Coffee Party USA announces the winners of the 2018 Golden Coffee Cups for movies

The volunteers of Coffee Party USA have voted on the nominees for the 2018 Coffee Party Entertainment Awards for movies, also known as the Golden Coffee Cups, so it's time to announce the winners.  "BlacKKKlansman" won Best Drama or Comedy about Politics or Government of 2017 AKA the Best Political Scripted Movie.  Chadwick Boseman won two awards, Best Portrayal of a Government Official in a Film and Best Performance by an Actor in a Political Film for his role as T'Challa, King of Wakanda, in "Black Panther."  "RBG" won two awards, first for Best Documentary about Politics or Government and the second for its subject, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, as Best Appearance of a Government Official in a Documentary.  Congratulations to all the winners for depicting what the volunteers of Coffee Party USA considered to be the best of politics and government in film during 2018!

Movies are not the only type of entertainment Coffee Party USA recognizes.  The volunteers will also be voting on the nominees and winners of the Golden Coffee Cup for television programs and their performers that demonstrate the best in politics and government.  Watch for an announcement of the nominees from the 2017-2018 television season next month followed by the nominees of the 2018-2019 season in the summer.

Follow over the jump for the nominees plus my commentary about the winners.

Aquaman
Black Panther
BlacKKKlansman
First Man
On the Basis of Sex
The Death of Stalin
The Hate U Give
Vice
After observing that "BlacKKKlansman" was the most Oscar-nominated drama about government and politics released during 2018, I'm glad to see that Spike Lee's movie won this award.  I was not optimistic about its prospects at the Oscars, thinking it could win Best Adapted Screenplay but lose Best Picture to "Green Book."  The volunteers of Coffee Party USA thought it was the most worthy scripted film nominated in our awards, while they didn't even nominate "Green Book."  Congratulations!

Best Portrayal of a Government Official in a Film during 2018.

Steve Buscemi as Nikita Krushchev in The Death of Stalin
Chadwick Boseman as King T'Challa in Black Panther

Olivia Colman as Queen Anne in The Favourite
Sam Rockwell as President George W. Bush in Vice
Saoirse Ronan as Queen Mary Stuart in Mary Queen of Scots
Rachel Weisz as Lady Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough in The Favourite
...
Best Actor in a Political Film during 2018 (all roles, not just politicians).

Steve Buscemi as Nikita Krushchev in The Death of Stalin
Chadwick Boseman as King T'Challa in Black Panther
Olivia Colman as Queen Anne in The Favourite
Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsberg in On the Basis of Sex
Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger in Black Panther
LaKeith Stanfield as Cassius Green in Sorry to Bother You
John David Washington as Ron Stallworth in BlacKKKlansman
Congratulations to the star of the highest grossing political speculative fiction film of 2018.  As I wrote in 'Black Panther' leads movie winners at the 2019 NAACP Image Awards, I was ambivalent about voting for "Black Panther" in these awards.
On the one hand, as I wrote above, "Black Panther" is about all the topics I care about in entertainment, diversity, politics and government, and fantasy and science fiction.  On the other, it really isn't about the kind of politics and government that the Coffee Party might want to reward — violent succession struggles in a monarchy are the opposite of peaceful activism inside a democracy.
The other volunteers made the decision for me, which made it much easier to hand out both awards.

Contrary to what I wrote at the end of last month, this may not be the last award for "Black Panther."  It was nominated for Best Dramatic Presentation (long form) at this year's Hugo Awards, where I think it is the favorite.

Best Documentary about Politics or Government of 2018 (Best Political Documentary for short)...

Dark Money
Fahrenheit 11/9
John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls
Mercury 13
RBG

...
Best Appearance of a Government Official in a Documentary during 2018.

Jim Acosta in Fahrenheit 11/9
Ruth Bader Ginsberg in RBG
John Glenn in Mercury 13
Barack Obama in Fahrenheit 11/9
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Fahrenheit 11/9
Richard Ojeda in Fahrenheit 11/9
I've been writing about "RBG" since it was nominated for Best Political Documentary at the 2018 Critics' Choice Documentary Awards, an award it won.  I continued supporting it when it earned two Oscar nominations.  I was disappointed but not surprised when "Free Solo" beat it for Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars.  So it should be no surprised that I'm thrilled that "RBG" won both awards for documentary awards.  Congratulations!

That's it for the movie awards.  I'll post the nominees for the television awards sometime next month.  In the meantime, stay tuned for a post about Tax Day.
