Local news coverage of marching bands in the 2023 Macy's Parade for Thanksgiving

An early happy Thanksgiving to my readers! I begin my celebration of the long holiday weekend, which extends until Giving Tuesday with this year's version of Local news coverage of marching bands in the 2021 Macy's Parade for Thanksgiving, one of the most popular posts the past two years.*

Since a Michigan band is in tomorrow's parade, I'm opening with Jenison Marching Band heading to NYC with community support from WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids.

On Sunday, the Jenison High School Marching Band will be headed off to New York City for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
WOOD-TV found another human interest angle to the trip in A challenge times three: Triplets ready to march at Macy’s with Jenison Band.

While all of the families with children in the Jenison High School marching band have been busy fundraising for the last year and a half and preparing for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, that effort has been multiplied by three for the Milnamows.
My two sisters and I all marched in band my senior year of high school, so I can relate to that part of their experience, but we were one year apart, so I don't have an insight into being one of triplets unless being one of a set of "Irish triplets" counts. Yeah, I know that's considered offensive, but I have Irish ancestry, so I can say this about myself and my family. That written, good luck to the Milnamows and all the rest of the Jenison High School Marching Band in tomorrow's parade. Michigan represent!

Follow over the jump for more local news coverage, including from two university publicity departments, of the marching bands in tomorrow's parade.

I resume with WHNT News 19 reporting Alabama A&M Marching Band to Lead the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the world’s biggest stages for high school and collegiate bands across the country to march to the beat of their own drums. The Alabama A&M Marching Maroon and White will make history as the first HBCU band to lead the festivities in the Big Apple.
Not only is the Alabama A&M Marching Maroon and White the first band alphabetically, they're the first band in the parade. That's an honor!

Speaking of honors, WTHR in Indianapolis reported Fishers High School Band will be featured as the 'Santa Band' at Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

The band will perform just ahead of the appearance of Santa Claus in the parade.
Congratulations! Fisher may be second alphabetically, but they get to be part of the big finale.

WTHR showed the band rehearsing in Fishers Marching Tiger Band getting ready to march in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

This is the Marching Tigers' first time in the parade. The students raised about $120K to pay for the trip. They have been getting ready since June!
Look at the peppermint pattern on the flags! No wonder they're the "Santa Band!"

The third band alphabetically also earned an honor when WISN 12 News featured them as Person of the Week: Greendale High School marching band.

The Greendale High School marching band is performing in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
This is on top of Greendale being the Wisconsin Class AA Marching Band champions, joining Jenison as being the best band in their class in their state. Congratulations!

I didn't retrieve a video about the Macy's Great American Marching Band as a whole, but I did find MHS student selected to perform in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from WBOY 12 News about one of its members.

Morgantown High School Sophomore Maddie Carver has been selected to participate in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade this year.
Congratulations, Maddie!

I'm continuing with CBS Miami reporting MSD marching band to play at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School Marching Band, known as the "Eagle Regiment" has been invited to perform at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.
Yes, this is the same high school that suffered a school shooting on Valentines Day 2018, which prompted me to post Instructions on how to deal with an active shooter and resulted in March For Our Lives. This is a much more positive story, the mirror image to Not the way I wanted the state marching band championship to make the news from 2012.

With Fox 13 Seattle's Mercer Island HS marching band to play in Macy's Parade, I am now closer to the end of the alphabet than the beginning.

The Mercer Island High School marching band will be performing at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and they're giving Good Day Seattle a preview.
If nothing else, that was an enthusiastic performance by both the band and the location reporter. Here's to the students having that much energy tomorrow. Based on their show at Bandfest before the 2019 Rose Parade, I'm sure they will.

Continuing on, KSDK News reported St. Louis-area marching band will perform in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The O'Fallon Township High School Marching Panthers will be one of nine marching bands in the parade. It was one of five high school bands to make the cut.
Listening to the anchors complain about New York's cold weather on Thanksgiving made me glad I went to the Rose Parade as a kid.

Now for the second university band, Rutgers Marching Band readies for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from Rutgers University.

The Marching Scarlet Knights will be representing Rutgers and the State of New Jersey in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this year in New York.
I think this is the best-done video of the bunch and reminds me that I haven't featured a Rutgers University video of its marching band since Marching band moments nearly nine years ago. It's been too long.

On the other hand, I found Texas Tech In NYC | Day 1 disappointing.

The Texas Tech University Goin' Band and other select representatives arrived in New York City on Monday, Nov. 20, for the 2023 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The day was capped by a visit to Radio City Music Hall to watch the world famous Rockettes.
I didn't want to just see the band members playing tourist in New York City. I wanted so see them rehearse and perform. All the more reason to watch them tomorrow.

I'm saving the band that generated the most news coverage for last, The Band Directors Marching Band. Here's my favorite, Identical twin band directors gear up for Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade from WFSB 3.

“We were the first - and maybe the only - twin drum majors at the University of Connecticut.”
A friend of mine from my drum corps days marches in this band. He also marched in the 2022 Rose Parade. He's having quite the two years!

With that, I've covered all of the bands performing tomorrow. Enjoy the parade and stay tuned for another Thanksgiving post tomorrow!
