - 2024 Pasadena Rose Parade from Luis of Music213.
I think Luis went to USC, whose marching band played on the original track and continues to play "Tusk." I wonder how he feels about this version. Maybe I should ask him.

Now for two finalists in the Metallica marching band contest from Alabama, beginning with Nothing Else Matters (Whole Show) by Pell City High School's Marching Band of Gold, a medium high school finalist.
It's time for a highlights post of last night's Saturday Night Live. I begin with Inside Politics Cold Open, where the cast makes fun of the "Biden is old" meme and the over-the-top efforts to combat it.

Dana Bash (Heidi Gardner) interviews Governor Gavin Newsom, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and Draymond Green (Michael Longfellow, Ego Nwodim, Marcello Hernández, Devon Walker) to address concerns about President Biden's age.
The biggest criticism of this skit I read in the comments was that Michael Longfellow didn't even try to imitate Gavin Newsom's distinctive gravelly voice and flair for the dramatic. I agree. Try harder next time. On the other hand, he and the other writers did capture Biden's actual accomplishments and the defenses Biden's surrogates use. As for "we all know the stakes," watch the first story in Weekend Update: Trump and Biden Visit Southern Border, McConnell to Step Down.

Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week's biggest news like Mitch McConnell announcing he's stepping down from Senate leadership at the end of the year.
"Swarmed by criminals and rapists" and "Trump, who looks good behind bars, by the way" — LOL, tell us how you really feel. Just the same, the bit does illustrate the stakes quite well. I'll take a slightly older Joe Biden over a slightly younger defendant who owes about half a billion dollars in fines and judgments and is facing 91 criminal charges.

Speaking of telling the audience how the writers really feel, I'll be relieved not to hear jokes about Mitch McConnell's cruelty after he steps down as Senate Minority Leader after the election, but until then, I'll laugh at them along with everyone else. Those jokes continued in Weekend Update: Flaco the Owl Dies, KFC Launches Fried Chicken Pizza.

Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week's biggest news, like Staten Island hosting a LGBTQ-friendly St. Patrick’s Day parade.
That's sad news about Flaco the Owl, who survived a year free (I don't know if I'd call Manhattan "in the wild"). The next segment features happier animal news, Charlotte the Stingray on Her Pregnancy.

Charlotte the Stingray (Ego Nwodim) stops by Weekend Update to discuss her mysterious pregnancy.
I have written that I'm a paleontologist many times over the past 13 years, but I haven't mentioned that my Ph.D. dissertation was on self-fertilization in snails since 2013, slightly more than eleven years ago to the day. I also studied parthenogenesis in snails and clams, so my mind went there as an explanation. I'm not alone in thinking this. The alternative is that Charlotte stored sperm from a mating before she was captured. That's another way she could be pregnant in isolation. We'll find out once her pups are born.

Follow over the jump for two clips featuring last night's host that tie into the themes of the previous two clips.

Continuing the animal theme, Sydney Sweeney stars in Air Bud.

A cheerleader (Sydney Sweeney) meets the new star basketball player.
Ha, ha, and woof!

Michael Che called Charlotte the Stingray's pregnancy "immaculate" and Sweeney drops the word, surprisingly appropriately, in her monologue.

First-time host Sydney Sweeney talks about her life outside of acting and addresses internet rumors.
Good thing Sweeney talked a lot about show business, as it justified today's post as the first Sunday entertainment feature of March. Whew! On the other hand, I'm a little worried for Sweeney for reasons that I mentioned in 'SNL' tackles E.

