'The Penguin' has already won 8 Emmys, but could lose to 'Adolescence'

I decided to get a jump on the Primetime Emmy Awards for today's Sunday entertainment feature by examining the nominees for limited series as well as the winners for limited series at last night's half of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. I begin with the Television Academy announcing 77th Emmy Nominations: Limited or Anthology Series.

The nominees for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series are Adolescence, Black Mirror, Dying For Sex, Monsters The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, The Penguin.
The Penguin led nominations with 24, 17 at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, eight of which it won last night, and seven at next Sunday's ceremony. Adolescence follows with 13, eight at the Creative Arts Emmys, winning two of them. Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story had eleven, seven at the Creative Arts Emmy, winning one of them. Black Mirror had ten, seven at the Creative Arts Emmys, and Dying for Sex had nine, three at the Creative Arts Emmys. Neither Black Mirror nor Dying for Sex won any Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

The prognosticators at Gold Derby flip the top two, as Adolescence leads as the choice of every editor and expert along with 93.3% of users. Gold Derby's odds-makers think the Television Academy will give The Penguin the bird instead of the Emmy, as 5.8% are betting on the Batman villain. Dying for Sex and Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story have miniscule support at 0.4% each and Black Mirror has only 0.2% of users making long-shot picks. Long-shots occasionally win — one did last night — but not in this case.

Next, 77th Emmy Nominations: Lead Actress In A Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

The nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie are Cate Blanchett, Meghann Fahy, Rashida Jones, Cristin Milioti, Michelle Williams.
There is less consensus in this category, as Cristin Milioti leads as the choice of 80.0% of editors, 69.2% of experts, and 79.0% of users while 2019 Emmy winner Michelle Williams earned the rest of the professional votes, 20.0% of editors and 30.8% of experts, along with 17.6% of users. We have a contest! Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett has the votes of 2.2% of users, followed by Rashida Jones with 1.1% and Meghann Fahy at 0.2%. Milioti should be pleased to be doing this well against this field!

77th Emmy Nominations: Lead Actor In A Limited or Anthology Series or Movie is the final video from the Television Academy today.

The nominees for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie are Colin Farrell, Stephen Graham, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brian Tyree Henry, Cooper Koch.
There is more consensus at Gold Derby, but they still see this as a contest, with every editor, 71.4% of experts, and 81.1% of users picking Colin Farrell, while 28.6% of experts and 17.2% of users are choosing Stephen Graham. The rest of the nominees are well behind with Cooper Koch having the support of 0.9% of users while Jake Gyllenhaal and Brian Tyree Henry are tied at 0.4%.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie
  • Erin Doherty – Adolescence as Briony Ariston (Netflix)
  • Ruth Negga – Presumed Innocent as Barbara Sabich (Apple TV+)
  • Deirdre O'Connell – The Penguin as Francis Cobb (HBO)
  • Chloë Sevigny – Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story as Kitty Menendez (Netflix)
  • Jenny Slate – Dying for Sex as Nikki Boyer (FX)
  • Christine Tremarco – Adolescence as Manda Miller (Netflix)
Every editor and expert expects Erin Doherty to win along with 84.9% of Gold Derby users. The rest of the nominees are below 10% with Jenny Slate having 9.9% user support, followed by Deirdre O'Connell with 3.8%, Ruth Negga with 0.7% and Christine Tremarco and Chloe Sevigny tied at 0.4%.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie
  • Javier Bardem – Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story as José Menendez (Netflix)
  • Bill Camp – Presumed Innocent as Raymond Horgan (Apple TV+)
  • Owen Cooper – Adolescence as Jamie Miller (Netflix)
  • Rob Delaney – Dying for Sex as Neighbor Guy (FX)
  • Peter Sarsgaard – Presumed Innocent as Tommy Motto (Apple TV+)
  • Ashley Walters – Adolescence as DI Luke Bascombe (Netflix)
There is even more overwhelming support for Owen Cooper, who is the choice of every editor and expert along with 97.0% of users. Wow! The rest of the field has less than 2% user support with Javier Bardem at 1.8%, Ashley Walters at 0.6%, Bill Camp at 0.4%, Peter Sarsgaard at 0.2.%, and Rob Delaney with 0.0%.

Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie
  • Adolescence – Philip Barantini (Netflix)
  • Dying for Sex: "It's Not That Serious" – Shannon Murphy (FX)
  • The Penguin: "Cent'Anni" – Helen Shaver (HBO)
  • The Penguin: "A Great or Little Thing" – Jennifer Getzinger (HBO)
  • Sirens: "Exile" – Nicole Kassell (Netflix)
  • Zero Day – Lesli Linka Glatter (Netflix)
Gold Derby's consensus around this category is almost as strong with every editor and expert along with 94.7% of users anticipating Adolescence as the winner. The users picked both nominated episodes of The Penguin next, with 4.6% supporting Helen Shaver for "Cent'Anni" and 0.6% behind Jennifer Getzinger for "A Great or Little Thing." Nicole Kassell has captured 0.2% of users for Sirens, while there is no user support for either Dying for Sex or Zero Day. On the one hand, look at all the women nominated. On the other, none of them are likely to win. Darn.

Gold Derby's consensus is nearly as consolidated for writing as for directing, with every editor and expert plus 94.2% of users anticipating Adolescence as the awardee. The rest of the nominees have less than 5% each with 4.2% picking The Penguin, 0.6% behind Black Mirror and Dying for Sex, and 0.4% supporting Say Nothing.

Follow over the jump for last night's limited series winners at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Gold Derby's predictions for title design and music at the Emmy Awards included The Penguin winning Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score) and I expressed my preference for The Penguin to win Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup in 'Saturday Night Live' earned seven Emmy nominations for its 50th season, so congratulations to the makeup team for The Penguin, which also won Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (Non-Prosthetic). I thought Black Mirror might win Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special , but I'm neither surprised nor upset that The Penguin won instead. Congratulations to the crew of The Penguin on all eight of its Emmys and good luck on the two Emmys Gold Derby expects it to win next week.

As I wrote above, Adolescence won two Emmys last night for Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Gold Derby's predictions for casting at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards included it winning the first award, so congratulations to the casting directors for winning and Gold Derby for predicting the win. Also, good luck on the five categories Gold Derby expects it to win.

The last limited series to win an Emmy last night was Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which earned the award for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Congratulations!

Since TV movies compete against limited series in a lot of categories, I'm acknowledging Rebel Ridge's win for Outstanding Television Movie, which Gold Derby called, so congratulations to the cast and crew of the movie for winning and Gold Derby predicting it.

I'm closing out with The Penguin Soundtrack | Scherzo for a Flightless Bird (The Penguin Theme) - Mick Giacchino.

Again, more music worthy of a Batman villain!

That's a wrap for today. Stay tuned to see if I continue my Emmys coverage with comedy winners and nominees tomorrow.
