Michigan to mail ballots and $400 million for elections in coronavirus stimulus bill update the election news and views for the ninth year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News

Happy Flashback Friday!  I told my readers to stay tuned yesterday for a retrospective about the second most read entry posted during the ninth year of this blog and others on the same topic today.  According to the default counter, that entry was Joe Walsh walks away from the Republican primary and says he'll support the Democratic nominee, which earned ~1,640 default and 1,719 raw page views between being posted on February 7, 2020 and March 20, 2020.  Since it was about the 2020 election, I'm using it as the theme of today's retrospective.  Since the big story right now is the coronavirus pandemic, I begin by looking at the pandemic's effect on elections and voting.

Since this is a Michigan-based blog, the first story I am featuring comes from the Great Lakes State.  13 On Your Side in Grand Rapids reports Secretary of State offices to close, May ballots to be mailed out amid stay at home order.

As part of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's stay at home executive order, all Secretary of State branches will close through April 13. The SOS will also be mailing all May ballots.
That Michigan will be voting by mail in the May election is good news.  Let's hope that, if the pandemic persists, the same will happen for the August and November elections as well.

On the national level, MSNBC covered the topic of voting during the pandemic during last night's All In with Chris Hayes.  Here's the segment: Stacey Abrams On How Coronavirus Stimulus Package Shortchanges Election Funding.

Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams tells Chris Hayes that the $400 million Congress set aside for election funding is a start. But not enough. Aired on 3/26/20.
I agree with Abrams.  $400 million is a good start and better than the $140 million Republicans originally proposed.  However, it almost certainly isn't enough.  FiveThirtyEight reported that "Democrats were initially demanding $4 billion to expand voting access; the Brennan Center estimated it would cost about $2 billion to implement voting reforms."  I'll take the Brennan Center figure, which makes $400 million a mere down payment on what's required to make voting work during a public health crisis.

Follow over the jump for how the second most read entry according to the default counter got its page views along with the other top posts about Election 2020 from the ninth year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News.

As I opened this entry by writing that Joe Walsh walks away from the Republican primary and says he'll support the Democratic nominee earned ~1,640 default and 1,719 raw page views between being posted on February 7, 2020 and March 20, 2020, I'll expand on those stats.  The entry ended February 2020 with ~1,650 default (yes, the default page views can decrease over time) and 1699 raw page views to be the second most read entry of the month and the most viewed one actually posted during February.  It earned most of its page views from being shared at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page, but Infidel753 shared the link at his blog and Crooks and Liars, giving it a big boost.  Thanks Infidel!  In addition to being the second most read entry posted during the ninth year of this blog according to the default counter, it was the third most read according to raw page views and the fourth most read overall.*

CNBC explains why the Electoral College exists came in close behind Joe Walsh walks away from the Republican primary and says he'll support the Democratic nominee.  Between February 15 and March 20, 2020, it garnered ~1,530 default and 1,607 raw page views, which earned it third place among entries posted during the ninth year of the blog according the default counter, fifth place according to the raw counter, and sixth overall.  It was the third most read entry during February 2020, ending the month with and ~1,530 default and 1579 raw page views.  Most of the page views came from being shared at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page with a boost from Tengrain at Crooks and Liars.

February continued to be a good month, both on the 2020 election and overall, as Colbert, Kimmel, and Noah react to the State of the Union Address and Iowa Caucuses, the opening of Episode 5, Season 4 of 'The Worst Wing' attracted 918 default and 970 raw page views between its posting on February 5, 2020 and March 20, 2020.  That was enough for it to rank eighth for the year according to the default counter, 13th among entries posted during the ninth year of the blog according ot the raw counter, and 18th overall.  It was also the fourth most read entry during February 2020, ending the month with 914 default and 954 raw page views.  Like all the rest of the top entries, it earned its page views by being shared at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page.

The fourth top post from February 2020 was Democratic candidates from left to center for the 2020 primaries, which earned 891 default and 933 raw page views between February 24, 2020 and March 20, 2020.  As a result, it ranked ninth among entries posted during the blogging year just ended according to the default counter and 15th according to the raw counter.  Including entries from the back catalog, it ranked 20th overall.  It was also the fifth most read entry of February 2020, ending the month with 895 default and 898 raw page views.  The curse of the default counter taking away page views strikes again!  Speaking of "again," it earned its page views by being shared at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page.

My long-time readers will probably expect a drum corps entry somewhere among my top posts, so they won't be surprised to see A drum corps Super Tuesday 2020 here.  Between my posting it on March 3, 2020 and the end of the blogging year on March 20, 2020, it earned 853 default and 902 raw page views, ranking 12th according to the default counter among entries posted during the ninth year of the blog, 17th during the same time period according to the raw counter, and 22nd overall for the blogging year.  The entry is currently the second most read entry of March with 851 default and 904 raw page views.  It earned its page views from multiple sharings on Facebook, both at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page but also on the drum corps groups there.  The link was also active on Twitter, where it had the most impressions during the first twenty days of March 2020 with 513 and 2 engagements (1 retweet and 1 like).

Full-sized original at In These Times.

I conclude with two entries from June.  The first, both in terms of posting time and ranking, was Democratic presidential candidates from left to center from Voteview.  Between its posting on June 1, 2019 and March 20, 2020, it collected 793 default and 1,269 raw page views, enough for it to rank 15th according the default counter, seventh among entries posted during the ninth year of the blog and ninth overall.  It was the most read entry during June 2019 with 773 default and 876 raw page views.  It earned most of its page views from being shared at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page, with Infidel753 giving it a boost by sharing the link at his blog.  Once again, thanks Infidel!  I also linked to it in a series of blog posts, including Democratic candidates from left to center for the 2020 primaries and the next entry.

The second was OnTheIssues.org's take on the Democratic presidential candidates from left to center.  While it didn't make the top 20 for the ninth blogging year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News, it did earn 942 raw page views between being posted on June 15, 2019 and March 20, 2020, enough for it to rank 14th among entries posted last year and 19th overall.  The entry ended June 2019 with 692 default and 754 raw page views, making it the second most read post of the month.  It earned most of its page views from being shared at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page, but Infidel753 shared the link at his blog and Crooks and Liars, giving it a big boost.  For the final time today, thanks Infidel!  It also had an active life on Twitter, with the tweet including its link earning 5 engagements and 225 impressions, including 3 replies in 1 thread, tying it for the most replies to one of my tweets during June 2019.

That concludes today's extensive retrospective on the 2020 election.  Given the way the election is going, I expect more popular posts in next year's edition of this series.

*I'll use the second most read entry posted during the ninth year according to to the raw counter of this blog as a headliner for a retrospective about holidays and Puerto Rico statehood combined.  Stay tuned.

  1. Voting by mail is great. If Michiganders get to do it in this year's elections, I predict they'll want to keep it permanently.

Abrams is always a rational voice. She'll continue to be heard from.

Finally a map of the Electoral College I can support -- all the states are blue!

    1. I'll take your word for it as an Oregonian. I have voted absentee the past two elections, but I dropped my ballot off at the clerk the night before instead of mailing it. I'll probably mail the May ballot.

      I agree about Abrams.

      LOL.