That's it for today's post. Remember, it's also World Wildlife Day, and stay tuned for a marching music Super Tuesday on Marching Music Day, when I feature the corps and bands from Super Tuesday states east of the Mississippi. That's now become a relationship between the GOP and Russia. Watch Chris Hayes: The GOP Would Like Putin’s Help Again In The 2024 Election, the second half of the interview I shared yesterday.*
He laughed ruefully and asked if the American people deserved the nominees. I told him that was another matter entirely.
I elaborated on that last month, writing "That's still true and is why we're almost certainly going to get a rematch between TFG and Joe Biden next year" — now this year.
As for the reversal of the Republican Party's position on Russia, I'm also going back to 2016, when I wrote in a comment on a friend's Facebook timeline that the Democrats will be the anti-Russian party for the next decade based on Russian assistance to Trump's campaign. I begin with Stephen Colbert's Stephen Declares SCOTUS Unconstitutional | Biden Is Fit For Duty | Don Jr. Courts The Amish Vote.

The Supreme Court is damaging its legacy and moral authority by delaying justice in Trump’s insurrection trial, President Biden passed his annual physical, and Donald Trump Jr. believes Amish voters could put his father back in office.
I've been expressing concerns over the legitimacy of the Supreme Court since at least the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the rush to fill her seat with Amy Coney Barrett, which I repeated in John Oliver examines the Supreme Court after 'Last Week Tonight' wins four Emmy Awards and CNBC examines 'How The Supreme Court May Threaten Democracy'. This could be another way the Surpreme Court threatens democracy, through "justice delayed is justice denied."

The case appeared on Stephen's show the night before in Chris Hayes On Breaking Supreme Court Decision To Hear Trump's Immunity Case.

Emmy Award-winner Chris Hayes breaks down today’s bombshell announcement that the Supreme Court will hear Donald Trump’s immunity case - seven weeks from now.
After hearing Chris Hayes with his hair on fire, I can see why Stephen came out with his hair on fire in his next monologue.

That was the day before yesterday. Last night's show opened by asking SCOTUS Decision Got You Down?

Is this legal?

To the question in the title, yes. As the parody ad says to the question in the description, probably not.

Follow over the jump for last night's takes on the topic from Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Daily Show.

Stephen mentioned Donald Trump's inability to pay his civil fraud judgment without selling assets, but Seth Meyers made it the first item of business in Trump Can't Afford to Pay $454 Million Fine; SCOTUS Will Hear Trump Immunity Case: A Closer Look. Seth made up for it by being more thorough and devoting the video's description to the subject.

Seth takes a closer look at the MAGA Supreme Court swooping in to rescue Trump from criminal prosecution for his January 6 coup attempt by announcing they would hear oral arguments over his ridiculous made-up claim to absolute immunity.
I enjoyed Seth including the clip of John Oliver's appearance on the show, although John took over the interview.

Returning to the topic, Seth and his writers made the right choice by mentioning John Oliver examining Clarence Thomas and making him an offer on 'Last Week Tonight'. It made for a good segue.

The Daily Show put the Supreme Court case first in Trump's SCOTUS Immunity Play & GOP Walks Back IVF Stance but saved it for last, as the description shows.

Michael Kosta dives into the uncertainty of IVF following an Alabama Supreme Court ruling and a proposed FDA plan to label “healthy foods.” Plus, Desi Lydic joins to discuss the Supreme Court’s decision to delay ruling on Trump’s immunity –– which is totally not politically motivated or anything.
Kosta's right; that's not how to pronounce "chimera." As for the rest of her objections, Senator Hyde-Smith is welcome to introduce her own bill or amendment on a bill already before the Senate to protect IVF.* I bet she doesn't.

As much as I'm interested in food, I should have known about the FDA's attempt to label healthy food. It's always a good day when I learn something new.

As for the Supreme Court case, it deserved a good Foxplaining by Desi Lydic. I should post one of those again.

*I mentioned IVF or at least frozen embryos in 'SNL' opens with a Trump victory party after the South Carolina Republican Primary. That episode of Saturday Night Live included an interview with a cast member playing one of those embryos. Maybe I'll include it in a post tomorrow or Sunday. It's that or more from the late-night talk-show hosts on Mitch McConnell retiring. Stay tuned to see which, if either, I pick.Pinku-Senseihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16247618351725715844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752611264465083204.post-895471075369724192024-02-29T00:00:00.011-05:002024-02-29T00:00:00.148-05:00Neil deGrasse Tyson explains leap years on StarTalk, twiceHappy Leap Year Day! Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice explain why we sometimes have that extra day in February.

