'The Walking Dead' vs. 'American Horror Story: Cult' plus Saturn Awards for the seventh year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News

Happy Flashback Friday!  For today's tribute to the past, I'm combining this year's version of 'The Walking Dead' vs. 'Westworld' at the 2017 Saturn Awards with the retrospective about the Saturn Awards I promised near the end of Climate for the seventh year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News.  Yes, an analysis of the competitors for Best Horror Television Series combined with a look back at one of the top posts of the year.  Synergy from synchronicity!

Enough meta.  "The Walking Dead" has seven nominations, the most of any show, Best Horror Television Series, Best Actor on a Television Series for Andrew Lincoln, Best Supporting Actor on a Television Series for Khary Payton, Best Supporting Actress on a Television Series for Danai Gurira and Melissa McBride, Best Performance by a Younger Actor on a Television Series for Chandler Riggs, and Best Guest-Starring Performance on Television for Jeffrey Dean Morgan.  Its stablemate in the franchise, "Fear the Walking Dead," has three, Best Horror Television Series, Best Performance by a Younger Actor on a Television Series for Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Best Guest-Starring Performance on Television for Michael Greyeyes.  Their main competition, at least in terms of number of nominations and mainstream recognition, is "American Horror Story: Cult" with four nominations, Best Horror Television Series, Best Actress on a Television Series for Sarah Paulson, Best Supporting Actor on a Television Series for Evan Peters, and Best Supporting Actress on a Television Series for Adina Porter.  All eight categories for which the horror shows are eligible have at least one nominee from the three shows.  For the rest, here are the nominees, along with my comments, some of which I have recycled from How did my Saturn Awards television submissions fare? O.K., I guess and What if the entertainment professionals voted on the television acting nominations at the Saturn Awards?
Best Horror Television Series:

"American Horror Story: Cult" (FX)
"Ash vs. Evil Dead" (Starz)
"Fear the Walking Dead" (AMC)
"Preacher" (AMC)
"The Strain" (FX)
"Teen Wolf" (MTV)
"The Walking Dead" (AMC)
I already announced my choice in this category last month.
As for my vote, it goes to "The Walking Dead."  The entertainment professionals would vote for "American Horror Story," but they're not part of the Saturn Awards electorate.  I am.
Follow over the jump for my thoughts and choices on the acting nominees.

Best Actor on a Television Series:

Jon Bernthal "Marvel’s The Punisher" (Netflix)
Bruce Campbell "Ash vs. Evil Dead" (Starz)
Sam Heughan "Outlander" (Starz)
Jason Isaacs "Star Trek: Discovery" (CBS All Access)
Andrew Lincoln "The Walking Dead" (AMC)
Seth MacFarlane "The Orville" (Fox Television)
Kyle MacLachlan "Twin Peaks: The Return" (Showtime)
Ricky Whittle "American Gods" (Starz)
Kyle MacLachlan would be the entertainment insiders' choice, but I'm voting for Andrew Lincoln again.  His closest competition would be either Bruce Campbell, who won two years ago, or Sam Heughan, who has the support of an organized "Outlander" fandom.

Best Actress on a Television Series:

Gillian Anderson "The X-Files" (Fox Television)
Caitriona Balfe "Outlander" (Starz)
Melissa Benoist "Supergirl" (The CW)
Lena Headey "Game of Thrones" (HBO)
Sonequa Martin-Green "Star Trek: Discovery" (CBS All Access)
Adrianne Palicki "The Orville" (Fox Television)
Sarah Paulson "American Horror Story: Cult" (FX)
Mary Elizabeth Winstead "Fargo"(FX)
I was considering voting for Caitriona Balfe last year, but didn't.  This year, I plan on it.  Better her than lastyear's winner Melissa Benoist.  Of course, either Sarah Paulson or Mary Elizabeth Winstead could pull an upset.

Best Supporting Actor on a Television Series:

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau "Game of Thrones" (HBO)
Miguel Ferrer "Twin Peaks: The Return" (Showtime)
Kit Harington "Game of Thrones" (HBO)
Doug Jones "Star Trek: Discovery" (CBS All Access)
Christian Kane "The Librarians" (TNT)
Michael McKean "Better Call Saul" (AMC)
Khary Payton "The Walking Dead"(AMC)
Evan Peters "American Horror Story: Cult" (FX)
Michael McKean is probably the entertainment professionals' choice followed by Evan Peters, but I'm voting for Khary Payton.  "And yet I smile!"

