Something unexpected and potentially irreversible is changing Antarctica and scientists finally know why.Climate scientists and oceanographers have been so concerned about the AMOC weakening and collapsing because of the Greenland ice sheet melting that we've ignored the threat to the Global Conveyor Belt current from melting in Antarctica. We can't do that anymore, not once the Antarctic sea ice began to shrink the same way that Arctic sea ice had been for decades. At least Antarctic sea ice growing will no longer be a viable climate change denial talking point. Small favors.
Over the past few decades, researchers have tracked the mysterious growth and sharp decline in sea ice in Antarctica. But a few years ago a troubling discovery was made that could upend global ocean circulation, push one species of penguin to extinction, and change our planet’s climate forever.
In this episode of Weathered, Maiya May looks into the role sea ice plays in our global climate, and the threat that its disappearance poses to our natural world.
From emperor penguins, to sea level rise, to the slowing of the AMOC, these seemingly inconsequential chunks of floating ice could hold the key to our survival. And their loss could be a sign that we’ve crossed a tipping point in an already delicate region of our planet.
Follow over the jump for the most read and active posts about climate change and extreme weather during the 15th year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News.

'Weathered' explains 'This Is EXACTLY How Much Poorer Climate Change Will Make Every Person on Earth' from September 6, 2025 was the most read entry posted between March 21, 2025 and March 20, 2026 and the fifth most read overall with a total of 1,540 raw page views and four comments. It earned its page views first from Steve in Manhattan shared the link at Mike’s Blog Roundup, contibuting to it earning ~1,160 default and 1,320 raw page views during September 2025. I also shared it at the Citizen Connect/Coffee Party USA Facebook page. I then submitted it to Batocchio for inclusion in Jon Swift Roundup 2025. Among all three plus normal social media promotion and web search, it ended calendar year 2025 with 1,421 raw page views (it had lost its default page views by then). The entry is continuing to earn page views; it's currently at ~1,570. It also tied WeightWatchers files for bankruptcy, a tale of the Retail Apocalypse (and Ozempic) for most comments on an entry posted during the 15th year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News and most comments on an entry that aren't spam.
Next, an entry I included in The 1969 Cavaliers playing 'The Ten Commandments' for a drum corps Flashback Good Friday/Passover, a holiday special.

Steve in Manhattan linked to PBS Terra asks 'The Biggest Climate Scam Ever?' for a Flashback Friday Arbor Day from April 25, 2025 in Mike's Blog Roundup at Crooks and Liars. That helped attract 294 default and 298 raw page views during April 2025, ranking the entry third by the first measure, fourth among entries posted during the month, and sixth overall. It ended the blogging year with 472 raw page views, tying it with 'SNL50: The Anniversary Special' leads nominees for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) at the Emmys for 50th among entries posted during the 15th year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News and 71st overall. It's continued to attract page views, reaching 481 by April 3, 2026.I return to posts I haven't examined before.

Infidel753 linked to PBS Terra examines 'The Real Reason People Move Toward Risk' from June 11, 2025 at Link round-up for 14 June 2025, helping it garner 173 default and 216 raw page views during June 2025, ranking it sixth by the former for the month, second among entries posted during June 2025, and seventh overall for the month by the latter. It's continued to attract readers with 469 raw page views as of April 8, 2026.

The back catalog has one representative in today's retrospective with Polar vortex and difference between climate and weather explained from January 9, 2014 earned 428 raw page views from web search during the blogging year to tie for 83rd overall last year.
I close with one of the most active shares on Threads last year.

PBS Terra says 'We Just Crossed Our FIRST Tipping Point… And It’s NOT What You Think' earned 1 repost (most for month and tied for second most for year on Threads) and 1 share (most for year on Threads) on 107 views.
That's a wrap for climate and weather during the blogging year. Stay tuned for two videos about food history on Throwback Thursday and another retrospective for Flashback Friday. In the meantime, enjoy Wednesday Addams, the mascot for Wayback Wednesday.
