John Lewis earns Chairman's Award plus movie and TV winners about politics and government at the 2020 NAACP Image Awards

For this week's Sunday entertainment feature, I'm being a good environmentalist and recycling by writing about the NAACP Image Awards.  Last year, the big winner was "Black Panther."  This year, I open with a real-life political leader earning an award.  Watch The Incomparable Rep. John Lewis Is Honored With The Chairman's Award | NAACP Image Awards from BET Networks.

For his work during the Civil Rights movement and for all he does for the country, Congressman John Lewis receives the 2020 Chairman’s Award.
Congratulations, Representative Lewis!

Follow over the jump for the awards presented to movies and TV shows about politics and government.

The NAACP Image Awards listed the big movie winner as "Just Mercy" with four awards, Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, and Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture.  Watch videos for three of the winners, beginning with “Just Mercy” Receives The Award For Outstanding Motion Picture! | NAACP Image Awards.

Honoring the career of Bryan Stevenson and his first case with Walter McMillian, "Just Mercy” wins for Outstanding Motion Picture.
"Just Mercy" beat out "Dolemite is My Name," "Harriet," "Queen & Slim," and "Us."

Next, Michael B. Jordan Wins Outstanding Actor In A Motion Picture For “Just Mercy” | NAACP Image Awards.

Michael B. Jordan dedicates his award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture to all those who have been wrongfully convicted.
Michael B. Jordan beat Chadwick Boseman from "21 Bridges," Daniel Kaluuya from "Queen & Slim," Eddie Murphy from "Dolemite is My Name," and Winston Duke from "Us."

The last clip of a winner from "Just Mercy" is Jamie Foxx Wins Supporting Actor In A Motion Picture Award! | NAACP Image Awards.

Jamie Foxx gives a motivational speech and also praises Michael B. Jordan as he accepts the Supporting Actor In Motion Picture Award for "Just Mercy" at the 51st NAACP Image Awards.
Jordan deserves every bit of praise for his acting he can get.  As for Foxx, he beat Leslie Odom, Jr. from "Harriet," Sterling K. Brown from "Waves," and Tituss Burgess and Wesley Snipes from "Dolemite Is My Name."

Finally, "Just Mercy" beat "Dolemite is My Name," "Harriet," "Queen & Slim," and "Us" for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture.  Congratulations to the cast and crew of "Just Mercy" for its four wins!

The big TV winner was "black-ish" with six awards, Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Performance by a Youth (Series, Special, Television Movie or Limited Series).  BET Networks uploaded only one clip of an actor accepting an award for the show, Tracee Ellis Ross Wins Outstanding Actress In A Comedy Series! | NAACP Image Awards.

Tracee Ellis Ross shouts out all the powerful and magical Black women in her speech for her NAACP Outstanding Supporting Actress In a Motion Picture Award.
That's an impressive roster of inspirational women!

However, one of the winners acknowledged receiving his award when Host Anthony Anderson Entertains Crowd & Opens Show At The 51st NAACP Image Awards!

NAACP Image Awards host Anthony Anderson entertains the crowd as he opens the show!
Anthony Anderson not only noted that he won Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, he explained why the NAACP and the organization's Image Awards are important.  That written, congratulations to Anderson and the rest of the cast and crew of "black-ish" for the series' six awards.

I have one more clip to share, The Phenomenal Angela Bassett Wins Outstanding Actress In A Drama Series | NAACP Image Awards.

Angela Bassett accepts her NAACP for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her powerful performance in the series “9-1-1.”
"9-1-1" may not be the most prestigious drama series, but it is a favorite of my wife and me.  I think it's a fun and positive portrayal of public safety, both fire and police, in my old home town of Los Angeles.  I'm glad Bassett won this award.  Congratulations!

As for the winners from TV shows about politics and government that didn't merit BET uploading a clip of them winning to YouTube, Omari Hardwick won Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for "Power," "When They See Us" earned Outstanding Television Movie, Limited Series or Dramatic Special, Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Limited Series or Dramatic Special for Jharrel Jerome, and Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Limited–Series or Dramatic Special for Niecy Nash, "Truth Be Told" won Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series, and "Native Son" won Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture (Television) and Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture (Television).  Congratulations to all of them!

That's it for the Sunday entertainment feature.  Stay tuned for the update to Democratic candidates continue to drift leftwards according to On The Issues I promised in Kamala Harris heading home came as a complete surprise and hinted again that I'd do in Bye-bye Booker as Cory climbs down from his campaign and Julian jumps from the plane as Castro campaign crashes.  I've been procrastinating too long on this project.
