'Snow White' and 'War of the Worlds' tie for most Razzie nominations ahead of 'Star Trek: Section 31'

I promised an examination of the Golden Raspberry (Razzie®) Nominations twice, so I'm following through with The 46th Razzie® Nominations.

Thank you to our fearless Razzie® Voting Members who picked through a vast amount of solid sludge to extract these fine pearls of mediocrity! And giving a special callout to Travis Morrow!

Go to Razzies.com for the full list of nominees as they duke it out for the $4.97 Razzie Statuette!

HOLLYWOOD, WE NEED TO TALK!

Where is that safer, happier and more inspiring place - Disneyland? Well, even Disney bungled that!

46th Annual Golden Raspberry (Razzie®) Nominations

Among the 2026 titles competing for the $4.97 gold spray-painted Worst Picture Statuette are:

The $320 million production of a well-regarded graphic novel, that despite the highly touted talent involved, fell flat on originality, execution and heart - The Electric State

A vanity project that doesn't move fast enough towards the ending - Hurry Up Tomorrow

A slow-paced unnecessary re-imagining of a classic, filled with drawn-out musical numbers, dopey CGI dwarfs, and enough mediocrity to leave the audience in a very unhappy place - Disney's Snow White (2025)

A convoluted mess beaming its audience to a frontier that could finally bring this once inspiring franchised journey to a screeching halt - Star Trek: Section 31.

And if butchering an H.G. Wells classic by stringing together video chats, surveillance cams and FaceTime with panic attacks makes for a compelling film experience - please allow the robots to attack and get it over with! - War Of The Worlds (2025)

Today's year-end retrospective doubles as the final Sunday entertainment feature of 2025. I begin with Beyond The Trailer's Top Ten Best Movies of 2025.

'Joker: Folie a Deux' leads Razzies with seven nominations as the Golden Raspberry Awards' poor math skills strike again!

I concluded Retail Archaeology asks 'What Is Going On At Party City?' A tale of the Retail Apocalypsewith a preview of coming attractions: "In the meantime, stay tuned for this year's Razzie nominations. The Golden Raspberry Awards' poor math skills strike again!" Watch The 45th Razzie® Nominations.

In this new and uncharted world where bad is good, dumb is smart and criticism is absolutely forbidden, the Razzies® stand ready to rumble. Just don't ask us to kneel! Here are our top three categories' nominees for 2024. Visit razzies.com for the rest!!
Wow, even the Razzies have made a political statement with their gallows humor about the horse loose in the hospital again. I'm actually impressed.

On the other hand, their math skills and attention to detail still stink. The Razzies press release reports a five-way tie for most nominations among Borderlands, Joker: Folie a Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis, and Reagan at six nominations each. That's incorrect. Fortunately, 11 Alive in Atlanta checked the math and accurately reported 'Joker 2' leads Razzie nominations.

The sequel scored seven nominations, including Worst Picture.
Congratulations on getting it right. That's better than The Hollywood Reporter, which uncritically reproduced the numbers on the press release last year!

That written, Borderlands, Madame Web, Megalopolis, and Reagan actually are tied for second with six nominations each, followed by Unfrosted with four, which the press release reported. It skipped over Kraven the Hunter with three nominations and Argylle with two to list The Crow with two nominations. Sloppy, but I expect no better, which is why I know to check. That's four consecutive years I've found errors and omissions and a fifth going back to 2019.*

Enough of that. As I wrote the past two years, "I pay attention to the Razzies because they usually recognize the worst big-budget genre films and sniff out bad political films. They didn't disappoint me this year, as they recognized some poorly done genre films." None of the bad genre films surprised me, as I predicted last year, "'here's to hoping Madame Web doesn't earn at least one Razzie Award nomination next year and Johnson doesn't earn one as well for her role.' I'm afraid Madame Web will earn multiple Razzie nominations and might even win some of them. I just hope Sweeney escapes being nominated." Madame Web earned six, including Worst Actress for Dakota Johnson. At least Sydney Sweeney avoided a nomination.

Follow over the jump for more.

The top TV shows of 2024 from TIME, The Hollywood Reporter, and WatchMojo

I concluded '2024 becomes the world's hottest year on record, fueling extreme weather events,' the year in climate and weather with the following maybe.
It's early enough that I might post an entry about the year's best TV shows today. Stay tuned to see if I do, followed by the overall year in review for New Year's Eve.
O.K., I'm doing it. Since Grace Randolph hasn't made a definitive best streaming series of the year video yet — watch, she'll upload one while I'm writing this or, worse yet, after I post it — I'm beginning with The 10 Best TV Shows of 2024 from TIME.

