'The Bear' leads comedy winners and nominees at the Emmy Awards

I'm continuing my Emmy Awards coverage with the comedy series winners at the 76th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and the comedy series nominees at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. Unlike drama series, where Shogun completely dominated its competition, its co-leader at the Gold Derby TV Awards, The Bear led comedies in awards, but didn't sweep them, winning seven. Only Murders in the Building won three Creative Arts Emmys, four if one counts its short-form spinoff, How I Met Your Father won two, and Palm Royale and The Gentlemen each won one. To top it off, Only Murders in the Building beat both Shogun and The Bear for two of its awards and Palm Royale beat Shogun for its Emmy Award. Don't underestimate the quality of streaming comedies!

Gold Derby predicted The Bear's guest acting wins at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, where I wrote "Between Bernthal and Curtis, it could be a mini-sweep of comedy guest performances for The Bear." That's what happened.

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
  • Jon Bernthal – The Bear: "Fishes" as Michael Berzatto (FX)
  • Matthew Broderick – Only Murders in the Building: "CoBro" as Matthew Broderick (Hulu)
  • Ryan Gosling – Saturday Night Live: "Host: Ryan Gosling" as host (NBC)
  • Christopher Lloyd – Hacks: "The Deborah Vance Christmas Spectacular" as Larry Arbuckle (Max)
  • Bob Odenkirk – The Bear: "Fishes" as Uncle Lee (FX)
  • Will Poulter – The Bear: "Honeydew" as Luca (FX)
Gold Derby's editors and top 24 users have divided opinions about the likely winner. The editors are split five to five between Jon Bernthal and Christopher Lloyd with one editor picking Ryan Gosling as a dark horse. The experts are even more evenly divided among the top three nominees with four backing Bernthal and three going for Gosling, leaving two for Lloyd. On the other hand, the top 24 users display more consolidation with 18 behind Bernthal, three voting for Gosling, only two for Lloyd, and one brave user making a long shot bet on Bob Odenkirk.
Between my writing the above and showtime, one of the editors switched from Lloyd to Gosling, giving Bernthal a plurality. That same editor is almost certainly also an expert, as one of the experts also switched from Lloyd to Gosling, tying Bernthal and Gosling at four. The users called it, the editors backed into a win, and the experts are demonstrating why I like the editors better. Congrats to the users and editors, as well as Bernthal!

Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series
  • Olivia Colman – The Bear: "Forks" as Chef Terry (FX)
  • Jamie Lee Curtis – The Bear: "Fishes" as Donna Berzatto (FX)
  • Kaitlin Olson – Hacks: "The Roast of Deborah Vance" as DJ Vance (Max)
  • Da'Vine Joy Randolph – Only Murders in the Building: "Sitzprobe" as Donna Williams (Hulu)
  • Maya Rudolph – Saturday Night Live: "Host: Maya Rudolph" as host (NBC)
  • Kristen Wiig – Saturday Night Live: "Host: Kristen Wiig" as host (NBC)
The editors, experts, and top 24 users have unanimously chosen Jamie Lee Curtis. After seeing how she won an Oscar for Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, I think the prognosticators at Gold Derby have been convinced of Hollywood's love for Curtis so they agree she'll win an Emmy to go with her Oscar. To reiterate, electorates matter.
And the experts, broadly speaking, were right. I'm celebrating by sharing Gold Derby's Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Comedy Guest Actress, 'The Bear') 2024 Emmys press room interview.

Jamie Lee Curtis won Best Comedy Guest Actress for "The Bear" at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys.
Four things from this interview stuck out to me. First, the questions about winning an Oscar and an Emmy in consecutive years and what that meas for an EGOT, which occured to me as well. Curtis may not be able to sing, but she can certainly do spoken word and narration, which could earn her a Grammy, so she can still get an EGO. I'm surprised she's never been on stage, but I'm not surprised she doesn't want to stay up late. She is less than a year older than me, and I can relate. Second, her feminism doesn't surprise me, either, and good for her. Third, a sequel to Freaky Friday! The original earned several Saturn Awards nominations, so I'm looking forward to voting on the sequel next year. Finally, Curtis knows how to make an exit! Also, congratulations!

The Bear also won Emmys for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour), Outstanding Picture Editing for a Single-Camera Comedy Series, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation, and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation. Gold Derby has interviews of nearly all the winners from the first season, but I could only find one definitely from this season, 'The Bear' editor Joanna Naugle: 'I loved being able to push the limits of how stressed we could be'.

'The Bear' editor Joanna Naugle: 'I loved being able to push the limits of how stressed we could be.' The Emmy winner discusses character-specific styles, editing for audio clarity and more. Gold Derby editor Joyce Eng hosts this webchat as part of the 'Meet the Experts' panel for editors.
This was fascinating discussion about how editing enhances the story and character development. Congratulations to Naugle on her second Emmy for editing The Bear and congratulations to the rest of the winners who worked on the series!

Follow over the jump for the rest of the comedy series winners and odds for the nominees at tomorrow night's ceremony.

The next most awarded comedy series is Only Murders in the Building, which won Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series, Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Program (Half-Hour), Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score), and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. I'm recognizing two of the winners today, beginning with Patrick Howe ('Only Murders in the Building' production designer) on fun of 'Death Rattle Dazzle'.

Patrick Howe ('Only Murders in the Building' production designer) describes how his theatre and TV backgrounds went 'hand-in-hand' for 'Death Rattle Dazzle.' The Emmy nominee designed the theatrical sets for the Broadway musical in the third season of the Hulu comedy series. Gold Derby contributor David Buchanan hosts this interview as part of our "Meet the Experts" Emmy nominees panel for production designers.
Taking the third season of Only Murders in the Building out of the building and into the theater really helped Patrick Howe and his fellow production designers win this award. So did the decor of the penthouse apartment for Paul "CoBro" Rudd. Congratulations! Now, let's see if transporting the characters to Hollywood for season four does the same next year.