Best Supporting Actress on a Television Series:

Odette Annable "Supergirl" (The CW)
Dakota Fanning "The Alienist" (TNT)
Danai Gurira "The Walking Dead" (AMC)
Melissa McBride "The Walking Dead" (AMC)
Candice Patton "The Flash" (The CW)
Adina Porter "American Horror Story: Cult" (FX)
Krysten Ritter "Marvel’s The Defenders" (Netflix)
Rhea Seehorn "Better Call Saul" (AMC)
Danai Gurira is the only performer nominated for both movie and television roles, as I mentioned in 'Black Panther' vs. 'Wonder Woman' at the Saturn Awards for a late Free Comic Book Daybut she's my second choice.  I plan on voting for Dakota Fanning.  I hope one or the other beats Candice Patton, last year's winner.

Best Performance by a Younger Actor on a Television Series:

KJ Apa "Riverdale" (The CW)
Milly Bobby Brown [sic] "Stranger Things" (Netflix)
Max Charles "The Strain" (FX)
Alycia Debnam-Carey "Fear the Walking Dead" (AMC)
David Mazouz "Gotham" (Fox)
Lili Reinhart "Riverdale" (The CW)
Chandler Riggs "The Walking Dead" (AMC)
Cole Spouse "Riverdale" (The CW)
I voted for Millie Bobby Brown last year and I'm voting for her again.  Here's to hoping she can overcome a farewell vote for Chandler Riggs and the "Riverdale" fans don't settle on a single nominee.

Best Guest-Starring Performance on Television:

Bryan Cranston "Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams" (Amazon / Sony Television)
Michael Greyeyes "Fear the Walking Dead" (AMC)
David Lynch "Twin Peaks: The Return" (Showtime)
Jeffrey Dean Morgan "The Walking Dead" (AMC)
Rachel Nichols "The Librarians" (TNT)
Jesse Plemons "Black Mirror" (Netflix)
Hartley Sawyer "The Flash" (The CW)
Michelle Yeoh "Star Trek: Discovery" (CBS All Access)
I'm sure Jeffrey Dean Morgan will win for his role as Negan again.  I voted for him last year because he was a guest star according to The Television Academy, performing in less than one-half of one of the seasons under consideration.  This year, he's not; he's really a supporting actor, so I'm not voting for him this year.  While the entertainment professional vote would probably go to Bryan Cranston, I'm voting for Michelle Yeoh, who is much more of a guest actress than Morgan.

I conclude this portion of the entry with an updated version of the pitch I make for my readers to become members: "Click here to apply for an affiliate membership.  At $25, one can vote for the best films and television shows.  At $40, one can vote for all categories.  I've already paid my $40.  I hope my readers do, too."

Now for the retrospective about posts with the Saturn Awards as their subjects.   While I posted an entire series of them, only one, "The Walking Dead" leads 2017 Saturn Awards television winners from July 3, 2017, made the cut for the end of blogging year retrospective.  It was the most shared and commented on Google+ for the blogging year with a total of eight.  It will also be the last to earn this status, as Google+ stopped tracking that statistic shortly afterwards.  It ended the blogging year with 2719 raw page views, which placed it 30th overall and 26th among entries actually posted during the seventh year of the blog.  It was also the second most read entry overall for July 2017 and the most read entry actually posted during that month with 2489 default and 2583 raw page views during July 2017.  I shared it to the science fiction, fantasy, horror, "Walking Dead," "Westworld," "Stranger Things," and "Outlander" groups and communities on Facebook and Google+; this entry earned 2242 default views in the first 24 hours afterwards.  It was the most read entry not shared at the Join the Coffee Party Movement Facebook page.  Behold the power of fandom!

I'll continue with the Saturn Awards entries tomorrow with a post about the Best New Media Series nominees.  "Star Trek: Discovery" vs. "Stranger Things," anyone?  As for the retrospectives, I plan on posting one about political reform on the 29th.  Stay tuned.

  1. fandango - I used to like this and watched all episodes until season 7, every new season characters seemed to become dumber and dumber with each episode. plot being constantly recycled - killed 1 bad guy, only to be replaced with another bad guy. their resources seem to be endless - whos making all the gas/ammo/food all the time? what about the virus that creates zombies? everything seems to be forced in this show and just made to randomly fill in blank pages with some nonsense for next episode and to milk as much money as possible from a clearly dying series.

    1. While you customized your remarks, I won't. "Despite your comment being used as spam for pirated movies, which I'd normally delete on sight, it's pertinent and insightful enough that I'm keeping it. May I not regret my decision."
