'Love on the Spectrum' leads Unstructured Reality Program at the Emmy Awards


I'm stepping over the fine line between nonfiction and reality for today's awards show coverage by examining nominations for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program
  • America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (Netflix)
  • Love on the Spectrum (Netflix)
  • RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked (MTV)
  • Summer House (Bravo)
  • Welcome to Wrexham (FX)
Love on the Spectrum leads with five nominations, followed by Welcome to Wrexham with four, America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked tied at two, and Summer House with just this one. That's close to how the Gold Derby odds rank their odds. Every expert, 83.3% of editors, and 87.6% of users picked Love on the Spectrum to repeat. The editors and users split on which shows could upset the leader. America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders is the choice of the remaining 16.7% of editors but no users, while 7.5% regard RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked as the runner-up with Welcome to Wrexham at 4.3% and new nominee Summer House as the selection of the final 0.5%.

I'm glad to see America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders repeat its nomination and Summer House replace The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. The latter was trashy fun, but it struck me as exploition of exploitation.

Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program

  • Love on the Spectrum – Cian O'Clery, Ashley Morgan, Sean Bowman and Emily Frisbie (Netflix)
  • RuPaul's Drag Race – Goloka Bolte, Michelle Redwine and Adam Cook (MTV)
  • Survivor – Jesse Tannenbaum, Caitlin Moore, Penni Lane Clifton and Heidi Hill (CBS)
  • Top Chef – Ron Mare, Joy Barrett, Sena Rich, Heather Allyn and Anna Sturgeon (Bravo)
Love on the Spectrum is the defending winner, so it's the nominal favorite. That written, it's facing stiff competition from, no joke intended, the competiton programs. In fact, that's a pattern this season, as the structured reality program nominees have only one nomination each. I'll get to that tomorrow.

The Traitors won this last year, so it's my pick for favorite.

  • Love on the Spectrum: "Episode 1" – Cian O'Clery (Netflix)
  • RuPaul's Drag Race: "Grand Finale" – Nick Murray (MTV)
  • Top Chef: "Carolina Roots" – Anna Moulaison (Bravo)
  • The Traitors: "Let the Cards Fall as They Will" – Ben Archard (Peacock)
The Traitors won this last year, so it's my favorite here, too.

Outstanding Picture Editing for an Unstructured Reality Program

Despite my choice of preview image, Welcome to Wrexham is the returning winner, so I think it will repeat.
