Twins on Earth and Space


I'm going to have something serious in the morning.  Tonight, I present two stories on twins from Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday (Kepler-186f).  First, University of Cincinnati brings the news about twins on Earth in Double the PharmD(NA) in 2014 Pharmacy School Class posted April 17, 2014.
To the best of recollections, there's never been a set of twins graduate from the James L. College of Pharmacy, so it's a pretty safe bet that 2014 is the first year the college will graduate two sets: identical twins Kayla and Michelle McWilliams and fraternal twins Ameera and Jameela Aladimi- all of whom will receive their PharmD degrees on April 27.

"We make independent decisions, but a lot of times we still wind up in the same place," Kayla McWilliams says of their choice to carry on a family tradition and attend pharmacy school at UC.
Next, Science at NASA talks about twins in space in ScienceCasts: Separated at Launch.

Next year, with the assistance of the world's only twin astronauts, NASA will conduct an unprecedented experiment in human biology. While one twin remains on the ground, the other will circle Earth onboard the International Space Station for a full year. Will the twins still be identical when they are re-united? The answer could help NASA make space travel safer for generations of astronauts to come.
Here's to these three sets of twins contributing to health, science, and space.

More energy and the State of the Union


I'm not done with Energy and climate in the State of the Union.  It turns out that being Secretary of Energy singles one out for special treatment during the speech.  Time explains in This Man Will Be Your President If The Worst Happens.
If the unthinkable happens during Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz will assume the role of President of the United States.

Moniz, the 12th person in the line of succession for the Oval Office, will be protected by Secret Service agents at an undisclosed location as the so-called “designated survivor” while President Barack Obama delivers his address to Congress. Meanwhile, the vice president, members of the Cabinet, Supreme Court justices and others will gather at the Capitol to listen to the president’s annual address.

...He’s better liked inside the administration than his predecessor—and last year’s designated survivor—Steven Chu, who was considered by some administration officials to be a political loose cannon.
It just so happens that I have articles about both men, beginning with Virginia Tech's Nobel laureate talks about innovation in modern research world before capacity Burruss audience.
BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 14, 2013 – Steven Chu, a Nobel laureate and a former United States Secretary of Energy, talked about how to create a research and development environment modeled after the famously successful “Bell Labs” on Friday during the initial Hugh and Ethel Kelly Speaker Series presentation, hosted by the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) and the College of Engineering.

Chu said researchers in today's research climate are forced to concentrate on their best ideas, work in small groups, and to collaborate with experts from different fields. In that respect, it reinforces the Bell Laboratories' philosophy to build small research groups containing usually just an investigator, a postdoctoral associate, and a lab technician, and to have active scientists fill the management roles.

"A small group makes you think hard about the most important things to work on, and being forced to share ideas may be a good thing," Chu said. "That's the lemonade from the lemons."
Next, Science Magazine updates its readers with the people around the new Energy Secretary in Obama Names Energy Science Team.
President Barack Obama has added two academic researchers to his new science team at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Obama yesterday announced his intention to nominate chemical engineer Franklin "Lynn" Orr, a professor and administrator at Stanford University in California, to fill the newly created position of undersecretary for science and energy. The same announcement tapped physicist Marc Kastner of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge to lead DOE’s Office of Science, which manages a $4.6 billion research portfolio. Last week, the White House picked physicist Ellen Williams, chief scientist at energy giant BP and a former longtime professor at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, to run DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).

If approved by the U.S. Senate, the trio will round out Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz’s leadership team for DOE’s civilian research programs, which include 10 national laboratories run by the Office of Science.

Health news from the University of Cincinnati

I concluded Hurricane Sandy and the Boston Marathon Bombings in this week's health news by noting there was more where those came from.
I have even more stories from the University of Cincinnati that didn't make it into last week's Overnight News Digest.  I'll post them later, I'm changing my focus from Boston, New Jersey, and Virginia to states and cities holding elections through the end of the year as listed in the 2013 Daily Kos Elections Calendar along with the cities listed in Nobody cares about mayoral races in the Washington Post that I haven't been covering so far.  They may be great sources for health stories or they may be weak.  In either event, those stories from the University of Cincinnati may come in handy.  Until then, farewell, Rutgers, BU, NYU, Columbia, UVA, and VT!  It's been fun covering your research and outreach!
As it turned out, the universities I covered in Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday (Dog origins) had plenty of health research and outreach stories, so I didn't need the ones from the University of Cincinnati to fill out the health section.  So, it's time to say farewell to the UC Bearcats as well.