Next, a category called in Gold Derby's predictions for TV movie and music at the Emmy Awards.

Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics
  • Girls5eva: "New York" - "The Medium Time" by Sara Bareilles (Netflix)
  • Only Murders in the Building: "Sitzprobe" - "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?" by Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Marc Shaiman, and Scott Wittman (Hulu)
  • Saturday Night Live: "Host: Maya Rudolph" - "Maya Rudolph Mother's Day Monologue" by Eli Brueggemann, Maya Rudolph, Auguste White, Mike DiCenzo, and Jake Nordwind (NBC)
  • The Tattooist of Auschwitz: "Episode 6" - "Love Will Survive" by Kara Talve, Hans Zimmer, Walter Afanasieff, and Charlie Midnight (Peacock)
  • True Detective: Night Country: "Part 5" - "No Use" by John Hawkes (HBO)
There is more agreement for this award, as ten editors, all ten experts, and 16 users made Only Murders in the Building their choice. One editor and two users are going for Girls5eva, while two users singled out Saturday Night Live and one lone user took The Tattooist of Auschwitz as their winner.
They got it right, and so did the voters. When my wife and I watched Steve Martin sing the winning song, I was sure it would be nominated for this award. I'm glad to see it was and then won. In case my readers haven't seen and heard it, I'm sharing Only Murders in the Building | "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It" Music Video | Hulu.

That was even better the second time around!

I'm celebrating its win by sharing Gold Derby's 'Only Murders in the Building' songwriters (Best Music and Lyrics) 2024 Emmys press room interview.

Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman won Best Music and Lyrics for their song "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” from "Only Murders in the Building." This makes Pasek and Paul the 20th and 21st EGOT winners.
Both questions were about achieving the EGOT, but I'm O.K. with that. Congratulations!

There is one more musical winner, but I'm saving him for the diversity among Emmy Awards winners entry I postponed to write James Earl Jones passes at 93, so I'm moving on to another musical award won by a comedy series.

Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music
  • Feud: Capote vs. The Swans - Thomas Newman (FX)
  • Lessons in Chemistry - Carlos Rafael Rivera (Apple TV+)
  • Masters of the Air - Blake Neely (Apple TV+)
  • Palm Royale - Jeff Toyne (Apple TV+)
  • Shogun - Atticus Ross, Leopold Ross, and Nick Chuba (FX)
Gold Derby displays more diversity of opinion in this category, as eight editors, eight experts, and 18 users voted for Shogun. Two editors, two experts, and four users love Lessons in Chemistry enough to think it will win, while one editor has Feud: Capote vs. The Swans as their choices and one user picked Palm Royale. Sorry, nothing for Masters of the Air.
Again, congratulations to the prognosticators at Gold Derby. The editors, experts, and all but one top user blew this one, as they expected a Shogun victory as part of a sweep. This and the music Emmy won by Only Murders in the Building I'm showcasing next week are the only categories Shogun was nominated for that it didn't win. I'm celebrating by embedding Palm Royale — Opening Title Sequence | Apple TV+.

A show this opulent deserves an equally elegant intro sequence. Palm Royale is now streaming on Apple TV+...

Palm Royale is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig) as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, Palm Royale asks the same question that still baffles us today: “How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?” Set during the powder keg year of 1969, Palm Royale is a testament to every outsider fighting for their chance to truly belong.

Loosely based on the novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie” by Juliet McDaniel and produced for Apple TV+ by Apple Studios, Palm Royale is written, executive produced and showrun by Abe Sylvia for Aunt Sylvia’s Moving Picture Company, executive produced by Laura Dern and Jayme Lemons for Jaywalker Pictures, Kristen Wiig, Katie O’Connell Marsh, Tate Taylor and John Norris for Wyolah Films, Sharr White, Sheri Holman and Boat Rocker. The series is directed by Taylor, Sylvia, Claire Scanlon and Stephanie Laing.
Not only did the theme music win, this title sequence earned a nomination. It reminds me of the opening of The Flight Attendant, which also won this category in 2021. It's enough to get me to resume watching the series. It also inspires me to embed the Gold Derby interview of its composer, Jeff Toyne on how 'Palm Royale' music was 'an effective way to do comedy'.

Jeff Toyne on how 'Palm Royale' music was 'an effective way to do comedy.' For the program, Kristen Wiig navigates the social politics of an exclusive club with co-stars Carol Burnett, Laura Dern and Allison Janney. Gold Derby editor Matt Noble hosts this webchat.
Again, this demonstrates how much the creatives behind the camera and in post-production contribute to the success of a show. Congratulations to Toyne and pleasantly surprising all the experts and me, too!

Congratulations to the winning cinematographer and editor of How I Met Your Father!

Congratulations to the stunt coordinator for The Gentlemen!

I already forecast "Hacks could win both actress awards while both actors could repeat for The Bear." That's still the case, as Gold Derby's editors have predicted that The Bear will repeat in Comedy Series, Comedy Actor, Comedy Supporting Actor, Comedy Directing, and Comedy Writing, while Hacks will return with wins in Comedy Actress and Comedy Actor, along with an outside chance of winning Comedy Writing.

Again, congratulations to all the winners and good luck to the nominees. Stay tuned for one last installment of Emmy nominees tomorrow for the Sunday entertainment feature.
