Drink to a drum corps 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July! I'm observing today as one of my trademark drum corps holidays, beginning with TJ's A Drum Corps 4th of July 2023.


Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights played "National Emblem March" and "Americans We." The corps in the preview image is the St. George Olympians from Springfield, Massachusetts.

One of the other corps in the montage is the Madison Scouts. TJ has a video of them, too, Madison Scouts 1976 @ Miscellaneous Corps SIngles Stars and Stripes Forever.


Two notes about this show. First, one of my high school marching band instructors was going to march with this corps, but decided against it. The corps never filled his spot. It's visible at 0:10 at the bottom of the U. After I marched in North Star, I told him, "You can point at the video and say that's your spot. I can point at the video and say 'that's me!'" Second, people who know the Flag Code and the rules DCI used in 1976 might wonder how the Scouts were able to march the American flag without an armed escort. That's not an official U.S. flag, at least, it wasn't when it was being used. First, that's a 48-star flag. Second, it's missing the red stripe along the bottom, so it only has 12 stripes. That same instructor pointed both of those out.

Skyy hasn't posted a regular-length video for 4th of July so far this year. Instead, he live-streamed 4th of July drinks for nearly 3 hours last night. I'm neither watching that nor sharing it with my readers. It's enough to make me use another creator for next year's celebration, should 4th of July be worth celebrating then.

Drink to Phantom Regiment playing Russian Easter Overture for a drum corps Easter weekend

An early hoppy Easter! I haven't celebrated Easter as a drum corps holiday since 2020, skipping both 2022 and 2024 in favor of highlights of the previous night's Saturday Night Live.* I also skipped posting Tipsy Bartender recipes in 2023 for SNL as well. I'm going to combine both today to make up for lost time, beginning with Drum Corps International's Phantom Regiment Performs Rimsky-Korsakov's Russian Easter Overture.

Phantom Regiment opens their 1980 production with Rimsky-Korsakov's "Russian Easter Overture." The corps finished in 5th place at the DCI World Championship Finals in Birmingham, Alabama.

I was in the audience for this performance, so imagine you can hear me cheer. For all I know, you can.

'Banshee: Ireland's Screaming Harbinger of Death' from PBS Storied for St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I'm returning to Monstrum on PBS Storied for Dr. Emily Zarka's take on a creature from Irish cultures, Banshee: Ireland's Screaming Harbinger of Death.

You might not think a crying, screaming ghost is a good thing, but you’d be wrong. The Irish banshee does predict death, but she also serves as a cathartic symbol and has a long history going all the way back to the 8th century. Dr. Zarka shows how this wailing female ghost connects to the very real Irish tradition of keening— a rhythmic wailing and mourning performed by women as part of the death ritual. Tune in to see how fact and fiction combine to create a supernatural tradition that connects the people of Ireland to their ancestors.

I know, I should stick to something more positive for St. Patrick's Day and save this for Halloween, but I consider myself Irish-American and think all of us should consider the scary with the silly about the cultures of our ancestors. Besides, as Dr. Z explained despite her using a scene from Supernatural, banshees aren't as negative as commonly depicted.

Did the Chiefs already win?
The NFL saying it produces "a single entertainment product" alone qualifies this subject for the Sunday entertainment feature, even though that argument didn't convince the Supreme Court that the NFL was not subject to antitrust law. Hey, I've been treating sports as entertainment on this blog since its first year. That written, I learned a lot of new facts about law, business, and sports, which makes today a good day.

'Could Puerto Rico Become the 51st State of the U.S.?' and chupacabras for Piña Colada Day

Happy Piña Colada Day when I update the prospects for Puerto Rican statehood! I begin with EWTN, the Global Catholic Network, asking Could Puerto Rico Become the 51st State of the U.S.?

There is a renewed effort by Puerto Rican officials and citizens to make the change from territory to US state, and they're turning to Congress to make it happen. It took 6 decades and many attempts before Congress passed a statehood bill and admitted New Mexico to the union in 1912 as the 47th state. New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich, says that is cause for optimism. Now, he's introduced a bill designed to settle Puerto Rico's status once and for all. Senator Heinrich says, "This process would allow voters in Puerto Rico to make an informed choice between statehood, and independence, and sovereignty and free association with the United States." Puerto Rico became a US territory after the 1898 Spanish-American war, and in 1917 the island's residents were granted US citizenship. Most Senate Republicans say it's simply a ploy by Democrats to increase their voting power. Governor Pedro Pierluisi of Puerto Rico says, "To think that a congressional delegation from Puerto Rico would be totally Democratic is not what I expect to happen. I'm a Democrat, I'm a proud Democrat, yet I tell you that in all likelihood it would be a split delegation." He added that the majority of people are Catholic and pro-life. Capitol Hill Correspondent, Erik Rosales reports.