One of the greatest pleasures of the Peak TV era was that an excellent series could come from almost anywhere. Lifetime could greenlight the smart, satirical thriller You (which would become a hit for Netflix after failing to attract an audience on cable). The lyrical coming-of-age saga David Makes Man could find a home on OWN. TNT could serve up madcap Floridian crime soap Claws while BBC America made Killing Eve an obsession on this side of the Atlantic.

A few years into the industry’s contraction, and in the wake of writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023, the television landscape looks a lot different.
Since TIME didn't even hint at this year's best TV shows in the video description, I'm listing them here:

1. Shogun
2. Industry
3. Say Nothing
4. Penelope
5. Fantasmas
6. Somebody Somewhere
7. Interview with the Vampire
8. The Sympathizer
9. Baby Reindeer
10. Pachinko

Not a bad list, although I hadn't heard of 3-5, Say Nothing, Penelope, and Fantasmas, before. Like TIME's top ten movies, this list reflects "reflects expert critical taste," which means it includes some obscure choices.

Next, THR Critics Pick the Best TV Shows of 2024 | THR News, which The Hollywood Reporter just uploaded this morning.

From an epic historical drama to a wild surrealist comedy, our TV screens took us on all sorts of thrilling and intriguing adventures in 2024. As we head into 2025, we're taking a look at some of The Hollywood Reporter's television critics' picks for the best TV shows of 2024.
"In no particular order," THR's picks are Shogun, Baby Reindeer, Ripley, Fantasmas, Shrinking, Hacks, Somebody Somewhere, and My Brilliant Friend. I'm much more familiar with the series on THR's list, which indicates their critics are more in tune with popular taste than TIME's.

Speaking of popular taste, I can't resist WatchMojo, which I've called "high-quality, well-researched clickbait," so I conclude with their Top 24 Best TV Shows of 2024.

From gripping dramas to hilarious comedies, 2024 was a stellar year for television. Join us as we count down the most captivating and innovative series that kept us glued to our screens. Whether you're into sci-fi, crime thrillers, or heartwarming stories, there's something for everyone on this list! Our countdown includes shows like "Industry," "Hazbin Hotel," "Dead Boy Detectives," "Heartstopper," "Ripley," and many more. We'll explore why these series stood out and what made them the best of 2024. Which show was your favorite? Let us know in the comments!
I knew a lot more of WatchMojo's list and even the one I didn't, Bad Monkey, looks like one I should know. In addition, TIME's and THR's choices Industry, Ripley, and The Sympathizer made WatchMojo's list below tenth. Speaking of which, here's WatchMojo's top ten.

1. Shogun
2. X-Men '97
3. Fallout
4. Arcane
5. The Penguin
6. Hacks
7. The Boys
8. Baby Reindeer
9. English Teacher
10. Agatha All Along

Looks like everyone agrees on Shogun and Baby Reindeer, making them favorites of both critics and the people. Who am I to disagree?

Stay tuned for a final year-end retrospectives through New Year's Eve.

Best and worst movies of 2024 from Beyond The Trailer, TIME, and WatchMojo

I finished 2024, another busy year in space, according to NASA, ESA, Reuters, and New Scientist by telling you, my readers, "Stay tuned for year-end retrospectives through New Year's Eve, continuing with the year in movies and TV for the Sunday entertainment feature." TV is too much for today, so I'm sticking to movies. I begin the final entertainment feature of the year with Grace Randolph of Beyond The Trailer's Top Ten Best Movies of 2024.

Top Ten Best Movies of 2024 today! Beyond The Trailer host Grace Randolph gives a review of her Top Ten Movies of 2024 including a breakdown as to why each one made the cut! Find out where Wicked, Deadpool & Wolverine, The Brutalist, Inside Out 2, Conclave, A Complete Unknown, Dune Part 2, Challengers, Nosferatu and Alien Romulus land on this list! And share your own Top Ten of 2024 now that you've seen some full movies and not just the trailers!
Here is Grace's top ten in one frame.

This is a good list, although I would have put Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Twisters in my top ten instead of Challengers and Alien: Romulus.

For a list that reflects expert critical taste, I'm sharing The 10 Best Movies of 2024 from TIME Magazine.

This has been a difficult year. You may have been buffeted by anger you didn’t want to feel, and didn’t know how to productively process. Breeding grounds for misinformation—and its even more treacherous sibling, disinformation—have proliferated. AI is coming, supposedly to make our lives easier, but in reality it may just be taking our jobs. Sometimes it has seemed that soullessness has become the order of the day—as if having a soul were simply too much bother.

