'VICE News Tonight' leads nominations for Outstanding Business, Consumer or Economic Coverage at the News & Doc Emmy Awards on the Autumnal Equinox

Happy Autumnal Equinox! As I wrote yesterday, I am finishing the nominations for Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller at the 2023 News & Doc Emmy Awards today. That written, the final nominination is merely making a cameo, as "VICE News Tonight has three nominees in Outstanding Business, Consumer or Economic Coverage, one of which I think will win, so I'm planning on the next installment of the series featuring them, not Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller." Without any further ado, here are the nominees for that category.
Outstanding Business, Consumer or Economic Coverage
Africa+
Black Snow: Nigeria’s Oil Catastrophe Bloomberg
Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller
Stolen Cars National Geographic
VICE News Tonight
The Price of Purity: Inside the Wellness Industry’s Controversial Supply Chains Vice
VICE News Tonight
VICE News Investigates: Mafia Land Vice
VICE News Tonight
Undercover in Guyana Vice
VICE News Tonight's three nominees all have nominations in other categories so long as I add the nominations for "Mafia Land" to "VICE News Investigates: Mafia Land"itself. Once I do this, "VICE News Investigates: Mafia Land"/"Mafia Land" has three nominations, including Outstanding Video Journalism and Outstanding Graphic Design and Art Direction: News, while both "The Price of Purity: Inside the Wellness Industry’s Controversial Supply Chains" and "Undercover in Guyana" have two each. "The Price of Purity: Inside the Wellness Industry’s Controversial Supply Chains" is competing with "Mafia Land" for Outstanding Video Journalism, while "Undercover in Guyana" is contending against Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller's "White Supremacy" and five other nominees for Outstanding Research: News. This is the only nomination for both Africa+ and Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller's "Stolen Cars." Based on the number of nominations, I expect "Mafia Land" to be the favorite so long as vote splitting with the other two VICE News Tonight nominees doesn't interfere.

Follow over the jump for the rest of the nominations for these episodes of VICE News Tonight.

First, the category in which "The Price of Purity: Inside the Wellness Industry’s Controversial Supply Chains" and "Mafia Land" are competing along with two other episodes of VICE News Tonight for a total of four out of a field of five.
Outstanding Video Journalism
60 Minutes
Return to Gorongosa CBS
VICE News Tonight
Battle for Bakhmut Vice
VICE News Tonight
Inside an Armed Bank Raid in Lebanon Vice
VICE News Tonight
Mafia Land Vice
VICE News Tonight
The Price of Purity: Inside the Wellness Industry’s Controversial Supply Chains Vice
This is a category I could have covered in 'VICE News Tonight' vs. '60 Minutes' for Outstanding Recorded News Program at the News & Doc Emmy Awards because those are the only programs nominated for it. As I mentioned above, "Mafia Land" has three total nominations and "The Price of Purity: Inside the Wellness Industry’s Controversial Supply Chains" has two. So does "Inside an Armed Bank Raid in Lebanon," which also earned a nomination for Outstanding Edited Breaking News Coverage. "Battle for Bakhmut" and 60 Minutes' Return to Gorongosa have only this one. Based on total nominations, I give the nod to "Mafia Land," but this is a category where vote splitting is a real risk, which opens up the opportunity to recycle this passage from the first post of this month.
While VICE News Tonight has far and away the most nominations, with 22 reports nominated in 16 categories, compared to ten segments nominated in eight categories for 60 Minutes, I still think that 60 Minutes remains the favorite to win. In addition to my thinking and feeling that 60 Minutes is the better show, despite the greater number of nominated segments from VICE News Tonight, the former has earned a reputation for excellence over multiple decades spanning two centuries, while VICE is a newcomer. I think that counts for something among the journalists, documentarians, and others who belong the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and will be voting on these awards. Remember, electorates matter.
That written, VICE News Tonight split this award last year, so my suspicion might not become reality. This is one case where I'd be happy to be wrong.

Now the other category in which "Mafia Land" earned a nomination.
Outstanding Graphic Design and Art Direction: News
AMHQ
Resilience and Adaptation 40 Years into the Future The Weather Channel
As Equals
The Dangers of Mercury in Skin Whitening Products Explained CNN
CNN Digital
From HRH to Consort, CNN Explains how British Royal Titles Work CNN
A Fact-Checked Debate About Legal Weed Vox
VICE News Tonight
Mafia Land Vice
VICE News Tonight
Queer Kabul Vice
Winter Sports Week Vox
CNN Digital won this award last year, so I'm considering "From HRH to Consort, CNN Explains how British Royal Titles Work" the nominal favorite in the absence of actually watching the video. That's in spite of "Mafia Land" having more total nominations. That written, I really enjoy the graphics in Vox's videos and The Weather Channel has earned awards for its animation and graphics, despite Last Week Tonight with John Oliver thinking "The Weather Channel's Graphics Department Is Insane." I'm going to recycle my reaction to that satirical sentiment.
I'm pretty sure that The Weather Channel will not "take it down a notch" as long as their use of graphics is winning awards. As I first wrote in Did Hurricane Irene live up to the hype? The numbers say yes eight years ago, "expect more dramatic coverage from The Weather Channel in the future, not less." This award says I was right.
I'm not counting The Weather Channel out on this award, its only nomination.

I conclude with the final category for today, recycled from 'Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller' leads nominees for Outstanding Crime and Justice Coverage at the 2023 News & Doc Emmy Awards.
Outstanding Research: News
CNN Newsroom
The Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh CNN
FRONTLINE Afghanistan Undercover PBS
FRONTLINE, The Associated Press, SITU Research Crime Scene: Bucha PBS
The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer Horror at Kabul's Abbey Gate CNN
The Taliban Promised Them Amnesty. Then They Executed Them The New York Times
Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller White Supremacy National Geographic
VICE News Tonight Undercover in Guyana Vice
The nominees with nominations in other categories are Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller's White Supremacy for Outstanding Crime and Justice Coverage and Outstanding Editing: News, FRONTLINE's Afghanistan Undercover and Crime Scene: Bucha for Outstanding Investigative News Coverage: Long Form, The New York Times's The Taliban Promised Them Amnesty. Then They Executed Them for Outstanding News Discussion & Analysis: Editorial and Opinion, and VICE News Tonight's Undercover in Guyana for Outstanding Business, Consumer or Economic Coverage. Based on the total number of nominations, I'm picking Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller's White Supremacy to win.
I still am, but I think that VICE News Tonight's Undercover in Guyana could give it a run for its money.
I have nothing to add to my analysis, so I'm stopping here. Stay tuned for more News & Doc Emmy Awards coverage tomorrow. I think I'll shift to Outstanding Arts, Culture or Entertainment Coverage tomorrow to make it a proper Sunday entertainment feature. In the meantime, happy Autumnal Equinox!