As I strive to always have an image or video with my entries, I present this video promoting the university's M.D./Ph.D. program, which trains people for both medical research and service to the community.

That seems to be true in more ways than one. Something that is increasing the cost (and hopefully effectiveness) of American medicine, medical research, is going full-blast. I’ve been collecting the research press releases from all the research universities in jurisdictions holding elections...for the past two months, and every week I have a huge entry full of nothing but health news to post.

Kepler findings and other space news

More was going on in space last week than GOCE falling to Earth.  NASA Television has an overview of U.S. space news in Kepler Conference on This Week @NASA.

During the Kepler Science Conference at Ames Research Center, the science community discussed the latest news from the Kepler mission's hunt for exo-planets.... which are planets outside our solar system Among the findings -- 833 newly discovered candidate planets -- 10 of those orbiting in their sun's habitable zone -- a distance at which their surface temperature may be suitable for liquid water. Also, Full house on ISS, The New Chief & MAVEN, Russia Meteor Study and High School Satellite.
NASA has more on the lead story in Administrator Bolden on Kepler Mission Findings.

Scientists working on this mission both inside and outside government will continue to explore potential planets outside our solar system for years to come, based on the spacecraft's groundbreaking work.

Among the amazing findings, a stunning result that found that there may be many more Earth-like planets than previously thought in the Milky Way.
For a space enthusiast like me, that's good news, although some of them might already be dead.  Science at NASA describes our efforts to find out who done it to our neighbor in ScienceCasts: What Happened to Mars? A Planetary Mystery.

Mars was once on track to become a thriving Earth-like planet, yet today it is an apparently lifeless wasteland. A NASA spacecraft named MAVEN will soon journey to Mars to find out what went wrong on the Red Planet.
Finally, in keeping with the theme of science on campus that I've been exploring at Daily Kos and importing back here for the past two-and-one-half months, here is the University of Cincinnati showing its memorial to a late former faculty member who just happened to be the first human on the Moon: UC Honors Neil Armstrong with Exhibit and Digital Collection.

The University of Cincinnati announced on Nov. 6, 2013 the vision for a Neil Armstrong Space Science Institute and an important research partnership with NASA's Ames Research Center while also honoring the life of Neil Armstrong, who taught at UC from 1971 to 1979.

The University of Cincinnati has announced a forward-looking effort to promote space-based research while also looking back on the life of the first man on the moon.

"Although Neil Armstrong was a private and unassuming hero who preferred not to be in the spotlight, the University of Cincinnati community wanted to do something to honor his memory and his achievements,” said UC President Santa Ono. “We wanted to do it in a way that takes into account how we at the University of Cincinnati knew him best — as a teacher and an engineer, as a pilot and astronaut.

“The relief at Rhodes, the scholarships, our partnership with NASA and our other activities are all intended to carry on his legacy of probing new frontiers and inspiring the pursuit of scientific inquiry.”

Veterans Day on campus

I uncovered a lot of colleges observing Veterans Day while collecting stories for last night's Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday (Super Typhoon Haiyan).  The result was such a great aggregation of videos and articles that I am reposting all of them here.

Rutgers University goes first with Veterans Transition to Civilian Life at Rutgers.

When you've handled life and death in war, an exam in the classroom doesn't seem like such a big deal. But some veterans say succeeding in classes and fitting in were their biggest concerns when they came to Rutgers as nontraditional students. "Everyone has said 'thank you' and that is a huge thing," one veteran said. "It goes miles with us vets."

November 28 will mark Juan Hernandez‘s first Thanksgiving home after three years of active military duty with the U.S. Air Force, and he can practically taste his Mexican-born mother’s signature chicken tamales.