Learn about the rotation and orbit of the Earth and how our orbit isn’t exactly 365 days. What is the difference between the Gregorian and Julian Calendar? We take a trip back to 1582 to find out why The Pope took out 10 days of October. Plus, find out why 2000 was such a special leap year.
Neil and Chuck laughing about a new year observance that changes its hour and sometimes even day every year reminds me that celebrations of Nowruz follow the Vernal Equinox around the clock and occasionally the calendar instead of being fixed on March 21, which is why I celebrate on International Day of Nowruz instead.

By the way, as Neil alluded to, this is not the first time he's explained leap years on StarTalk. I found The Leap Year as Explained by Neil deGrasse Tyson | StarTalk on National Geographic's YouTube channel from 2016.
This concludes February's blogging. Stay tuned for the first post of March, when I plan on celebrating a bunch of holidays, including this blog's 13th birthday. My blog will become a teenager!Pinku-Senseihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16247618351725715844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752611264465083204.post-39129956749147347752024-02-28T12:17:00.000-05:002024-02-28T12:29:10.427-05:00SciShow explains the connection between the age of the Earth and unleaded gasoline plus more about leadToday's topic for an evergreen entry is lead and today's source is SciShow. I begin with SciShow asking How Do We Know How Old the Earth Is?

In the wake of World War 2, Clair Patterson embarked on a scientific quest to find out how old the Earth really is. His hard work paid off, but it also revealed a modern danger.
I have already shown this to my geology students to explain how scientists know how old the Earth is using radiometric dating of meteorites and I might show it to my environmental science students to illustrate how prevalent lead was and still is in our environment and the long-running effort to remove lead from gasoline, at least in the U.S. If I do, it would serve as an example of three of Commoner's Laws: Everything is connected to everything else, there is no away, and there is no free lunch. Nature knows best? Whatever that would be, it doesn't involve lead!

SciShow uploaded the above video on January 30th. The channel continued examining lead yesterday when it posted Why Does Everything Decay Into Lead.

If you look at a copy of the periodic table, you might notice that basically every element after lead is labelled as radioactive. And the vast majority of those elements wind up decaying into some version of lead eventually. But why is lead so special?
I may have heard of magic numbers and nuclear shells before, but I don't recall it sticking. If it doesn't stick, have I really learned anything? If not and it sticks this time, then I have learned something new. It's always a good day when I learn something new. I hope my readers agree.

These weren't SciShow's first videos about lead. A good candidate for that would be Lead: The Original Artificial Sweetener from 2015.

Lead is really useful when you add it to things like paint and gasoline. Problem is, it’s also poisonous.

Hosted by: Hank Green
I think I'm more likely to show this to my environmental science students. It's shorter and more focused on lead's hazards. Besides, Hank Green is an entertaining host. Newer is not always better!

That's it for today's science lesson. Stay tuned for Leap Year Day!Pinku-Senseihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16247618351725715844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752611264465083204.post-48758249842925300432024-02-27T11:20:00.000-05:002024-02-27T11:20:55.532-05:00Marching music for the Michigan Primary — Legends, U of M, MSU, Rockford, and DeWittI announced today's post yesterday.
I've already decided to post this year's version of Marching music for the Michigan, Washington, Mississippi, and Democrats Abroad primaries focusing on my adopted home state of Michigan, which has the date all to itself, thanks to Democrats rearranging the dates of their primaries and caucuses to make them more representative. I guess that counts as reality through my idiosyncratic lens. Now off to select the videos to watch and listen to while waiting for the results!
Since I emphasize competitive drum corps in this series, I begin with what was Michigan's only competitive drum corps, Legends | #dci2022 | May Your Light Shine Forever from Drum Corps International (DCI).

