Emmy-nominated 'Desi Lydic Foxsplains Accusations that Republicans are "Weird"' plus the short form Emmy nominees

My footnote to The Daily Show examines 'Harris Hunts for a VP' and the Veepstakes from left to center telegraphed my intentions for today's post.
The Daily Show uploaded the latest episode of the Emmy-nominated Desi Lydic Foxsplains this morning. I might just embed that in tomorrow's entry, then examine all the short form nominees at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Stay tuned for that, too.
Without any further ado, I'm sharing Emmy nominee Desi Lydic Foxsplains Accusations that Republicans are "Weird" | The Daily Show.

Democrats have taken time away from building a socialist abortion laser to call Republicans weird, so Desi Lydic foxsplains who the real weirdos are.
Lydic's satire shows that calling Republicans weird is working. They can't even formulate a good accusation of projection, just "I know you are but what am I?" That was a lot funnier when Pee Wee Herman said it.

At her new home of Mother Jones, Kate Abu gives explains Why the “weird” attack is working.

In this week’s video for Mother Jones, Kat Abughazaleh@katmabu breaks down the Democrats' latest attack line: calling out Republicans as "weird." The recent embrace of the word “weird” started with potential VP candidate Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, who used it on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" to describe JD Vance, President Trump, and the out-of-touch policies of MAGA types: “These guys are just weird!"

It's getting under the skin of Trump and his allies. While they argue this insult is on par with Hillary Clinton’s infamous “basket of deplorables,” let’s be real: This isn’t about name-calling for its own sake. Who in their right mind wants to eliminate the Department of Education or inspect kids before they play sports? That's just weird. Defunding libraries and banning no-fault divorce? Also weird. "Constantly talking about genitals, having an opinion about skull size, and burning books in the 21st century?" Kat says. "All of that is indisputably weird."

Ultimately, "weird" is about framing the debate in a way that cuts through the noise and speaks directly to what most people already feel: That Trump's agenda for the Republican party and the country is all a bit… weird.
Kat Abu isn't alone in explaining why weird is sticking. Here is AOC responding to Vivek Ramaswamy whining about being called weird. I put my own two cents in. Keep working that eye.

Follow over the jump for the short form nominees at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series
  • Carpool Karaoke: The Series (Apple TV+)
  • The Eric Andre Show (Adult Swim)
  • Late Night with Seth Meyers: Corrections (NBC)
  • Only Murders in the Building: One Killer Question (Hulu)
  • Real Time with Bill Maher: Overtime (HBO)
Gold Derby has no predictions for any of the short form categories, but I don't need them for this award. I can just recycle what I wrote in last year's HBO dramas and 'SNL' split the nominees for Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series at the 2023 Emmy Awards, that Carpool Karaoke: The Series is a five-time winner and my pick to return to the podium after missing last year when I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson won. It had a second nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for its star, who also won. The Eric Andre Show has a show nomination and performer nomination this year, so it's my pick to upset Carpool Karaoke: The Series.

Now for the categories I covered in 'Jon Stewart Debunks GOP's City Crime Narrative' plus 'The Daily Show's Emmy nominations.

.
Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series
  • After the Cut — The Daily Show (YouTube)
  • The Crown: Farewell to a Royal Epic (Netflix)
  • Hacks: Bit by Bit (Max)
  • Saturday Night Live Presents: Behind the Sketch (NBC)
  • Shogun – The Making of Shogun (FX)
Succession's short-form spinoff won this award last year in a field split between HBO dramas and Saturday Night Live, but it's over, so the field is open. Just the same, I think it's between Hacks: Bit by Bit, the one HBO nominee, and Saturday Night Live.
I still do, but I'll revisit this category when I examine Saturday Night Live's nominations, most likely on Presidential Joke Day.

Outstanding Performer in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series
  • Eric André – The Eric Andre Show as Eric André (Adult Swim)
  • Desi Lydic – Desi Lydic Foxsplains – The Daily Show as Desi Lydic (YouTube)
  • Mena Suvari – RZR as Detective Thompson (Gala Film)
Speaking of short-form nominees, Desi Lydic has been nominated for this category before, and is the only previous Emmy nominee among the three. However, Mena Suvari has been nominated for acting awards going back 25 years and won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture SAG Award for American Beauty, so she's my pick to win. The Television Academy's equivalent of the acting branch knows her and electorates matter.
All three nominees have Twitter campaigns, but Lydic's was to get her nominated. Eric André's and Mena Suvari's are to get them to win. See below.

I still think Suvari is favored, but André has the best chance of upsetting her for this award, just like his show has the best chance of beating Carpool Karaoke: The Series in the series category. I'm giving André the spotlight in the form of his Gold Derby interview, Eric André on his 1st Emmy nominations for 'The Eric Andre Show' and his most 'taboo' pranks.

Eric André on his 1st Emmy nominations for 'The Eric Andre Show' and his most 'taboo' pranks. His Adult Swim series was nominated for Best Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series and he earned an additional bid for Best Performer. Gold Derby editor Denton Davidson hosts this webchat.
Sounds like a fun show that belongs on Adult Swim.

That's a wrap for today's entry. Stay tuned for more awards coverage in tomorrow's Sunday entertainment feature.
