Joe Walsh walks away from the Republican primary and says he'll support the Democratic nominee

The Hungry for Power Games have claimed another tribute.  Watch Joe Walsh make his announcement on CNN in GOP challenger to Trump ends bid for presidency.

Republican presidential candidate Joe Walsh announced he is dropping out of the 2020 presidential race, telling CNN's John Berman that President Trump is a "dictator" and saying he plans to speak with other Republicans to get them to support the Democratic presidential candidate.

Unlike Mark Sanford, who probably will vote for Trump in November, Walsh will support the Democratic candidate, whoever he or she is.  I take that as a sign of his seriousness in getting Trump out of the White House.  I appreciate that, although it will likely make him person non grata among Republicans for the foreseeable future.  Now it's up to William Weld to serve as the internal opposition to Trump within the Republican Party.  I wish Weld luck, but I don't know if he'll even get enough delegates to earn a speaking spot at the Republican National Convention — this is, if the party bothers to follow their own rules.  I'm not optimistic about that, either.

Now it's time for me to be a good environmentalist and recycle: "While I never got around to suggesting any drink recipes or making memes showing his ideological position, I'll make do with what I already had on hand.  Follow over the jump."

Candy corn pizza for Candy Corn Day

Happy National Candy Corn Day!

National Candy Corn Day is observed annually on October 30th.

Candy Corn was created by George Renninger of Wunderle Candy Company in the late 1800s. He created this sweet treat to represent the bright colors of corn kernels.   Originally, Candy Corn was yellow, orange and white, but it has become popular in other colors as well.

This confection was originally made by hand using corn syrup, sugar, water, marshmallows, fondant and carnauba wax (a wax made from the leaves of a palm tree), but it is now produced using machines.  The original ingredients are still used in the recipe.

The biggest candy corn trend going on this year is Candy Corn Pizza.  Based on the following two videos, I think it's something of a troll.  Just watch We Tried The Candy Corn Pizza Trend from BuzzFeed Video to see why I think so.

Based on a viral tweet, we decided to taste test the candy corn pizza (literally a pizza topped with candy corn and then cooked).

"Candy Corn Pizza -- it's not as bad as you think" sums up the positive reactions by the candy corn lovers.  At least it didn't make them hate candy corn.

I don't know if the same can be said about the celebrities in Giada, Al Roker And Curtis Stone Try Candy Corn Pizza So You Don't Have To from The Today Show.

Celebrity chefs and our very own Al Roker taste test a pizza with candy corn melted on top – and their reactions are hilarious.

Giada and Al said worse things about it than the candy corn haters BuzzFeed rounded up and Curtis Stone wasn't far behind.

A week of sharks, hurricanes, and geeks

I acknowledged the news I was ignoring and promised to catch up with it in I know, let's blame the aliens!

There's lots to blog about from the past 24 hours, but I'm not quite up to writing about any of it just yet.  I took my biodiversity students out to do an ecology lab in the outdoors (until last week, I had no idea there were 70+ acres of beech-maple forest only a mile and a half from where I teach), and all that walking around in the fresh air tired me out.  So, instead of writing about the Detroit mayoral primary elections, the kickoff event of Dream Cruise, finding another climate change story, or writing about one of the three special programming weeks (Geek Week on YouTube, Hurricane Week on The Weather Channel, or Shark Week on Discovery Channel), I present the following pair of odd stories that aren't hot, but connect.

BuzzFeed shows how to act unsustainably

I gave some advice on what to do in The Sustainability Dozen: how to live more simply.  It's now BuzzFeed's turn to show what not to do in 14 Ways To Ruin the Environment in 61 Seconds.
