As I wrote yesterday, "Stay tuned for the action movie nominees on National Daiquiri Day as the Sunday entertainment feature." Here are the nominees.
Best Action MovieThe Furious leads with three nominations; the rest of the field is tied at two apiece. I'll go with The Furious based on its three nominations here and its Astra Midseason Movie Award for Best Stunts, although The Rip has an Emmy nomination and Sisu: Road to Revenge won a Saturn Award.
The Furious
Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice
Motor City
The Naked Gun
Normal
The Rip
Sisu: Road to Revenge
Follow over the jump for the acting nominations and my analysis of what these nominations might mean for the Saturn Awards.
Miao Xie may be in the best movie, but he's splitting The Furious vote with Joe Taslim and they're both up against stiff competition. Matt Damon is an Oscar winner, albeit for his writing, and the biggest star, Taron Edgerton is an Emmy and Golden Globe nominee and an underrated actor, and Bob Odenkirk is a two-time Emmy winner for his writing and a Critics Choice Award winner for his acting. I'd bet on Damon.
Charlize Theron is my choice to win this award based on her Oscar and Critics Choice Award wins; in fact, she won this category for Mad Max: Fury Road when it was part of the main Critics Choice Awards ten years ago. The other big names are Pamela Anderson and Priyanka Chopra Jones; they're not in Theron's league as actresses, but they are certainly stars.
I wrote "the action movies so far are weak" when considering the genre category placement for Send Help and examining the nominees in detail hasn't changed my mind. It doesn't help that these movies could be distributed among three or even four categories at the Saturn Awards. The Furious could just as easily be nominated as an international film as a action film, although it might be highly regarded enough to earn nominations in both like RRR – Rise Roar Revolt. The Rip could be nominated for Best Action Film, Best Thriller Film (it is about crime and mysteries/crime movies end up here), or Best Presentation on Television; it is a streaming movie, after all. The same is true of The Bluff, Apex, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, and Pretty Lethal — all streaming movies that could be split among Best Action Film, Best Thriller Film, or Best Presentation on Television. No wonder The Naked Gun earned two nominations here. It's the only major theatrical release nominated. Even then, it could be nominated for either Best Action Film or Best Thriller Film and my money would be on thriller.
As far as anyone of these winning Best Action Film, their only chance is The Odyssey being nominated for Best Fantasy Film instead of Best Action Film. Otherwise, they're toast. I won't make any predictions for Best Thriller Film or Best Presentation on Television. Those categories are too fluid. As for Best International Film, I have Godzilla Minus Zero penciled in for that award.
Now for two holidays being celebrated today. First, today is also NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY | July 19 in addition to National Daiquiri Day.
This strawberry daiquiri is the best tropical rum cocktail made with fresh strawberries. After blending the drink, pour in cocktail glass and alternate layers of vanilla ice-cream. This daiquiri is the best dessert cocktail on a hot day! The sweeter the strawberry, the better the cocktail! Please remember to drink responsibly. That's a wrap for today. I'll resume with the television nominees after celebrating National Moon Day. Moon base and Artemis III, anyone?
