Colbert and Meyers take closer looks at ABC suspending Kimmel

I empathized with Jimmy Kimmel at the end of 'You're Not Alone' and 'Now What?' Closer looks at Trump's re-election from Colbert, Meyers, 'The Daily Show,' and Kimmel.
I think Jimmy is right to be worried. I am, too...Now I'm wondering if people will protect Jimmy, Stephen, Seth, and the rest of the late-night talk show hosts. If so, it would be another example of the surest way to get Americans to act is to mess with their entertainment. As I first wrote in 2011, "America is quite clear about its screwed up priorities."
It's happening. First, CBS canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Now, Disney and ABC took Kimmel off the air "indefinitely" in response to pressure from the FCC and two companies that own many of their affiliates, Nexstar and Sinclair. At least Stephen is still on the air, so I begin with his monologue, We Are All Jimmy Kimmel | The Easy Way Or The Hard Way | Trump Urges NBC To Cancel Fallon And Mey[ers].

ABC yanked “Jimmy Kimmel Live” off the air following a threat from FCC chair Brendan Carr, and President Trump celebrated his administration’s success in blackmailing media companies in order to silence his critics.
I was wondering when Donald "Hoover Cleveland" Trump would mention Seth Meyers in one of his (un)truths. I'll get to Seth in a bit, along with Stephen's Emmy Award. In the meantime, Stephen returned with The Word: Shhhhhh!

Daddy’s home! Stephen Colbert has appointed Stephen Colbert, former host of “The Colbert Report,” as ombudsman to ensure that the final season of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” remains free from liberal bias.
HAHAHAHA!

Stephen's show continued with If We Do Not Have The Ability To Criticize Our Leaders, We Are No Longer The U.S.A. - Jake Tapper.

Best-selling author and CNN Chief White House Correspondent Jake Tapper joins Stephen to discuss the Trump administration’s role in Disney’s decision to take “Jimmy Kimmel Live” off the air. Stick around for more with Jake Tapper and check out his book, “Race Against Terror,” available October 7th.
Tapper is right. Paramount and CBS gave Hoover Cleveland's maladministration plausible deniability when they canceled Stephen's show. FCC chair Brendan Carr's prompting and Hoover Cleveland's approval made the sequence of events and ultimate responsibility much clearer with Kimmel's show being suspended. I think that's why the reaction is stronger for Kimmel than for Colbert.

As Stephen mocked in his monologue, Hoover Cleveland is exploiting media consolidation to achieve his goal of silencing his critics. Jake Tapper On The Dangers Of Corporate Consolidation Among Media Companies explored that topic.

CNN Chief White House Correspondent and host of “The Lead with Jake Tapper” examines the motives of media corporations who seek the favor of President Trump and the chilling effect of his move to silence critics.
While the FCC has no control over cable and streaming, so it can't threaten Tapper's employer, CNN, media consolidation in the form of the NBC and rumored Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger can still affect them and him.

It wouldn't be a closer look without Seth Meyers, so I'm sharing Trump Returns from U.K. Visit and the White House Cracks Down on Free Speech: A Closer Look.

Seth takes a closer look at Trump's lavish state visit to the U.K. and his administration's attempts to silence critics and crack down on free speech.
My only disappointment was Seth not reacting to Hoover Cleveland finally mentioning him as a target. Maybe he and his writers decided that would just be encouraging Hoover Cleveland. That, or NBC's lawyers told him not to.

Follow over the jump for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert's Emmy Awards.

Time to revisit what I wrote in Colbert, Lydic, and Meyers take closer looks at the EPA and Epstein and Kimmel goes down the rabbit hole on 'windmills' as updated in 'Jeopardy!' and Jimmy Kimmel win Game Show categories at the Emmy Awards.
Gold Derby agrees on the most likely winner, but flips the odds of the other two. 83.3% of experts, 33.3% of editors, and 68.6% of users predict The Daily Show will repeat. On the other hand, 66.6% of editors, 16.7% of experts, and 27.6% of users expect The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to upset. I suspect the editors believe CBS canceling The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will drive a sympathy vote. They might just be right. Only 3.8% of users have cast long shot votes for Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Gold Derby thinks Kimmel's campaign may have helped drive the sympathy vote, as every editor, 94.1% of experts, and 94.8% of users are now voting for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Just 5.9% of experts and 4.5% of users still think The Daily Show will repeat. Meanwhile, 0.7% of users are still supporting Jimmy Kimmel Live! Give it up. Jimmy's already won his Emmy for the year.
Gold Derby's updated prediction came true. Watch Stephen Colbert accept the Emmy for Talk Series: 77th Emmy Awards.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert accepts the Emmy for Talk Series at the 77th Emmy Awards.
Listen to those ovations! Not only do the Television Academy members love Stephen, they proved their love by voting for him. Speaking of, Stephen showed his love for the ideals of America. Great speech!

Next, a category I first covered in John Oliver examines 'Gang Databases' plus 'Last Week Tonight's six Emmy nominations.
Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series
  • The Daily Show: "Jon Stewart Delivers a Mug-Smashing Take on Musk's DOGE" – David Paul Meyer (Comedy Central)
  • Jimmy Kimmel Live!: "Anthony Mackie, Lizzy Caplan, and Musical Guest Bartees Strange" – Andy Fisher (ABC)
  • Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: "India Elections" – Paul Pennolino (HBO)
  • The Late Show with Stephen Colbert: "David Oyelowo, Finn Wolfhard, Special Appearance by Alan Cumming, Performance by Ok Go" – Jim Hoskinson (CBS)
This is the last award today predicted by Gold Derby, where the experts and editors disagree, with all the experts expecting The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to win, while all the editors anticipate Last Week Tonight with John Oliver will earn a third Emmy in this category. Electorates matter in miniature! The users break the deadlock with 80.7% aligned with the experts and 11.1% allied with the editors. The Daily Show is in third with 5.9% of users supporting it, and 2.2% of users choosing Jimmy Kimmel Live! I'll look at this category again on Thursday before I decide whether to go with the editors or experts.
The experts haven't moved, but the editors have, as 33.3% now pick The Daily Show, leaving 66.7% sticking with Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. I'll take the experts' confidence, however misplaced, and predict The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
The experts did not misplace their confidence. In fact, by the time the award was presented, every editor and 85.7% of users had joined the experts in predicting Jim Hoskinson would win. He did. Stephen recognized his director in After 20 Years Directing Stephen Colbert, Emmy-Winner Jim Hoskinson Is Retiring.

“The Late Show” and “The Colbert Report” director Jim Hoskinson sits down with Stephen Colbert to look back at two decades of joyful collaboration, as Jim hands the reins over to Yvonne De Mare, who will direct The Late Show’s final season. Congratulations Jim, we’ll miss you!
Same here. Congratulations to Colbert, Hoskinson, and crew on their Emmy wins!

That's a wrap for today, but I'm not done with the reactions to Kimmel being "canceled." Stay tuned for The Daily Show's response and its Emmy Awards for the Sunday entertainment entry tomorrow.
