'Ripley' wins most Creative Arts Emmy Awards for limited series, but 'Baby Reindeer' favored to win five Primetime Emmys

I told my readers to "Stay tuned for one last installment of Emmy nominees tomorrow for the Sunday entertainment feature" at the end of 'The Bear' leads comedy winners and nominees at the Emmy Awards, so I begin by noting that, unlike comedy and drama series, the nominee expected to dominate at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards did not come out of the 76th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards with the lead in awards. The big winner last Sunday was Ripley with three Emmy Awards so far, Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special, and Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode, as the image above shows. Baby Reindeer, which is favored to walk away with five Emmy Awards tonight, came in second with two statuettes for Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Picture Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Four limited series nominees earned one Emmy Award each. American Horror Story: Delicate acquired the award for Outstanding Contemporary Costumes for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Feud: Capote vs. The Swans swept off with Outstanding Period Costumes for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Carlos Rafael Rivera of Lessons in Chemistry came away with Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score). Masters of the Air flew away with Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Congratulations to all the winners!

Follow over the jump for celebrations of the Creative Arts winners for limited series and looks ahead to the limited series nominees contending at tonight's ceremony.

I begin with Gold Derby's interview of the winner for Outstanding Period Costumes for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Lou Eyrich ('Feud: Capote vs. The Swans' costume designer) on the 'simple elegance' of Babe Paley.

Lou Eyrich ('Feud: Capote vs. The Swans' costume designer) on the 'simple elegance' of Babe Paley. She designed the costumes for the title characters, including the famous author Truman Capote and the New York socialite women known as "the swans" about whom he wrote. Gold Derby's David Buchanan hosts this webchat as part of the 'Meet the Experts' panel for costume designers.
As a scholar and academic, I appreciate someone who does their research!

Next, Gold Derby interviews the winner of Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie before their victory, Michael Minkler and Dave McMoyler ('Masters of the Air' sound): 2024 Emmy nominees.

Michael Minkler, nominated for both his sound mixing and sound editing, and Dave McMoyler (honored for sound editing) had their hands full. Minkler headed a team that spent four days recording the sounds of the B-17 bomber alone. "We did it very elaborately with 60 microphones in the air, on the ground, everything that moves and makes noise on a B-17," Minkler, a three-time Oscar winner, describes. In the numerous battle scenes, meanwhile, he nots that "there's everything that could possibly kill you going on, between the flak and the gunshots and planes crashing into one another, people falling out of planes...It was very horrendous, and it took a lot of work. We obviously tried to make it (sound) as dramatic and exciting as possible."
That was part one. Emmy nominees Duncan McRae, Thor Fienberg ('Masters of the Air' re-recording mixer, scoring mixer) counts as part two.

Duncan McRae and Thor Fienberg, nominated for Best Sound Mixing for a Limited or Anthology Series, reveal that the nine-parter that consumed more than a year and a half in post production was quite the massive undertaking from a sonic perspective. "We were working om all nine episodes concurrently," stresses McRae. "We didn't finish Episode 1 and then move on to Episode 2. It was constantly evolving and quite an elaborate effort. As the beautiful visual effects were coming in for one episode, we had a team of editors working behind the scenes to enhance and improve on what we had and create new sounds. We were able to enhance the texture and feeling and emotion by portraying each scene in a different way through mixing." Fienberg, who worked on mixing the musical score, teamed with Neely to "let the action of war and the great sound effects they created come through."
As I wrote about the winners of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards for comedy and drama series, these interviews demonstrate how much the creatives behind the camera and in post-production contribute to the success of a show.

I'm saving Gold Derby's interview of Carlos Rafael Rivera for the diversity among Emmy Awards winners entry I postponed to write James Earl Jones passes at 93, so I'm embedding Lessons In Chemistry instead.

That's very pretty, but I can hear why Palm Royale beat it for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music — more complexity and exposition of character.

To represent Baby Reindeer at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, I'm sharing 'Baby Reindeer' casting directors (Best Limited/Movie Casting) 2024 Emmys press room interview.

"Baby Reindeer" won Best Limited/Movie Casting at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys.
The casting Emmy Awards serve as bellwethers for the series awards, and this seems to be the case this year, with Shogun, The Bear, and Baby Reindeer all winning casting and all being overwhelmingly favored to win their series categories.

I close the winner interviews with Robert Elswit (Best Cinematography, 'Ripley') 2024 Emmys press room interview.

Robert Elswit won Best Cinematography for the "Ripley" episode "V Lucio" at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys.
Hearing Elswit credit the production and costume designers heartens me. He recognizes how the crew complements each other.

Ironically, none of the above winners were the most nominated limited series. True Detective: Night Country had 19 nominations, while Fargo had 15. Fargo is likely to walk away from tonight's ceremony empty-handed, while True Detective: Night Country should earn one award out of those 19 nominations. Good thing both are likely to earn nominations at the Saturn Awards. I'm looking forward to seeing them on my ballot.

Gold Derby's editors unanimously or overwhelmingly have chosen Baby Reindeer to win limited series, limited series actor, limited series supporting actress, limited series directing, and limited series writing. They mostly think Oscar winner Jodie Foster will win limited series actress, followed by Oscar winner Brie Larsen and multiple Emmy nominee Juno Temple. Foster already earned a Saturn Award while True Detective: Night Country was airing and she will almost certainly be on the ballot again for her performance.

One limited series is likely to win an award tonight without being nominated for series itself, Fellow Travelers, where Gold Derby's editors generally chose Jonathan Bailey to win limited series supporting actor over Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. for The Sympathizer and Tom Goodman-Hill for Baby Reindeer. This is one category Baby Reindeer won't pick up in a sweep.

Gold Derby uploaded three videos from editors and experts, but I'm only embedding only one featuring editors I didn't feature in Gold Derby's predictions for TV movie and music at the Emmy Awards. It's also the shortest. Watch Gold Derby Editors Chris Beachum, Rob Licuria predict 25 Emmy categories in 25 minutes.

Editors Chris Beachum, Rob Licuria predict 25 Emmy categories in 25 minutes. It's an annual tradition going back many years for the duo to debate their final picks. They are both expecting major domination by three shows: 'The Bear,' 'Shogun' and 'Baby Reindeer.'
Let's see if Gold Derby's editors call tonight's categories. Stay tuned for a series of entries about the winners, which will be good to share next month, as this blog passed its page view goal for September overnight.