The Puerto Rico Status Act passed in the House two years ago, but never got a vote in the Senate. It was reintroduced in the House last year, but went nowhere. At least it has been reintroduced in the Senate. Because of the filibuster and Republican opposition, it probably won't go anywhere in the Senate, either. Sigh, it's enough to drive one to change the subject and drink. Fortunately, I have exactly the subject to change to, which I foreshadowed in La Llorona and Malinche, two connected tales for Day of the Dead.

Monstrum also has a video about chupacabras, but those are originally Puerto Rican monsters, even though reports of them come from Mexico as well and the Mexican version is different. I'll save that for a future Piña Colada Day.

Without any further ado, I'm sharing El Chupacabras, a Modern Mystery from Monstrum on PBS Storied.

Did you know there are two different types of chupacabras? Or that these bloodsucking monsters only starting popping up 25 years ago? Sightings of el chupacabras, the “goatsucker,” began in Puerto Rico in 1994 for a very real reason—the unexplained deaths of many farm animals.

Dr. Zarka looks at why humans are afraid of a creature that doesn’t real[ly] prey on humans, and traces the journey of the chupacabras from island monster to popular folk legend.

It turns out that the story of the chupacabra isn't such a change of subject after all, as it ties into Puerto Rico's territorial status and its effects on the island's people.

Dr. Zarka mentioned a chupacabra cocktail and today celebrates Puerto Rico's national drink, so follow over the jump for videos showing both.

Drink to the 4th of July with Defunctland on Disney's America and 'The Stars and Stripes Forever'

Happy 4th of July! I'm reaching back to 2020 to follow through on a postponed idea for today's celebration of the second of three patriotic holidays in July I observe on this blog.

For today's celebration, I'm returning to the concept behind Drink to America Sings for July 4th, by examining a patriotic attraction that Disney planned for but never opened, Abandoned - Disney's America by Bright Sun Films.*

*Defunctland has a video on this topic that was my original choice for this post, but I watched this and decided to save Kevin Perjurer's documentary for next year. I'm an environmentalist, so I don't just recycle, I conserve my resources.

Four years later, I'm finally sharing Defunctland: The War for Disney's America.

Defunctland goes to Virginia to explore the history of the Disney park that never was, Disney's America.

I'm recycling my reaction from 2020 as well.

Not only did this proposed park get in trouble because its neighbors had a severe case of Not In My Back Yard (NIMBY), but because Disney's sanitized view of history had fallen out of fashion and rubbed historians the wrong way, leading to activism on the part of both groups. Imagine how poorly that perspective would fare today with Confederate monuments being removed[,] Juneteenth becoming popular[,] and people examining the Tulsa Massacre. Then again, maybe not, as Disney is retheming Splash Mountain...

Four years later, Splash Mountain has transformed into Tiana's Bayou Adventure, which is now open in Walt Disney World and will open soon in Disneyland. I will revisit the attraction in a future Sunday entertainment feature. For now, I'm sharing some patriotic music from the United States Marine Band, SOUSA - The Stars and Stripes Forever - "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band.

Happy 4th of July! For today's celebration of the second of three patriotic holidays in July I observe on this blog, I'm continuing what I did last year with March Or Die TV's DCI-1992 Star of Indiana-American Variations reaction.

In honor of 4th of July I thought this would be a great show to share with all of you. This show is a tribute to America and what 4th of July is all about. This one of my favorite shows and I am glad I get to share this with all of you.

Merry Christmas with songs from Broken Peach and a drink from Tipsy Bartender! I begin with this year's holiday selection, Broken Peach - It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas (Christmas Special).

"It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas" is a Christmas song written in 1951 by Meredith Willson. The song was originally titled "It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas". The song has been recorded by many artists, but was a hit for Perry Como and The Fontane Sisters with Mitchell Ayres & His Orchestra on September 18, 1951. Bing Crosby recorded a version on October 1, 1951, which was also widely played.

This video was recorded in Pazo di Libunca, in Narón, Galicia (Spain).

Like last year's video, this is a new addition to the band's Christmas repertoire. So would have been the song teased in Broken Peach - Noche de Paz (A Christmas Story).

'SNL' shares scary news for Halloween 2022

Happy Halloween! I closed David Pumpkins returns as 'Saturday Night Live' celebrates Halloween 2022 by telling my readers "stay tuned for part two, which has Halloween content in the middle of all the politics and current events, tomorrow. Trick or treat!" I open, like the show did, with PBS NewsHour-Republican Momentum Cold Open - SNL.

PBS NewsHour host Judy Woodruff (Heidi Gardner) interviews Republican candidates Herschel Walker (Kenan Thompson), Dr. Oz (Mikey Day) and Kari Lake (Cecily Strong) as their numbers continue to surge in the polls.