Kalamazoo, Michigan's Legends perform a segment from the corps' #DCI2022 production, "May Your Light Shine Forever," during the 2022 DCI World Championships hosted August 12-14 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
That's the official upload. Drum Corps Library uploaded the complete show, which pays tribute to three adults who worked with the corps and were lost during the pandemic.

As the title and description of the DCI video explaining the show say, "'Three special people'...Legends' emotional 2022 production, 'May Your Light Shine Forever,' honors three individuals from the Legends community who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic." May the same be said about Legends, who did not field a corps last year and apparently won't field a corps this year, as they are not included among the List of Drum Corps International member corps. Sigh. Legends are already missed.

I like transitions and connections and I have one for this post from DCI, From Boston to "The Big House:" Crusaders Trumpet Excels as Michigan Drum Major.
I'll get to the states west of the Mississippi on Super Tuesday proper.

In fairness, I'm also sharing Spartan Marching Band: Halftime | 10.21.2023 - MSU vs. Michigan.
This may be the first rock show I'm featuring today, but it won't be the last. Keep reading, watching, and listening to the end to see that. Until then, I'm going back ten years for Michigan State University Spartan Marching Band - 2014 Pasadena Rose Parade from Luis at Music213.
I'm continuing with Luis of Music213's videos by sharing Rockford High School Marching Band - 2023 Pasadena Bandfest.
That reminds me of my observation I first wrote in Marching music for the Nebraska Primary.
Seeing this pair of videos reminds me of my experience growing up in southern California that it could be cold, rainy, and windy the week before the Rose Parade, but as soon as New Year's Day dawns, the skies will clear and the sun will shine. It's as if the Southland knows the cameras will be on it and it responds with "it's showtime!" It almost never fails.
And it worked like a charm. An analogous melt of water from the Greenland icecap, which is beginning to happen, would do much the same thing, slowing ocean circulation and cooling Europe. Something similar has been going on with the Star Trek shows, as the hair and makeup artists are nominating it, including two Emmy nominations for Star Trek: Picard last year and five nominations for Star Trek: Picard in 2020 including two for makeup, one for hairstyling, and two for sound. In that vein, I'm sharing PBS Terra's How An Ancient Ocean Shaped US History.

From ancient seas to fertile soils, evolutionary biologist Shane Campbell-Staton explores the remarkable journey that transformed the Cretaceous coastline into the fertile “Black Belt” region of the American South. He joins oceanographer Craig McClain, professor Sven Beckert, and geneticist Steven Micheletti to learn how millions of years of deposits shaped the events of Black American history.
A lesson I teach my geology students is how the underlying rocks and sediments influence how humans use the landscape. The example I use involves stranded shorelines when lake levels were higher during the terminal Pleistocene here in metro Detroit. People like to site cemeteries and parks on them, particularly the shoreline of Lake Whittlesey, map below.

My explanation is that these ancient beaches are elevated benches of sand that are relatively easy to excavate, wide enough for cemeteries, and provide good views. The first two are practical considerations, while I think the last is cultural. We may fancy that the dead would like a vista, but it's really for the living.

I drive this lesson home the Saturday before Halloween, when I lead a field trip past all these cemeteries, calling it a Halloween Graveyard Tour, that ends at a local cider mill. Students enjoy it, as long as they don't get lost, which does happen. I plan on adding addresses and GPS coordinates to the landmarks for future trips so my students stay on course. That's not exactly what I had in mind by incorporating technology into my teaching, but welcome to meeting my students where they are in third decade of the 21st Century.

All of that pales in comparison with the journey through time and space that Shane Campbell-Staton took his viewers through. It shows how connected history, economy, culture, and politics are to the Earth on a scale that dwarfs my example from the end of the Pleistocene to today. It also reminds me of my favorite William Faulkner quote, “The past is never dead. It's not even past.” Faulkner was a Southerner, so he was in a position to know, but even he had no idea how the deep past from the time of the dinosaurs still hasn't died and is still with us.
