'Jon Stewart Debunks GOP’s City Crime Narrative' plus 'The Daily Show's Emmy nominations

I made a promise in the middle of John Oliver debunks 'Migrant Crime' in the middle of covering the RNC on 'Last Week Tonight'.
All the statistics about how crime in general has declined reminds me that I have three videos on the subject to share. I'll get to them in future posts.
One of those videos is Jon Stewart Debunks GOP’s City Crime Narrative | The Daily Show.

Trump called the RNC host city of Milwaukee a horrible place and is now trying to pass the insult off as a concern about crime. Jon Stewart digs into the Right's fearmongering obsession: crime in big cities. Republicans want you to believe that "lawless" Democrats are to blame, but when it comes to Democrat-run city crime, it turns out the guns are coming from red states.
I'm recycling the rogues gallery I featured in Closer looks at Trump's probation interview and Las Vegas rally from Meyers, Colbert, and Fallon to reinforce Jon Stewart asking convicted criminal Hoover Cleveland, "Are you talking about now, sir, or when you and your felonious friends come to town?"

As I wrote when I reused this image in MSNBC examines Project 2025, part 1, "Jailbirds of a feather flock together." Before Joe Biden dropped out, he called Hoover Cleveland a one-man crime wave. It makes me glad that former prosecutor Kamala Harris is running instead. The prosecutor versus the felon!

As an aside, Hoover Cleveland's impression of gunfire reminds me that I still think he sounds like Crazy Frog when he goes "bing, bing."

Finally, the crime stats show violent crime is indeed down after spiking during the pandemic, which happened when Hoover Cleveland was President, but the crime rhetoric from the Right continues. "Fvck the facts," indeed. I have two more videos that examine that phenomenon I'm saving for future posts, so stay tuned.

I wrote "I have Emmy nominations penciled in. Stay tuned" to close Vox asks 'Can Paris fix its poop problem before the Olympics?' Follow over the jump for The Daily Show's Emmy nominations.

I'm reusing 76th Emmy Nominations: Talk Series from How did Gold Derby's Emmy nominations predictions fare?

In the absence of a video description listing the shows, I'm quoting Wikipedia.
Outstanding Talk Series
  • The Daily Show (Comedy Central)
  • Jimmy Kimmel Live! (ABC)
  • Late Night with Seth Meyers (NBC)
  • The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (CBS)
Including two short-form nominations, The Daily Show has seven nominations, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has five, and both Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Late Night with Seth Meyers both have two. On that basis and being the returning winner, I think The Daily Show is likely to repeat. The editors, experts, and top 24 users at Gold Derby all agree, with all eleven editors picking The Daily Show to win and overwhelming majorities of experts and users voting for it to walk off the stage with the trophy. A minority of experts and users voted for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and one lone user so far is choosing Jimmy Kimmel Live! Someone is making a long shot bet that isn't likely to pay off.

Now for the nominated categories from the Creative Arts Emmy Awards that I didn't already cover in John Oliver debunks 'Migrant Crime' in the middle of covering the RNC on 'Last Week Tonight'.
Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series
  • After the Cut — The Daily Show (YouTube)
  • The Crown: Farewell to a Royal Epic (Netflix)
  • Hacks: Bit by Bit (Max)
  • Saturday Night Live Presents: Behind the Sketch (NBC)
  • Shogun – The Making of Shogun (FX)
Succession's short-form spinoff won this award last year in a field split between HBO dramas and Saturday Night Live, but it's over, so the field is open. Just the same, I think it's between Hacks: Bit by Bit, the one HBO nominee, and Saturday Night Live. Sorry, Gold Derby has no odds on this category, which I'll revisit when I examine the short-form nominees.
Outstanding Performer in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series
  • Eric André – The Eric Andre Show as Eric André (Adult Swim)
  • Desi Lydic – Desi Lydic Foxsplains – The Daily Show as Desi Lydic (YouTube)
  • Mena Suvari – RZR as Detective Thompson (Gala Film)
Speaking of short-form nominees, Desi Lydic has been nominated for this category before, and is the only previous Emmy nominee among the three. However, Mena Suvari has been nominated for acting awards going back 25 years and won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture SAG Award for American Beauty, so she's my pick to win. The Television Academy's equivalent of the acting branch knows her and electorates matter.