During his service abroad, the Rutgers student helped in the mission to bring American Foreign Service workers home from Benghazi after the deadly 2012 attack on their compound. He took part in humanitarian projects in Africa, dropping water bottles in Mali and Ethiopia to ensure residents had safe drinking water at hand. He trained forces in Ghana.

Now Hernandez is anticipating a series of firsts in the coming months: first birthday home after lengthy postings in Spain, Germany and Africa; first Christmas and New Year’s out of the military; and even today, his first Veterans Day as a veteran.

In his first semester at Rutgers’ School of Management and Labor Relations, where he’s majoring in both human resource management and labor studies, Hernandez says thoughts of home and family were never far from his mind throughout his years overseas.

Predictably, this week’s rollout of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) received attention high in volume and intensity. While the administration signs up uninsured Americans flooding the health insurance exchanges, the government is shuttered thanks to a deadlock over opponents’ efforts to repeal the act, or failing that, to starve the implementation process for funds.

As one who has written about health policy for many years, I find the opposition to be nothing less than maddening. Some, like Senator Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), are just nasty and cynical. As the New York Times’ Gail Collins points out, he wants to kill the act because it is bound to be popular, and therefore, hard to take away from people later on. Others continue to spew falsehoods about the law. Either they have not taken the time to inform themselves of the facts or they just don’t care what the facts are. It is maddening because the issues are serious, they affect us all, and those guys treat it like a game in which the only prize is a government job for themselves in the national legislature, where, historically at least, the object was to pass legislation.

While the law is hard to master because it is long and has many parts, most of the ideas are pretty simple and have been around for a long time. What follows is an attempt to set the record straight on the assumption that not everyone is taken in by the cacophony from the far-right chorus.
I couldn't agree more.

University of Virginia brings Emily Drake discusses New Postpartum Testing, which bears on a story I reported in Last night's top news from Reuters.  It turns out that that the poor woman who attempted to crash the gates at the White House and Capitol and was shot dead for her trouble was reported to have been suffering from post-partum depression.

Nursing professor Emily Drake's character lends a touch of humor to a serious condition that affects 10 to 15 percent of women after childbirth.

Renewable energy news from campuses on the campaign trail

Since I can't be all doom all the time, here are a couple of sustainability good news stories from Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday (ACA and shutdown on campus).  First, Virginia Tech presents Biomass Bounty.

When processed correctly, wood chips, corn stocks, and manure can be used as fuel to create electricity. The Department of Sustainable Biomaterials is researching how best to convert waste from forestry and agriculture into power.
Next, a follow-up University of Cincinnati explores energy from waste.

UC's "Team Effuelent" Trumps Competition with Trap Grease, Wins $40,000 Prize
UC's Team Effuelent won the $40,000 top prize of the Odebrecht Award for Sustainability Development Competition with the innovative concept of “Using Trap Grease As the Raw Material for Biodiesel Feedstock Production.”

The University of Cincinnati student entrepreneurship team that’s fueling worldwide media attention is at it again. Team Effuelent recently took the $40,000 top prize of the Odebrecht Award for Sustainability Development Competition with their innovative concept of “Using Trap Grease As the Raw Material for Biodiesel Feedstock Production.”

Team Effuelent is led by UC students Ron Gillespie, Carl H. Lindner College of Business industrial management student; Ethan Jacobs, College of Engineering and Applied Science ACCEND student earning his bachelor's degree in civil engineering and also his MBA; and Qingshi Tu, UC doctoral environmental engineering student. The top three winning teams of the 2013 Odebrecht Award for Sustainable Development were unveiled Sept. 9, 2013, at the award ceremony in Miami, Fla.

The team’s innovative Waste Grease Extraction process extracts substances such as fats, oils, and greases from the municipal wastewater stream and converts them into a low-cost biodiesel feedstock using processes compatible to the current biodiesel industry.

Not only does the WGE process generate a marketable product of value, it also results in lowered landfill costs for wastewater treatment plants and positively contributes to the environmental, economic, and energy sustainability of the United States.
Stories like this make the Crazy Eddie in me hopeful.

Biodiversity research from campuses on the campaign trail

I'm still not up to compiling another entry about the shutdown, so instead I'm presenting the biodiversity stories from Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday (IPCC report released), three of which happen to be from the University of Cincinnati.

