'Saturday Night Live' fools around with Trump's indictment

Last night's "Saturday Night Live" opened with an April Fools joke about The Former Guy being indicted, Trump Indictment Cold Open - SNL.

Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) promotes his new album.
This skit was as much about making fun of the January 6 Choir as the indictment itself; the music is much more transparent than the indictment, which hasn't been unsealed yet. We'll probably find out Tuesday, when TFG surrenders voluntarily. I'll leave it to any of my readers who are law enforcement or lawyers whether that counts as an arrest.

SNL continued with the subject as well as the April Fools pranks in Weekend Update: Donald Trump Indicted - SNL.

Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week's biggest news, like President Biden calling for an assault weapons ban.
TFG's legal troubles, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Ron DeSantis all got the attention they deserved, but the biggest reaction was to the April Fools prank Michael Che played on Colin Jost. It helped make for a fast five minutes.

Weekend Update moved on to lighter news in Cup Noodles' Breakfast Flavor, 89-Year-Old Named Oldest Surfer - SNL.

Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week's biggest news, like a sperm donor being sued for increasing the risk of accidental incest.
I think Colin should pay less attention to Punxsutawney Phil and pay more attention to his local groundhog, Staten Island Chuck, who predicted an early spring. That prediction came closer to the truth for New York City.

Weekend Update moved on to a story at the intersection of education and art in the news as Michelangelo's David Defends Art - SNL.

Michelangelo's David (Michael Longfellow) stops by Weekend Update to address the recent controversy surrounding an image of him being included in a school curriculum.
I remember the days of "banned in Boston." Now it's "banned in Florida."

I'm concluding the highlights of last night's episode with Quinta Brunson Monologue - SNL, which continues the theme of education.

First-time host Quinta Brunson talks about working on Abbott Elementary and how poorly teachers are treated in the United States.
I agree, pay teachers more.

Follow over the jump for a retrospective of the top posts showcasing videos from SNL.

Three of the top four posts according to the default counter during the 2022-2023 blogging year all featured clips from "Saturday Night Live." Here they are and more.

Just under two weeks after I shared 'SNL' satirizes 'Fox & Friends' in its Supreme Court cold open from April 3, 2022 at the Coffee Party Facebook page, it continued gaining page views until it passed John Oliver on feelings over facts and Colbert on Trumpiness at 5:00 P.M. on April 16, 2022, to reach the all time top twenty, although both were in a statistical tie at the same number of default page views with ~6,060. It lost default page views by the next morning, falling to ~6,050 and dropping out of the default top twenty before 7:30 A.M. on Easter. It gained them back and increased its default page view count to ~6,070, reentering the default top twenty by 8:00 P.M. Easter night, knocking John Oliver on feelings over facts and Colbert on Trumpiness out again. Sic transit gloria mundi. It also passed Vox and ProPublica rickroll America's old voting machines in raw page views overnight between April 23, 2022 and April 24, 2022 to reach twenty-sixth all time according to raw page views. This was only the second post to make the default page view top twenty during 2022 and the first and only during the 2022-2023 blogging year. It ended April 2022 with ~6,180 default and 6,282 raw page views. It moved into a statistical tie with Ten years ago, we were partying like it was 1929. Are we about to do it again? from September 15, 2018 at ~6,300 raw page views to tie for twenty-fifth on May 13, 2022. It passed it to claim twenty-fifth by raw page views outright by December 31, 2022, when it had accumulated ~6,280 default and 6,326 raw page views. The entry ended the blogging year with ~6,280 default and 6,348 raw page views to be the single most read entry of the twelfth year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News.

The second most read entry during the 2022-2023 blogging year was 'Saturday Night Live' mocks Alito's leaked Supreme Court opinion to open its Mother's Day episode from May 8, 2022, which had ~3,460 default and 3,531 raw page views as of 11:59 P.M. on March 20, 2023. It earned the bulk of its page views when I shared the link at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page, becoming the most read post during May 2022 with ~3,320 default and 3,479 raw page views. It was also the third most read post of calendar year 2022 with ~3,460 default and 3,517 raw page views.

Like all the rest of the entries featuring "Saturday Night Live," I shared 'SNL' parodies prepping Herschel Walker for Tuesday's Senate runoff in its cold open from December 4, 2022 at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page. That resulted in the entry earning ~2,290 default and 2,524 raw page views for both December 2022 and calendar year 2022, ranking it first for the month and seventh among entries posted during 2022. Blogger credited it with even more default page views by March 20, 2023 with ~2,520 even though its raw page views only increased to 2,549, ranking the post fourth according to the former measure and fifth according to the latter.

Sharing Weekend Update compares this week's headlines to 'Mad Max' on last night's 'SNL' from May 15, 2022 to the Coffee Party USA Facebook page yielded 982 default and 1,106 raw page views, resulting in it being the second most read entry during May 2022. While it fell out of the running 12-month top twenty by the end of the year, it continued gaining raw page views, reaching 1,269 by the end of calendar year 2022. A trickle came in during the first three months of 2023, with the entry earning 1,282 raw page views by March 20, 2023, ranking it eleventh among entries posted during the twelfth year of the blog and twentieth overall.

I shared 'SNL' lampoons 'Fox & Friends' reacting to the midterm election results from November 13, 2022 at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page, which helped it earn 939 default and 1,046 raw page views, making it the most read entry of November 2022. It continued earning page views during December 2022, resulting in the post having 941 default and 1,195 raw page views for the calendar year. It ended the 2022-2023 blogging year with ~1,030 default and 1,214 raw page views, ranking fourteenth by the former measure, sixteenth by raw page views among entries posted during the twelfth year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News and 25th overall.

Sharing SNL's 'Weekend Update' recaps the news from the first full week of December 2022 on December 11, 2022 at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page helped bring in 710 default and 833 raw page views during December 2022, ranking it fourth for the month. It continued to gain page views, ending the blogging year with 821 default and 1,041 raw page views, placing it twentieth by the former metric, 21st among entries posted during the blogging year by raw page views, and 30th overall. It has continued to attract readers since, as the image above shows.

The lowest ranking new entry by page views I'm featuring today is 'SNL' celebrates Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's confirmation in its cold open from April 10, 2022. Sharing it at the Coffee Party USA Facebook page yielded most of the 590 default and 781 raw page views during April 2022, when it ranked sixth by the former measure and fourth among entries posted during the month and fifth overall by the latter. The post ended the blogging year with 890 raw page views, ranking it 30th among entries I wrote during the blogging year and 39th overall.

'SNL' sends up Trump's visit to the train derailment site in Ohio in its cold open and Weekend Update was one of two pins from the current blogging year and February 2023 to be saved with one save.

In addition, I listed 'SNL' opens with holiday greetings from Fauci and others in PBS NewsHour describes 'The state of COVID in the U.S. three years into pandemic', 'SNL' shares Easter wishes in its cold open in PBS Eons and SciShow on Piltdown Man for April Fools Day, a Science Saturday holiday special and 'SNL' opens by spoofing the last January 6th Committee hearing in Colbert's studio audience gave a standing ovation when told about Trump's indictment; Kimmel's was just as loud. Read their stories there.

That's it for today's retrospective. I plan on returning to my regular programming tomorrow. Stay tuned.