As consolation, I'm sharing Gold Derby's interview of Lydic, Desi Lydic ('The Daily Show') on guest hosting as jumping 'into the cockpit and take the controls'.

Desi Lydic ('The Daily Show') explains how guest hosting is like having to 'being asked to jump into the cockpit and take the controls.' She adds, 'Never did I think in a million years that I’d get the chance to sit at the desk but here we are and it’s really thrilling.' Gold Derby editor Charles Bright hosts this webchat.
Desi mentioned how the Fox News hosts inspired her performances, including her Foxsplains, which make this interview relevant to this category. That Good. Congratulations to Lydic on her nomination and good luck beating Mena Suvari — she'll need it.
Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series
  • The Daily Show: "Jon Stewart Returns to The Daily Show" – David Paul Meyer (Comedy Central)
  • Jimmy Kimmel Live!: "Trump Still Mad About Oscars Joke and Thinks Jimmy is Al Pacino, Chris Stapleton's Ballad for John Stamos, Guest Rob McElhenney & the Return of Our Outdoor Stage!" – Andy Fisher (ABC)
  • The Late Show with Stephen Colbert: "December 21, 2023: GOP Wants Biden Kicked Off Ballot, Bankrupt Rudy Hawks Supplements, Elf on the Shelf for Parents; Meanwhile; Anderson Cooper & Andy Cohen; Louis Cato and the Late Show Band" – Jim Hoskinson (CBS)
  • Saturday Night Live: "Host: Ryan Gosling" – Liz Patrick (NBC)
SNL won this category in January so it's my pick to repeat. The editors, experts, and top 24 users all agree with eight of nine editors, all three experts so far, and all six users so far picking SNL to win with one editor picking The Daily Show. As consolation, I'm sharing 'The Daily Show' director David Paul Meyer on Jon Stewart's return, the show's triumph at the Emmys.

'The Daily Show' director David Paul Meyer on Jon Stewart's return and the show's triumph at the Emmys. 'Well, it doesn't get boring here with all the talent that passes through,' he says. Gold Derby editor Daniel Montgomery hosts this webchat as part of the 'Meet the Experts' panel for directors.
Too bad The Daily Show canceled the show's remote segments at the Republican National Convention this year. Here's to hoping they appear at the DNC. That written, David Paul Meyer may not be likely to win, but he's having fun putting together a great show. Congratulations!
Outstanding Technical Direction and Camerawork for a Special
  • The Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show Starring Usher – Eric Becker, Rod Wardell, Rob Balton, Danny Bonilla, Kary D'Alessandro, Suzanne Ebner, Sean Flannery, Kevin French, Helena Jackson, Tore Livia, Adam Margolis, Allen Merriweather, Jofre Rosero, Keyan Safyari, J.M. Hurley, Matt Conrad, and Terrance Ho (CBS)
  • Billy Joel: The 100th — Live at Madison Square Garden – Jon Pretnar, Rob Balton, Mark Britt, Bobby Del Russo, Daniel Erbeck, Nick Fayo, Pete Forrest, Jonny Harkins, Shaun Harkins, Ray Hoover, John Kosmochewski, Jay Kulick, Kevin Murphy, Lyn Noland, Jimmy O'Donnell, Chris Piazza, Mark Renaudin, Ed Staebler, Mark Whitman, Rich York, Jeff Siegel, Brett Turnbull, J.M. Hurley, and Michael Maiatico (CBS)
  • The Daily Show Presents: Jordan Klepper Fingers the Pulse — Moscow Tools – Bernardo Garcia, Al Johnson, Andrew Maso, Patrick O'Donnel, Joel Sadler, Bart Sienkiewicz, and Jim Wells (Comedy Central)
  • 66th Grammy Awards – Eric Becker, Rod Wardell, Danny Bonilla, Mike Carr, Suzanne Ebner, Sean Flannery, Helena Jackson, Ron Lehman, Tore Livia, Adam Margolis, Allen Merriweather, Rob Palmer, David Plakos, Brian Reason, Jofre Rosero, Keyan Safyari, Easter Xua, Daniel Schade, Ryan Campbell, Scott Hazel, Peter Drinco, and Greg Hoffman (CBS)
  • Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas – Chuck Crampton, Lincoln Abraham, Charlie Bryan, Mark Cruickshank, Paul Davis, Alex Dodd, Curtis Dunne, Guiseppe Ingrao, Lewis Mutongwizo, Andre Seraille, Jeremy Mackie, Joseph Hallgate, Jon Kassell, and Simon Wood (Apple TV+)
I think the only award The Daily Show Presents: Jordan Klepper Fingers the Pulse — Moscow Tools would win is one of "one of these things is not like the others." The rest of the nominees are entertainment specials featuring music. This includes the Super Bowl halftime show, the one sort-of returning nominee and my pick to win.

