'Adolescence' sweeps its categories at the Emmy Awards with one win for 'The Penguin'

The prognosticators at Gold Derby flip the top two, as Adolescence leads as the choice of every editor and expert along with 93.3% of users. Gold Derby's odds-makers think the Television Academy will give The Penguin the bird instead of the Emmy, as 5.8% are betting on the Batman villain. Dying for Sex and Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story have miniscule support at 0.4% each and Black Mirror has only 0.2% of users making long-shot picks. Long-shots occasionally win — one did last night — but not in this case.

Adolescence had no nominees in the next category, so an actress from another show won.
There is less consensus in this category, as Cristin Milioti leads as the choice of 80.0% of editors, 69.2% of experts, and 79.0% of users while 2019 Emmy winner Michelle Williams earned the rest of the professional votes, 20.0% of editors and 30.8% of experts, along with 17.6% of users. We have a contest! Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett has the votes of 2.2% of users, followed by Rashida Jones with 1.1% and Meghann Fahy at 0.2%. Milioti should be pleased to be doing this well against this field!

I'm glad to see her so moved and excited by her award. I'm also glad one speculative fiction nominee won, even if this interpretation of Batman and his rogues gallery is fairly realistic.

The next winner was a bit of a surprise.
There is more consensus at Gold Derby, but they still see this as a contest, with every editor, 71.4% of experts, and 81.1% of users picking Colin Farrell, while 28.6% of experts and 17.2% of users are choosing Stephen Graham. The rest of the nominees are well behind with Cooper Koch having the support of 0.9% of users while Jake Gyllenhaal and Brian Tyree Henry are tied at 0.4%.
Farrell didn't win. Instead Graham walked off with the Emmy for Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie: 77th Emmy Awards.

The announcer mentioned that this was his second Emmy and he was nominated for a third. He won that, too, which is why the preview image shows him holding three statuettes.

The next award went as Gold Derby predicted.
Every editor and expert expects Erin Doherty to win along with 84.9% of Gold Derby users. The rest of the nominees are below 10% with Jenny Slate having 9.9% user support, followed by Deirdre O'Connell with 3.8%, Ruth Negga with 0.7% and Christine Tremarco and Chloe Sevigny tied at 0.4%.

The rest of the field has less than 2% user support with Javier Bardem at 1.8%, Ashley Walters at 0.6%, Bill Camp at 0.4%, Peter Sarsgaard at 0.2.%, and Rob Delaney with 0.0%.

The users picked both nominated episodes of The Penguin next, with 4.6% supporting Helen Shaver for "Cent'Anni" and 0.6% behind Jennifer Getzinger for "A Great or Little Thing." Nicole Kassell has captured 0.2% of users for Sirens, while there is no user support for either Dying for Sex or Zero Day. On the one hand, look at all the women nominated. On the other, none of them are likely to win. Darn.

The rest of the nominees have less than 5% each with 4.2% picking The Penguin, 0.6% behind Black Mirror and Dying for Sex, and 0.4% supporting Say Nothing.

That bit was even dumber the second time around, although it did make the point about how important writers are in television. As for Graham and Thorne, I'm going to show my age by saying they look like Mutt and Jeff.

The Penguin had such a headstart on awards that it ended up with nine, one more than Adolescence. Congratulations! Only The Studio beat it with a total of 13, including four major awards, the second most last night. I plan on examining The Studio, Hacks, and Somebody Somewhere on Wednesday. Stay tuned.