But as of right now, at least, most movies are made by human beings, and they are still one of the most extraordinary ways for humans to talk to one another. The conversation may seem one-sided. After all, a filmmaker makes the movie, and then you buy the ticket or pay to stream it. But if you care about movies at all, then surely there have been times you’ve gone so deep into a film that you’ve almost taken up residence within it—or, rather, it has taken up residence within you. This is why filmmakers do what they do. Some are deeply invested in capturing the texture of life that surrounds them, so that viewers in California or Iowa or New York will have some sense, say, of what it’s like to be a woman making her way alone in a densely populated, noisy, complicated city like Mumbai. For a filmmaker, even just asking the question, “What do women want?” can yield rich, pleasurable rewards. Asking what women need is even more dangerous. Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof has risked his life to do so; you can’t put more faith in the art form than that.

Making a film is more of a crapshoot than ever, especially if you’re hoping your work will be watched in theaters, on the big screen, rather than at home on the small one. But sometimes watching movies small is a necessity: unless you live within driving distance of a good art-house theater, some of the best movies of 2024 might not have come to a cinema near you. The 10 titles I share with you here are movies that have helped me through this fraught and sometimes confounding year. I hope you’ll find your way to at least some of them—and perhaps one or two or more of them will find a home in you.
The only movie on both TIME's list and Grace's is A Complete Unknown, although she has covered Anora, Babydoll, Emilia Perez, and Flow; they just didn't make her top ten.

WatchMojo has more popular taste than TIME, and the channel's Top 10 Best Movies of 2024 reflects that.

Lights, camera, action! We're diving into the most spectacular cinematic experiences of 2024 that redefined storytelling on the big screen. From epic sci-fi to intimate character studies, these films pushed boundaries and captured our imaginations in ways we never expected. Our countdown features incredible movies like "Dune: Part Two," "Challengers," "The Wild Robot," and more, showcasing the incredible diversity and creativity of modern cinema! What do you think was the best movie of 2024? Let us know in the comments.
WatchMojo's top ten is similar to Grace's with the substitutions of Sing, Sing, which wouldn't have qualified because of its release date, Anora, the one movie also on TIME's list, The Wild Robot, and The Substance for Deadpool & Wolverine, Alien: Romulus, A Complete Unknown, and Inside Out 2. I think cases can be made for all of them.

Follow over the jump for two worst lists.

WatchMojo recounts 'The Heartbreaking Life of Freddie Mercury' for World AIDS Day

I promised "a special observance of World AIDS Day as the Sunday entertainment feature," and I'm following through with WatchMojo recounting The Heartbreaking Life of Freddie Mercury.

The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long. Come along as we take a closer look at the story of this legendary singer, musician and performer, including the many challenges and hardships he weathered before being taken too soon. Our video includes Freddie’s struggle to be taken seriously as an artist, his issues with substance abuse, his battle with AIDS, and more! What do YOU think is the most heartbreaking thing about Freddie Mercury’s life? Let us know in the comments!
I've called WatchMojo's videos "high-quality, well-researched clickbait that is worth sharing" and this video exceeded even that standard. I learned a lot about Mercury from this video, including his being born in Zanzibar and his having extra teeth in his mouth. As I'm fond of writing, "it's always a good day when I learn something new, which makes today a good day."

WatchMojo's Top 10 Facts You Never Knew About Freddie Mercury is more the channel's style.

He’s one of the all-time greats, but how much do you really know about this ‘80s musical icon? Did you know that Freddie Mercury wasn't his real name? Or that he actually had more teeth than most people? WatchMojo is counting down the things you never knew about Freddie Mercury.
I learned even more from this video, as light-hearted and trivial as it is. One of the facts was Mercury being David Bowie's roadie. While the Wikipedia entry for "Under Pressure" makes no mention of this connection, it makes for an irresistible transition to Under Pressure - Annie Lennox & David Bowie from Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992.

What chemistry!

That concludes today's tribute to an entertainer taken away too early by AIDS. Stay tuned for Cyber Monday followed by Giving Tuesday to complete the extra-long holiday weekend.

WatchMojo's 'Top 20 Stores That Don't Exist Anymore' for Throwback Thursday, tales of the Retail Apocalypse

Happy Throwback Thursday! I'm observing today by sharing WatchMojo's Top 20 Stores That Don't Exist Anymore.

These stores are staples of history, but they sadly don't exist anymore. For this list, we’ll be looking at retail outlets that were once the pinnacle of your shopping experience, and are now a faded memory. Our countdown includes Borders, Radio Shack, KB Toys, Sharper Image, and more! Have you ever shopped at one of these places? Let us know in the comments...
Readers who have been following my tales of the Retail Apocalypse should recognize a lot of the defunct chains mentioned in this video, which lives up to my description of the channel's product as "high-quality, well-researched clickbait that is worth sharing." I hope my readers enjoyed this trip back through memory lane as much as I did and learned something as well.