Now for the categories I covered in John Oliver debunks 'Migrant Crime' in the middle of covering the RNC on 'Last Week Tonight'.
Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series
  • The Daily Show (Comedy Central)
  • Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)
  • Saturday Night Live (NBC)
Majorities of the editors, experts, and top 24 users have so far all picked Last Week Tonight with John Oliver to win. A minority chose The Daily Show. So far, no one has voted for Saturday Night Live.
The show's writers seems OK with this, as Dan Amira ('The Daily Show' head writer) on not expecting Emmy win 'because I read Gold Derby' odds.

Dan Amira ('The Daily Show' head writer) on not expecting his Emmy win last year 'because I read Gold Derby' odds. The lowered expectations that our site provided him, actually helped him enjoy the experience even more. Gold Derby's Charles Bright hosts this webchat.
I'm recycling my comment on this video.
Amira provided some great insight into navigating the political and media landscape and turning it into comedy. I'm surprised I'm only the 60th person to watch his interview and the first to like it. Also, I'm glad Gold Derby "actually helped him enjoy the experience even more." I hope this year's odds do so again, both to prepare him for the show's likely win in series and John Oliver's likely win for writing.
Now for the final category I'm covering today.
Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming (Segment)
  • The Daily Show: "The Dailyshowography of Vivek Ramaswamy: Enter the RamaVerse" – Catherine Trasborg (Comedy Central)
  • Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: "Boeing" – Anthony Miale (HBO)
  • Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: "The Sad Tale of Henry the Engine" – Ryan Barger (HBO)
  • Saturday Night Live: "I'm Just Pete" – Ryan Spears (NBC)
  • Saturday Night Live: "Bowen's Straight" – Paul Del Gesso and Kristie Ferriso (NBC)
In the absence of Black Lady Sketch Show, which won the last three years, I think the previous winner, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, has the best chance to repeat. I just hope The Daily Show doesn't sneak on through because its competition both have two episodes nominated.
One person who hopes The Daily Show sneaks into a win is 'The Daily Show' editor Lauren Beckett Jackson on Jon Stewart, 'adrenaline rush' of breaking news.

'The Daily Show' editor Lauren Beckett Jackson on Jon Stewart's return and the 'adrenaline rush' of breaking news. The Emmy nominee breaks down the workflow of program's 10-person edit team. Gold Derby editor Joyce Eng hosts this webchat as part of the 'Meet the Experts' panel for editors.
Beckett Jackson's name should look familiar, as she was part of the editing team nominated last year. Despite my rooting for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Saturday Night Live, I wish her and her team, especially Catherine Trasborg, luck.

That's a wrap for today's installment. I think I'll stick to awards coverage for tomorrow's Sunday entertainment feature, but something less time-intensive, like the 45th News and Documentary Emmy Awards nominations. One of the nominees earned a Grammy nomination, so it fits the theme. See you then!
