'The Traitors' won two Emmy Awards for National Coming Out Day

Happy National Coming Out Day! I usually examine Emmy Awards won by reality programs, but skipped that tradition last year because of the writers' and actors' strikes. I'm returning to it today by re-examining Gold Derby's predictions for reality programs at the Emmy Awards.

Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program
  • RuPaul Charles - RuPaul's Drag Race (MTV)
  • Alan Cumming - The Traitors (Peacock)
  • Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Kevin O'Leary and Robert Herjavec - Shark Tank (ABC)
  • Kristen Kish - Top Chef (Bravo)
  • Jeff Probst - Survivor (CBS)
Nine editors voted for RuPaul to return to the stage, while two agree with the Gold Derby TV Awards voters that Alan Cumming will win. The experts are less sure with five picking RuPaul and four choosing Cumming. In contrast, the top 24 users agree with the editors that RuPaul will reign supreme for one more year, while four chose Cumming.
There has been no change since Sunday. I would pick RuPaul to RePeat.
I never did register at Gold Derby, but I would have been wrong anyway, as Cumming won. His win keeps the LGBTQ+ theme of today going, as Cumming is bisexual and an LGBT activist. That partially makes up for RuPaul's Drag Race, Queer Eye, RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked, and We're Here all being shut out, despite two of them being favored to win their categories.

To celebrate Cumming's first Emmy, I'm sharing Entertainment Tonight's Alan Cumming Reacts to Beating RuPaul for Emmy for Best Host.

Alan Cumming chats with ET's Nischelle Turner after winning Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program for season 2 of 'The Traitors.'
Cumming should be impressed by beating RuPaul; that's not an insignificant achievement.

Now to revisit the predictions for Cumming's second Emmy.
Outstanding Reality Competition Program
  • The Amazing Race (CBS)
  • RuPaul's Drag Race (MTV)
  • Top Chef (Bravo)
  • The Traitors (Peacock)
  • The Voice (NBC)
RuPaul's Drag Race has won this category five of the past six years, including earlier this year for 2023 and the forecasters at Gold Derby agree, as ten of eleven editors, eleven of sixteen experts, and fifteen users have chosen it as the winner. One editor, five experts, and six users think The Traitors could walk away with the statuette in an upset (three users haven't made up their minds yet). I would pick RuPaul's Drag Race given the opportunity.
Like me, the remaining top 24 users jumped on the RuPaul's Drag Race bandwagon with one user switching from The Traitors to RuPaul's Drag Race. I bet they regret that decision, as The Traitors won. Watch Reality Competition Program: 76th Emmy Awards from the Television Academy.

The Team from The Traitors accepts the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition Program at the 76th Emmy Awards.
Congratulations to Cumming and the rest of The Traitors team!

Outstanding Structured Reality Program
  • Antiques Roadshow (PBS)
  • Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (Food Network)
  • Love Is Blind (Netflix)
  • Queer Eye (Netflix)
  • Shark Tank (ABC)
Queer Eye has won this category six years in a row and the prognosticators at Gold Derby generally agree that it will extend its streak to seven with nine editors, six experts, and 20 of the top 24 users picking it to win. Two editors, one expert, and four users think Shark Tank will upset Queer Eye. In addition, one expert each have made long-shot picks for Love Is Blind and Antiques Roadshow. If I voted for Love Is Blind, it would be an expression of sympathy for Vanessa Lachey, who was unpleasantly surprised when CBS canceled NCIS: Hawaii, a show my wife and I enjoyed. Otherwise, no. As for Antiques Roadshow, I think Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has a better chance of winning Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special. I'd pick Queer Eye to win once more.
And, again, I'd have been wrong. It was runner-up in the odds Shark Tank that won. Watch Gold Derby's 'Shark Tank' hosts and producers (Best Structured Reality Program) 2024 Emmys press room interview to celebrate the show's award.

"Shark Tank" won Best Structured Reality Program at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys.
I think the last time I blogged about an award for Shark Tank was at the 2020 Environmental Media Association Awards, where it won in the reality television category. I'm recycling my reaction from four years ago.
I think "Shark Tank" is a worthy winner of the first pure reality show category, not because of the sharks themselves, but because of the entrepreneurs competing on the show. They often have good environmental products and services to pitch and they deserve to be recognized.
Congratulations to the Sharks, the other producers, and the entrepreneurs!

Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program
  • Below Deck Down Under (Bravo)
  • Love on the Spectrum U.S. (Netflix)
  • RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked (MTV)
  • Vanderpump Rules (Bravo)
  • Welcome to Wrexham (FX)
Welcome to Wrexham won this category last year, and Gold Derby's editors and top 24 users overwhelmingly agree it will repeat, with all eleven editors, seven of eight experts, and 23 of the top 24 users picking it to win. One expert and one user voted for Love on the Spectrum U.S. to win, which is not an unreasonable choice, as it won this category in 2022. Still, if I get around to registering on Gold Derby tonight or tomorrow, I'd pick Welcome to Wrexham.
Unlike the previous two categories, the experts at Gold Derby, broadly constituted, and I called this category. In addition to Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, the show also won Outstanding Picture Editing for an Unstructured Reality Program and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Reality Program. I'm celebrating all three with the one interview of an Emmy winner with ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ sound mixer Mark Jensen on the Season 2 episode that makes him most proud from Gold Derby.

‘Welcome to Wrexham’ sound mixer Mark Jensen on the Season 2 episode that makes him most proud. Heading into new episodes of the hit show from producers Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, he wasn’t ready to rest on his laurels. Gold Derby editor Christopher Rosen hosts this webchat as part of the 'Meet the Experts' panel for sound editors and mixers.
I'm reusing what I wrote in 'SNL' returns with Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris after winning six Emmy Awards to begin my reaction.
I had no idea how important 3-D printing had become in hair, makeup, and costuming until I watched this video — technology in entertainment that isn't special visual effects! Welcome to science fiction times! Also, this makes today a good day because I learned something new.
I can now say the same for artificial intelligence (AI) and sound. It's another good day. Also, congratulations to all the winners for Welcome to Wrexham!

Runner-up in the odds Love on the Spectrum U.S. didn't walk away from the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, empty-handed, earning statuettes for Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program and Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program.

To celebrate, I'm sharing Actress gossip's Love on the Spectrum has won two more a significant boost in the hearts of viewers.

Love on the Spectrum, a reality show based on an Australian format, has won two more Emmys at the 76th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. The show, which follows people on the autism spectrum, has won five Emmys for Northern Pictures, making them one of the most-awarded production companies in Australia. The show has also won outstanding directing and outstanding casting awards, highlighting the importance of caring for its cast.
Congratulations to Cian O'Clery, Sean Bowman, Marina Nieto Ritger, and Emma Choate on their wins!

I'm closing out this entry with two more Emmy Awards for reality TV, The Voice winning Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured Reality or Competition Program and Life Below Zero winning Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program, its seventh victory in this category.

Congratulations!

I plan on returning to the Emmy Awards with the diversity in Emmy winners posts I've been promising. Stay tuned.
