Did you know that when you watch (or watched, depending on when you read this entry) today's Super Bowl, you'll probably see several Emmy nominees and probably an Emmy winner or two? You will, because you did last year and several of the years before that. That's thanks to the commercials and halftime show, which has been a repeat nominee going back as far as Beyoncé's Super Bowl XLVII halftime show, which won Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special in 2013. I didn't cover that at the time, waiting until after I wrote Predictions vs. reality for Katy Perry at the Super Bowl in 2015 to post Conversations on the 2013 Super Bowl Blackout with Chad of the Hipcrime Vocab. Took me long enough. Speaking of Perry, her show won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lighting Design | Lighting Direction For A Variety Special and Outstanding Costumes For A Variety Program Or A Special. It's Katy Perry — of course she'd win for costumes!
As for Emmy nominees for Outstanding Commercial, those go back to at least 1998, the second year of the award, when Super Bowl ad American Express – Virtual Reality earned a nomination. Since then, Super Bowl ads have been regular nominees in the category. This includes the 2023 Emmy nominees for Outstanding Commercial with "Forever": The Farmer’s Dog 2023 Super Bowl Commercial and The Singularity (Extended) | Big Game Commercial 2023 | Squarespace being the Super Bowl ads nominated. Neither won, but at least they were nominated.
Follow over the jump for the Outstanding Commercial winner and the categories won by the 2023 Super Bowl halftime at last month's Creative Arts Emmy Awards along with a look at today's commercials and halftime show for the Sunday entertainment feature.
At Apple, we believe accessibility is a human right. Innovative features like Door Detection, Sound Recognition, Voice Control, and more are designed to let you use your devices in ways that work best for you. Here's what I wrote about the ad and its chances last July.
...
“I Am the Greatest (with Marliya Choir)” by Spinifex Gum
On the one hand, this is definitely selling Apple's products. On the other, it's definitely socially conscious and shows that being inclusive is good business. Take that, Ron DeSantis! The Television Academy took the social message into account. Good for them and congratulations to Apple and its ad agency, Somesuch!
...
If the voters take into account the social message, then I think "The Greatest" wins instead. I found that ad inspiring.
I mentioned this award in Trevor Noah, Wanda Sykes, and Chris Rock, comedians nominated at the Golden Globes, Grammys, and Emmys, writing "At least the Gold Derby experts think The Oscars will win Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special with three ranking it first and one picking the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show to win." That one expert, who I think is also an editor, stuck to their guns, while most of the rest got on The Oscars bandwagon, with eight experts and nine editors picking the awards show. On the one hand, oops. On the other, the movie people picked the movie nominee, so I'm not surprised. That written, congrats to Hamish Hamilton and Shawn Carter AKA Jay-Z for their Emmy and the unnamed Gold Derby editor for their correct pick!
Gold Derby does not make predictions for production design, so I wrote nothing about it for variety specials. That doesn't mean I won't congratulate the art directors and designers on their victory. Congratulations!
To celebrate, watch Rihanna’s FULL Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show from the NFL, which won't display here, even though it will generate an embed code. Go figure.
That written, wow, what an artistic and technical masterpiece! It deserved all of its nominations and awards! That made Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium beating it for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Special all the more amazing!
I'm closing by linking to Super Bowl 2024 commercials: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jenna Ortega featured in long list of teasers from CBS Sports. Other celebrities featured in today's announced include Kris Kardashian for Oreo, Ken Jeong for Popeyes, Steve Austin for Kawasaki, Wayne Gretzky, Tom Brady, and Vince Vaughn for BetMGM, Post Malone for Bud Light, Kate McKinnon for Hellmann's, Chris Pratt for Pringles, LL Cool J and Lainey Wilson for Coors Light, Quinta Brunson for TurboTax, and Zach Braff, Donal Faison, and Jason Momoa for T-Mobile. That's quite the star-studded collection, and there will be more. I won't predict which of them, if any, will earn nominations. I'll let myself be surprised in July.
On the other hand, I do expect at least one Emmy nomination for Usher's halftime show. Which one, I won't predict. Until then, I'm sharing USHER: 30 Years in the Making | Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show (Official Trailer).
Enjoy the game, halftime show, and commercials!