I begin with a video of UC Research on Lemurs, Fragmented Forests.

UC research by Brooke Crowley on forest fragmentation in eastern Madagascar draws upon the connection between the plight of the native tree-dwelling lemurs and the health of the forests in which they live.

Deforestation in Madagascar has possibly put these cute creatures in crisis.

Save the lemurs, save the forest ... save the world?

Though extreme, that theory isn't inconceivable to Brooke Crowley, an assistant professor of anthropology and geology at the University of Cincinnati. Her research on forest fragmentation in eastern Madagascar draws upon the connection between the plight of the native tree-dwelling lemurs and the health of the forests in which they live.

Environmental consequences of forest loss are not isolated to Madagascar. Crowley believes that her work on this island could have broader implications. Forest loss could eventually have an effect on the health of the planet.
Next, some less heroic species, albeit in a heroic ecosystem, star in Four Decades Later, Meyer Finds Caribbean Complexities.
Returning, after 45 years, to a Jamaican reef, University of Cincinnati paleontologist David L. Meyer finds a very different ecological habitat, with some inhabitants thriving while others are wiped out.

The coral reefs of the Caribbean Sea have had a rough couple of decades, afflicted with coral disease, hurricanes, a die-off of algae-controlling sea urchins, over-harvesting of coral-friendly fish and the effects of global warming, according to paleontologist David L. Meyer, professor of geology in UC’s McMicken College of Arts & Sciences.

Surveying one coral reef in Jamaica after 45 years, Meyer found that some species are clearly distressed today, while others are flourishing in a very changed habitat.

“It’s not a dead-zone situation,” Meyer said. “There is a diversity of life. It’s just very different from what it was.”
To complete the journey from the sublime to the ridiculous, Auburn University examines cyanobacteria in Auburn University and Alabama Extension System researchers study harmful algal blooms.

The head of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s aquaculture resources team and a fellow Auburn University faculty member are working to gain a deeper understanding of algal blooms, those prolific aquatic organisms that are increasingly causing headaches not only for water treatment facilities, parks and zoos but also for pond owners and others exposed to these blooms. The researchers will use this heightened understanding to educate people about how they can prevent the spread of harmful blooms and to reduce exposure to them.

This effort is made possible with funding from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Russell “Rusty” Wright, an Extension fisheries specialist, aquaculture resources team leader and associate professor in the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences, and Alan Wilson, an associate professor of Fisheries, are especially interested in blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, taxa known to produce off-flavors in public drinking water.
If any group survives a collapse of the portion of the biosphere dependent on solar energy, it's the cyanobacteria or "blue-green algae."  I'm not worried about them.

Fracking research from campuses on the campaign trail


Last night's Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday (IPCC report released) included two stories about fracking from juridisctions with state and municipal elections this November.  The first, from the University of Virginia, proposed a way we could have our cake and eat it, too.

U.Va. Researcher: Methane Out, Carbon Dioxide In?

A University of Virginia engineering professor has proposed a novel approach for keeping waste carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

Andres Clarens, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at U.Va.’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, and graduate student Zhiyuan Tao have published a paper in which they estimate the amount of carbon dioxide that could be stored in hydraulically fractured shale deposits after the methane gas has been extracted. Their peer-reviewed finding was published in Environmental Science and Technology, a publication of the American Chemical Society.

The team applied their model to the Marcellus Shale geological formation in Pennsylvania and found that the fractured rock has the potential to store roughly 50 percent of the U.S. carbon dioxide emissions produced from stationary sources between 2018 and 2030. According to his estimate, about 10 to 18 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide could be stored in the Marcellus formation alone. The U.S. has several other large shale formations that could provide additional storage.
That would be nice, if it could be done in a way that doesn't cost more energy than the original fracking produced.  On the other hand, it would do nothing about the other environmental issues that come with fracking.  The University of Cincinnati is investigating those in Tapping a Valuable Resource or Invading the Environment? At an international forum, preliminary research out of the University of Cincinnati examines groundwater resources near hydraulic fracturing operations in the Buckeye State.

Amy Townsend-Small, a University of Cincinnati assistant professor of geology, will present on the study on Sept. 27, at the 10th Applied Isotope Geochemistry Conference in Budapest, Hungary.