As I wrote yesterday, "I'm glad to see Cecily Strong return this season. I have another video featuring her that I'm saving for tomorrow." This is that video, where she nails another politician. She also nails Arizona, "the Florida of the West." Now I hope my daughter votes against her and for Katie Hobbs next week.

Not only is the 2022 election scary, so is 2024, as satirized in Horror Movie Trailer - SNL.

A horrifying movie trailer depicts the scariest outcomes for the 2024 election.

Re-nominating Joe Biden might be scary, but all the other potential candidates mentioned were even scarier, so back to Biden we go. I'm OK with that.

Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week's biggest news, like John Fetterman and Dr. Oz facing off in a senate debate.

'SNL' shares Easter wishes in its cold open included a Weekend Update clip about Elon Musk buying Twitter, but I haven't said anything about since because I wasn't sure it would happen and I wanted to see how would work out if it did. It has and so far I'm not positively impressed. I'm not surprised about that, either.

Last night's "Saturday Night Live" had enough content for two posts, a fun holiday celebration today and a more serious but still funny look at the 2022 election, Elon Musk buying Twitter, and other current issues tomorrow. I continue going full spooky season with David Pumpkins Returns - SNL.

A terrifying prison tour ride tries to spook its riders (Jack Harlow, Ego Nwodim, Andrew Dismukes) with an original character, David S. Pumpkins (Tom Hanks).

HAHAHAHA! That was hilarious and worth the revival.

'Grizzy & the Lemmings' explain social distancing and masking for a late Norther

Yesterday was the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Winter Solstice, so it was Norther, a fake holiday created by John Michael Greer the Archdruid and kept alive by me. Greer decreed the lemming the animal mascot for the holiday, which I've run with. I'm going to continue that today with some bonus pandemic content from "Grizzy & the Lemmings," Even Grizzy & the Lemmings social distance and apply protective measures.

Grizzy & the Lemmings are also applying social distancing and protective measures against COVID-19!

Ha, ha! That's one way to make protective measures funny. Also, I think I've found a source of videos for Norther from now on. Since there are currently 172 other videos on this channel, I will never run out as long as the channel is up.

Merry Christmas with songs from Broken Peach and a drink from Tipsy Bartender! I begin with this year's holiday selection, Broken Peach - Let It Snow (Christmas Special).

"Let It Snow"...is a song written by lyricist Sammy Cahn and composer Jule Styne in July 1945. It was written in Hollywood, California during a heat wave as Cahn and Styne imagined cooler conditions. Despite the lyrics making no mention of any holiday, the song has come to be regarded as a Christmas song worldwide due to its winter theme, being played on radio stations during the Christmas and holiday season, and having often been covered by various artists on Christmas-themed albums.

This is a new song for the band from Vigo, Galicia, Spain. I'm also glad to see them return to wearing seasonal outfits for the holiday like they do for Halloween.

Broken Peach released six of the seven songs as individual videos earlier this year and I was tempted to embed all of them. I'm happier to just embed this one video instead.

Season's Greetings from NASA for Christmas Eve and history and recipe for National Eggnog Day

A merry Christmas Eve and National Eggnog Day to my readers! I begin today's double celebration by reviving my old tradition of sharing Season's Greetings from NASA, which I last observed in 2016, with this year's version of Season’s Greetings from NASA.

From the Moon to Mars to the solar system and beyond, season's greetings from all of us at NASA!

Not only does the video serve as a moving Christmas card, but also as a fun promotion of NASA's missions in space but also inside the Earth's atmosphere. After all, the first A in NASA stands for aeronautics.

University of Michigan and Michigan State combined marching bands put on a Halloween halftime show

For the final Halloween post of 2021, I'm embedding the MSU Spartan Marching Band link and video because it has better audio and preview image, but using MLive's title and description: Michigan-Michigan State marching band Halloween halftime show.

The marching bands from Michigan and Michigan State teamed up for a Halloween-themed show during halftime of the football game between the schools on October 30, 2021 at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

As the final set says, "Happy Halloween!"

History of Labor Day plus drinks and marching bands to celebrate the holiday

Happy Labor Day! I'm returning to my pre-pandemic themes of history and drinks for the holiday with some bonus marching band. I begin with history from CBS Mornings Labor day recognizes fight for fair wages, hours from 2014.

Millions of Americans are enjoying the day off work and school, but some may have lost the significance of the national holiday. Kenneth C. Davis, author of "Don't Know Much About History," joins the "CBS This Morning" co-hosts to talk about Labor Day.

Let us not forget that Labor Day is not only a celebration of the end of summer and beginning of fall, but one of work, working people, and their struggle for better working conditions and the ability to enjoy their lives. Workers are still pursuing the latter today, but in a more individualistic fashion through the Great Resignation, a subject I might return to in a future post.
