Celebrate National Science Fiction Day with 'The Last Jedi' atop the 2017 box office


Happy National Science Fiction Day!  Yes, that's a real day, which I'll explain over the jump.  Right now, I'm following up on the prediction I made at the end of Drink to 'The Last Jedi' and 'Jumanji' atop the box office for Boxing Day 2017.
Finally, "The Last Jedi" is within easy striking distance of "Wonder Woman" and could pass it by this Friday to become the second highest grossing movie of 2017.  It will eventually pass "Beauty and the Beast" to earn about $600 million in domestic box office and well over $1 billion worldwide, becoming the highest grossing film released this year, but that will happen well into January.

Since "the Force awoke" in 2015, each new "Star Wars" film has brought in upwards of $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
The other milestone was passing "Beauty and the Beast" to become number one at the 2017 box office.  Once again, "I wasn't optimistic enough about the movie's performance at the box office!"  Maybe I should increase my projection for its total domestic box office to $700 billion.  Anyone else think so?

National Science Fiction Day is celebrated annually on January 2nd by millions of science fiction fans across the United States.

The date of January 2 was chosen for National Science Fiction Day as it corresponds with the birth date of famed science fiction writer Isaac Asimov.

American author and Boston University professor of biochemistry, Isaac Asimov was born Isaak Yudovich Ozimov on January 2, 1920.  He was best known for his works of science fiction and his popular science books.  Isaac Asimov, whose works are followed by many, died on April 6, 1992.

Considered a master of hard science fiction, Asimov, along with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, was considered one of the “Big Three” science-fiction writers during his lifetime.   The Foundation Series is regarded as Asimov’s most outstanding piece. His other major series are the Galactic Empire Series and the Robot Series.

Some of the successful television shows that are recognized by science fiction fans include Star Trek-The Next Generation, The X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who and The Twilight Zone.
To conclude the celebration, I'm going to rank 2017's speculative fiction movies at the domestic box office as of New Year's Day according to Box Office Mojo.  I will note that every one of the top ten for the year is a speculative fiction film as well as most of the top twenty.  I'll also note that I stopped after the top 200, which means that a couple of animated films, "Sword Art Online: The Movie - Ordinal Scale" and "Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions" and a superhero film, "The Inhumans," didn't make the list, along with other films that escaped my attention.

Science Fiction

There are big dropoffs from number one to number two and again from six to seven.  I expect Downsizing would pass "Life" and "Geostorm" when its run is completed.  Just the same, the mediocre nature of most of the past year's science fiction releases stands out, especially if "Transformers" and "Power Rangers" are considered action.

Again, there are big gaps between the top movie and the next three and again between four and five.  As for "The Shape of Water," it could pass "The Dark Tower" if it wins as many awards as I think it might.  As for "Colossal," that's a better movie than the numbers suggest.  It also might be better placed as a thriller.

Unlike the other genres, these movies are all in the same ballpark in terms of box office.  This should also be the Saturn Award field for Comic-to-Movie adaptation with the possible addition of "Ghost in the Shell," which is an adaptation of a manga.

This was another good year for animation, and this list doesn't even include "The Breadwinner," which I expect will be nominated for an Oscar.

  1. It's a bit depressing how dominated the market is by sequels, remakes, and reboots, but I guess these numbers show why. The revenues needed for success are so huge (and these numbers represent just one country, not total global revenues) that production companies don't want to take risks on anything new. The most successful movie that wasn't a sequel or remake was It, and that was adapted from a novel from an extremely popular writer. The field is so dominated by "franchises" that the deck is stacked against anything totally original -- audiences might not know what to make of it, and given ticket prices these days, they're probably less likely to take a chance on a movie when they have less idea what to expect.

    I hope the term "speculative fiction", ugly as it is, will come into widespread-enough use to stop the ongoing debasement of the term "science fiction", which has already become so broad it's almost meaningless. I don't think the Star Wars movies qualify as real science fiction at all, for example -- they're sword-and-sorcery stuff with planets and spaceships for scenery, much more similar to Lord of the Rings than they are to 2001 or The Andromeda Strain. That's not to say they're bad movies, but they're not real science fiction.

    At least Alien fans have shown that it is, in fact, possible to screw up a concept so badly that audiences will reject it. That being said, there has probably never been a "franchise" that trashed its source material as badly as the last few movies in this one have. At this point, probably the only way to save it would be to de-canonize everything after Aliens and start over. But I'd rather see the resources spent on doing something completely new.

    1. Actually, there has never been a Wonder Woman movie before, so even though it is part of a franchise, the DCEU, it is still the most original movie in the top ten. I wouldn't even count it as a remake of a TV Series, as I don't think the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman had the same origin story. Speaking of remakes of TV shows, "It" qualifies, as the 30-year-old miniseries was pretty famous.

      If one wants completely original, "Dunkirk," which wasn't on my list, was the 12th highest grossing film of the year and the most lucrative that will be seriously considered for Best Film at the Oscars. For films that I do mention in this entry, I would say "Coco" in 14th and "Get Out" in 16th qualify as the most original speculative fiction films that earned more than $100 million.

      I would say being too original and different hurt some films. The one that comes to mind is "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets." My wife and I watched it and thought it was fun and that it was a shame it wasn't better appreciated.

      I agree that speculative fiction is a clunky term, but it's the best one that serves as an umbrella for science fiction, fantasy, horror, and superheroes. It also allows works that sit on the boundaries of these genres to be recognized without having to figure out which one they belong to.

      When you responded to my comment about "Alien: Covenant" that you weren't too keen on the Star Wars movies, that it was more fantasy than science fiction was the reason I expected for your opinion. I won't disagree with you. As I've written elsewhere, the magic system in Star Wars is better worked out than the science. That shows up in Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMO that my wife and I play. It's very easy to map the classes to the Warrior, Rogue, Healer, and Mage found in fantasy MMOs.

      As for the Alien movies, the real problem has been the prequels. In Star Wars, that added depth. In Alien, that just screwed things up.
