Part one of marching music for Super Tuesday on Marching Music Day

Happy Marching Music Day! March Forth! As I promised twice, I'm celebrating with a marching music Super Tuesday featuring the corps and bands from Super Tuesday states east of the Mississippi River.

I begin with the same corps I opened the past two Super Tuesday posts with, the Boston Crusaders. Watch Boston Crusaders | #dci2022 | Paradise Lost from Drum Corps International (DCI).

Boston, MA | 2nd Place (tie) | 97.325

Boston, Massachusetts' Boston Crusaders perform a segment from the corps' #DCI2022 production, "Paradise Lost," during the 2022 DCI World Championships hosted August 12-14 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Don't bite that apple!

Vic Firth Marching uploaded the entire show as Boston Crusaders 2022 | DCI Finals Week Rehearsal | Full Production.

We're going BEYOND the lot to bring you a "pieced together' full production run of the 2022 Boston Crusaders show entitled "Paradise Lost.' Recorded over the course of a 3 hour rehearsal on Thursday, August 11th, this video APPROXIMATES a full production run-through (as best we could, given all the variables)! We hope you enjoy the video!
It's Vic Firth, which makes drum sticks, so of course the video focuses on the percussion.

FloMarching uploaded a clip from last year's show, Boston Crusaders 2023 'White Whale' Prelims Percussion Feature - 2023 DCI World Championships.

That was certainly the most nautical and fun part of the show. Once again, Vic Firth Marching has the complete program in Boston Crusaders 2023 | DCI Finals Week Rehearsal | Full Production.

We're going BEYOND the lot to bring you a full (edited together) production run of the 2023 Boston Crusaders show entitled "White Whale.' Recorded in rehearsal on Thursday, August 10th. We hope you enjoy the video!
I was so looking forward to typing "the whale lives" until I realized that the guard wasn't at this rehearsal. Darn. The show gained so much from their part of the performance.

Returning to DCI, I'm sharing Boston Crusaders | #DCI2021 | "Zoom" , the corps' pandemic program.

Boston Massachusetts' Boston Crusaders performs a segment from the corps' #DCI2021 production, "Zoom," during the DCI Celebration events hosted August 12-14 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
That was so much fun that, at the risk of overkill, I'm sharing Vic Firth Marching's Boston Crusaders 2021 Full Production | BEYOND THE LOT. Yes, I am a Boston Crusaders fan.

Vic Firth takes you BEYOND the lot with the BOSTON CRUSADERS as they perform their 2021 production "Zoom" during the DCI Celebration week in Indianapolis, IN!
That was a lot more entertaining than I expected from a show named after a video conferencing app!

Since I wrote that this is a marching music Super Tuesday and not a drum corps Super Tuesday, I'm embedding UMASS Minuteman Marching Band - 2018 Pasadena Rose Parade from Music213.

From Amherst, Massachusetts The University of Massachusetts (UMASS) Minuteman Marching Band performing at the 129th Annual Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on Monday, January 1, 2018
In case they look familiar, the University of Massachusetts (UMASS) Minuteman Marching Band were one of the bands featured in Two drum corps and some of my favorite bands marching in the New Year for 2018.

Time to move on from Massachusetts. Follow over the jump for drum corps and marching bands from the rest of the Super Tuesday states east of the Mississippi.

Traveling down the eastern seaboard, the next DCI competitive corps is Sonus Brass Theater - 2017 DCI SoundSport - Indianapolis, IN from Woodbridge, Virginia.

This is a group I should have featured four years ago, but I missed them. Darn.

I've been featuring bands that competed in Metallica's For Whom The Band Tolls in this series, so here is the small high school champion, Parade to Black - Oakton High School Marching Band from Oakton, Virginia.

I think the wigs alone won them their class in the contest.

North Carolina is an important state, but no longer has a competitive drum corps. It did, so I'm sharing Carolina Gold 2013 Mission Accepted.

Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps performing their program at the Drum Corps Associates World Championship Finals in Annapolis, MD at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium
Musical selections include Original Music

Gold got 10th place at DCA Open Class Finals with a score of 84.030
They are not listed as a DCA corps or as a DCI All-Age corps, so they're probably gone, but I hope some corps takes their place in North Carolina.

Moving inland, I'm sharing two units from Tennessee, beginning with Music City Drum Corps 2022 Semi-Finals reaction from March Or Die TV.

This was a really cool show. Colors were on point and the corps did a great job. I loved the concept and I really enjoyed the staging and the performance level of all of the members. I think they are poised to move up in the next year or 2 and can't wait to see what they do!
I always enjoy Justin the Stress Master's take on drum corps.

Next, from Kingsport, Tennessee, the large high school winner and high school fan favorite in the Metallica marching band contest, Dobyns-Bennett High School Marching Band Presents "The Music of Metallica".

Submission for the Metallica Marching Band Competition
The Dobyns-Bennett High School Marching Band knew exactly who the audience would be for this show — Metallica fans — and wrote the program according. It worked. Congratulations on the double title!

Continuing down to the Gulf Coast, six units from Alabama made the cut for today, beginning with 22nd Southwind 2023.

Sadly, Southwind will not be returning this summer. Sigh.

Next, the Division I college winner and college fan favorite in the Metallica marching band contest, Metallica Halftime Show [OFFICIAL] | AUMB 2023.

The 2023 AUMB's Metallica Halftime show, performed at the Auburn vs Ole Miss football game on October 21, 2023 in Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn, AL.

Our show opens with For Whom the Bell Tolls, one of Metallica’s greatest hits and the official title of their marching band video competition.

Our initial sound effects and the swinging-bell animation drill that follows are our attempt to recreate the opening of Metallica’s 2022 concert in São Paulo, Brazil. The show continues with their 1992 tour anthem, Wherever I May Roam. The middle segment of our show pays homage to Metallica’s legendary guitar skills with the title track from their 1986 album, Master of Puppets. Our show continues with one of Metallica’s most popular power ballads, Nothing Else Matters. And, of course, no Metallica tribute is complete without Enter Sandman.

The lighting system used by our band was built by Auburn band students with assistance from our College of Engineering. Many thanks to Ben Brisendine (Auburn band alumnus) for his work designing and updating our system and for his creative programming of the lighting component of our show.

We hope you enjoy the Auburn University Marching Band’s performance of Metallica!
That was an amazing assembly of lighting, technology, music, and showmanship! Well done!

I can't mention Auburn without including its archrival. Watch The University of Alabama Million Dollar Band - 2024 Pasadena Rose Parade from Luis of Music213.

From Tuscaloosa, Alabama, The University of Alabama Million Dollar Band performing at the 135th Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on Monday, January 1, 2024.
I had no idea until I watched the Rose Parade that the Bama Band also played Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk." I think Luis went to USC, whose marching band played on the original track and continues to play "Tusk." I wonder how he feels about this version. Maybe I should ask him.

Now for two finalists in the Metallica marching band contest from Alabama, beginning with Nothing Else Matters (Whole Show) by Pell City High School's Marching Band of Gold, a medium high school finalist.

Pell City High School's Marching Band of Gold presents: Nothing Else Matters
The band wrote that for marching band fans more than Metallica fans, but I'm a marching band fan, so I appreciated it.

Now small high school finalist Cleveland High School Golden Force Marching Band performing Metalocalypse | 2023 Metallica Marching Band Competition | For Whom The Band Tolls!.

Cleveland High School Golden Force Marching Band's submission for the 2023 Metallica Marching Band Competition - For Whom The Band Tolls!
They were certainly enthusiastic!

I conclude today's post with an HBCU band, Alabama State University Marching Band - 2019 Pasadena Rose Parade.

From Montgomery, Alabama The Alabama State University Mighty Marching Hornets performing at the 130th Annual Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on Tuesday, January 1, 2019.
With that, I'm done for today. Stay tuned for part two tomorrow, when I feature the competitive drum corps and select marching bands from Super Tuesday states west of the Mississippi River.
