Ray 'CityNerd' Delahanty explains why 'Car Brain Is a Scourge on Society,' a driving update

Pearl the Prius passed 71,000 miles yesterday, so it's time for a driving update, beginning with Ray 'CityNerd' Delahanty explaining why Car Brain Is a Scourge on Society.

Car brain is insidious, and it seeps into seemingly everything. Let's explore.
I watched this yesterday, then experienced car brain as I drove to work. A man in a Mercedes tailgated me, then gave the "come on" gesture. I sped up to get away from him, then briefly tapped my brakes to tell him to back off. Dude, I'm already driving five miles over the speed limit along a stretch of road that the police patrol. Do you want me to break the law more so you can, too? He then passed me and had to wait for someone else to turn right to get to his destination. Hurry up and wait.

CityNerd Ray reminded me of a video I watched in school more than 50 years ago, Goofy - Motor Mania.

A classic Goofy episode from the 50's!

In fact, from 1950. Car brain has been around that long.

That's the general situation. Follow over the jump for my personal update.

As I wrote above the jump, Pearl passed 71,000 miles yesterday, Thursday, January 8, 2026, 119 days since she passed 70,000 miles on Thursday, September 11, 2025. That translates to 8.40 miles per day, 256.30 miles per standard month, and 3,067.23 miles per standard year. That's significantly less than the 9.35 miles per day, 285.05 miles per standard month, and 3,411.21 miles per standard year I drove her between May 27, 2025 and September 11, 2025. It's also less than half the 18.18 miles per day, 554.55 miles per standard month, 6,636.36 per standard year, and 6,654.55 miles per leap year I drove Pearl during the equivalent period during Fall 2024. Wow! That's not what I expected, which was to drive Pearl more than I did during the summer and less than last year, but not that much less! What happened?

First, I replaced two 17-mile round trips each week with one ten-mile round trip. That's 14 miles per week right there. Second, that ten-mile round trip was actually more convenient for errands than the 17-mile round trip, as a lot of my shopping was along its route, so I wouldn't have to drive out of my way, which I would have had to had I kept my regular commute. Third, my wife or I would be driving Ahsoka the Gray on the days I wasn't driving to work, so she would accrue more of the shopping miles. Fourth, my wife injured herself on December 1st and couldn't drive, so I've been driving Ahsoka since. Pearl had been on the verge of turning over 71,000 miles since the first week of December, which was when I had been expecting to write this report. I finally drove her yesterday, delaying this entry by a month. I don't expect the last item to happen again.

That's a wrap for today's driving update. Stay tuned for more awards show coverage tomorrow.
