The '2023 Emmys Celebrates Diversity With Most Winning Actors of Color' for the week of MLK Day

I celebrated diversity in acting winners at the Golden Globes on Sunday, so it's time to do the same for the Emmy Awards winners, as I promised thrice. The Hollywood Reporter made it easy for me by uploading 2023 Emmys Celebrates Diversity With Most Winning Actors of Color.

The 2023 Emmy Awards were its most diverse yet! The Emmys celebrated its 75th anniversary on Monday night after being pushed 4 months due to the dual writers and actors strikes. Appropriately falling on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the show handed out five of the 12 acting Emmys during the telecast to performers of color.
In addition to Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, Niecy Nash-Betts, Ali Wong, and Steven Yeun winning as actors, Lee Sung Jin won three Emmys for producing, writing, and directing Beef, the last of which he shared with Wong and Yeun, who IMDB lists as executive producers of the limited series, for five Primetime Emmys for the show. Added to the three Creative Arts Emmy Awards the show won, that's a total of eight, tying it with The Last of Us and only surpassed by The Bear with ten total Emmy Awards.

The Hollywood Reporter also noted that RuPaul won a 15th Emmy for RuPaul's Drag Race and Trevor Noah won for The Daily Show. IMDB shows the former is warranted, as it lists RuPaul as a producer. On the other hand, I'm not seeing Noah listed as a producer of The Daily Show, so he may have accepted the award, but I don't know if he gets to keep it. That may be an omission on the part of IMDB, not a mistake by The Hollywood Reporter. I found two errors in the IMDB page for the 51st Saturn Awards and the IMDB pages for the Environmental Media Association (EMA) Awards are complete messes. It's enough to make me want to volunteer for the EMA to fix them as a retirement project.

Follow over the jump for The Hollywood Reporter mentioning other dimensions of diversity recognized at Monday night's ceremony.

Now for excerpts from 2023 Emmys Ties Record for Most Winning Actors of Color that didn't make the video.
The Television Academy recognized GLAAD with its Governors Award for its pioneering and leading work pushing for fair, accurate and diverse representation of LGBTQ+ people. “What the world sees on TV influences how we treat each other and the decisions we make in our living rooms, schools, at work and at the ballot box,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “When you don’t know people, it’s easy to demonize them. Visibility creates understanding, and it opens doors. It’s life-saving.”
Here's the full presentation and acceptance speech from the Television Academy.

Well said. Now back to The Hollywood Reporter's article.
The first presenter of the night was Christina Applegate, who walked onstage with a cane, accompanied with a personal care assistant. “You’re totally shaming me with disability by standing up,” quipped the actress, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, waving off her standing ovation. Later, she said of her onstage companion, “I actually don’t need him here, he’s just really cute.”

RespectAbility vp entertainment and news media Lauren Appelbaum found Applegate’s attitude refreshing. “I really appreciated when she told the audience they don’t have to applaud every time she does something,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “She should receive recognition for her fantastic acting abilities, which she did by receiving a nomination.”
Appelbaum also noted that Applegate’s onstage presentation came right before the announcement of the category in which the Dead to Me star was nominated (lead actress in a comedy): “It wasn’t lost on me that she presented shortly before her nomination to ensure she would be backstage in an accessible location should she have won.”

Keeping with the theme of celebrating iconic television, the final presenter of the night was Game of Thrones alumnus Peter Dinklage, who has dwarfism and won four individual Emmys for playing Tyrion Lannister on the show.
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all the presenters!

I'm not done with diversity among winners at the Emmy Awards. I'm planning on examining diversity in acting, hosting, and voice acting at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards next in the series. Stay tuned, even if I don't get to it tomorrow.