The team of UC researchers spent a year doing periodic testing of groundwater wells in Carroll County, Ohio, a section of Ohio that sits along the shale-rich Pennsylvania-West Virginia borders. The study analyzed 25 groundwater wells at varying distances from proposed fracking sites in the rural, Appalachian, Utica Shale region of Carroll County. Because the region is so rural, the majority of the population relies on groundwater wells for their water supply.

“This is a major area for shale gas drilling in Ohio, and one reason is because shales in the area are thought to have a good amount of liquid fuel as well as natural gas,” says Townsend-Small.

The researchers are currently analyzing samples from groundwater wells over a one-year period, with water samples drawn every three-to-four months.

The samples are being analyzed for concentrations of methane as well as hydrocarbons – a carcinogenic compound – and salt, which is pulled up in the fracking water mixture from the shales, which are actually ancient ocean sediments.

“We’re examining changes over time resulting from fracking, and since this is just beginning in Ohio, we have the opportunity to make some baseline assessments,” says Townsend-Small.
The results should be interesting.

University of Cincinnati explores energy from waste


In this installment of sustainability-related research news from campuses on the campaign trail, I present two stories from the University of Cincinnati I originally included in Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday (IgNobel Prizes) about their students' efforts to produce renewable energy from waste.

UC Business and Engineering Students Win First Place in National Sustainability Competition

A group of students from UC’s Carl H. Lindner College of Business and the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) took first place to earn the 2013 Odebrecht Award for Sustainable Development.

Ronald Gillespie, BSIM ’14; Ethan Jacobs, CEAS ‘13, MBA ’14; and Qingshi Tu, CEAS ’15; presented their Bearcat Clean Energy startup business idea called Effuelent in Miami on Sept. 9 to win $40,000, topping teams from University of California Berkeley and Florida International University to win.

Effuelent, a Waste to Energy company, extracts fat, oil and grease from wastewater to produce a low-cost biodiesel feedstock. Currently those substances are regarded as waste and end up in landfills. Through technology developed by UC CEAS professor Mingming Lu, Effuelent uses a waste grease extraction process produce a low-cost alternative (soy, rapeseed and corn oils) to expensive agricultural based biodiesel feedstock.

What’s usually considered old garbage might be a promising asset for our energy supply, according to University of Cincinnati researchers.

For many of us, it’s the fuel that wakes us up and gets us started on our day. Now, University of Cincinnati researchers are discovering that an ingredient in our old coffee grounds might someday serve as a cheaper, cleaner fuel for our cars, furnaces and other energy sources.

Yang Liu, a graduate student in environmental engineering in UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS), presents a summary of early-but-promising discoveries on his team’s research at the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) 246th National Meeting & Exposition this week in Indianapolis.

The researchers launched the project in 2010, gathering waste coffee grounds in a five-gallon bucket from a Starbucks store on UC’s campus. After collection, they removed the oil from the waste coffee grounds and converted triglycerides (oil) into biodiesel and the byproduct, glycerin. The coffee grounds were then dried and used to purify the biodiesel they derived from the waste coffee grounds.
I teach Barry Commoner's Laws of Ecology to my students every semester.  Two of them are there is no away and nature knows best.  Both of those laws share the idea that there is no waste in nature.  All matter cycles in ecosystems and one organism's leftovers are another organism's food.  Therefore, a nature knows best solution to our energy issues would include extracting energy from our refuse, just like both of these projects.  Also, both recycle what is considered low-quality matter and convert it into high-quality matter that can be turned into high-quality energy.  That's exactly what a low-throughput economy requires.  Here's to both of these ideas scaling up to commercially successful levels.

I have been under the weather for the past week and went to see my primary care physician today (yesterday by the time this entry posts).  To reflect this, I'm posting health care and health research news from campuses on the campaign trail.  All stories were originally included in Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday (LADEE launched) and Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday (IgNobel Prizes).

Cindy Sickora runs a mobile healthcare program in Newark. Suzanne Willard heads a wellness center. Together, two leaders of Rutgers nursing schools are striving to make healthcare accessible to city residents, who are among the most underserved in the nation.