Follow over the jump for the top posts about the Retail Apocalypse during the twelfth year of Crazy Eddie's Motie News.

The best and worst movies at the box office for New Year's Eve 2022

For my final retrospective of 2022, I'm posting a bonus follow-up to Beyond The Trailer and WatchMojo look at the top movies and TV shows of 2022 instead of this year's version of WatchMojo rewound YouTube again, Google's Year in Search, and top memes for New Year's Eve.* Watch as Grace Randolph of Beyond The Trailer presents 2022 Box Office BREAKDOWN - Avatar 2, Top Gun Maverick, Marvel MCU, Warner Bros Discovery.

Top Ten 2022 Movies today! Beyond The Trailer's box office breakdown for 2022! Domestic and worldwide! Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, Universal!
...
Top Ten Movies 2022 today, at the box office! Beyond The Trailer host Grace Randolph's breakdown and review of 2022 movies at the box office, including Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, Universal, Sony and Paramount! Where Avatar The Way of Water, Top Gun Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther Wakanda Forever, Thor Love & Thunder, Black Adam and more stood on the domestic and worldwide top ten lists! Beyond The Trailer host Grace Randolph gives you an inside look at the weekend box office with an industry perspective! Be sure to make Beyond The Trailer your first stop for movie and entertainment news here on YouTube today!
I begin my reaction by recycling part of my response to The highest grossing speculative fiction films of 2018.
All but one of the top ten by domestic box office as of the end of last year are speculative fiction films of one sort or other except "Mission Impossible: Fallout." Even that one is a genre film (action), so it would be one I would vote on at this year's Saturn Awards.
All of this is true of this year's top ten, except that the action film is "Top Gun: Maverick," also a Tom Cruise movie. Hmm. Despite the pandemic, which has accelerated a lot of changes already in progress, Americans' taste in movies has remained the same.

Two of 2022's top ten at the box office also appear in Grace's Top Ten WORST Movies of 2022, which the preview image more properly calls the "Top Ten 2022 Career Killers."

Top Ten Worst Movies of 2022 today! Beyond The Trailer's top picks from Hollywood! After breakdown of trailers, how'd full movies rank? Box Office!
...
Top Ten Worst Movies of 2022 today! Beyond The Trailer host Grace Randolph gives a review of the WORST Movies of 2022 at the box office including a breakdown as to why each one made the cut! Find out where Don't Worry Darling, Thor Love & Thunder, Babylon, Strange World, Black Adam, Amsterdam, Lightyear, Morbius and Fantastic Beasts Secrets of Dumbledore land on this list! And share your own worst movies of 2022 now that you've seen some full movies and not just the trailers! Be sure to make Beyond The Trailer your first stop for movie and entertainment news here on YouTube today!
My wife and I watched four of these, "Don't Worry Darling," "Thor Love & Thunder," "Morbius," and "Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore." As Grace said, "Don't Worry Darling" was actually good if flawed. It delivered even more science fiction content than the retrofuturistic trailer and posters promised. The problem, as Grace pointed out, was in the paradoxically behind-the-scenes yet very public drama involving the cast and director. That poisoned the film. Too bad. I found "Thor Love & Thunder" fun but a little too silly. Conversely, "Morbius" took itself way too seriously. Its creators shot and acted it as a dramatic character study, not a comic book movie. That wasn't what the audience wanted, except to laugh at it. Finally, neither my wife nor I liked "Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore." My wife said it was cruel and I agree.

WatchMojo uploaded its own Top 10 Biggest Box Office Bombs of 2022. Watch to see which movies made its list and how it's different from Grace's.

Another year, another bunch of box office dumpster fires! For this list, we’ll be looking at 2022 films that got significant theatrical releases and failed to recoup their production budgets through box office alone. Our countdown includes "Amsterdam", "Bros", "Morbius" and more!
"The Northman" stands out on this list while not being on Grace's. It may have been a disappointment at the box office, but it apparently made its money on streaming. Also, it probably didn't ruin any careers, so it didn't meet that criterion.

By the way, I expect to see a lot of these movies nominated at the Razzies, especially "Morbius" and "Bros," the former because Jared Leto already has the Razzies electorate's attention and the latter because there is nothing unfunnier than a bad comedy.

Since it's New Year's Eve, I'm sharing a drink recipe from Common Man Cocktails, How To Make The Champagne Cocktail / New Years Eve (NYE).

We're going to show you how to make a proper Champagne Cocktail for New Years Eve this year, it's tasty, it's bubbly, it's gonna be a winner.
...
The champagne cocktail is a classic design with a bit of history, a bit of class and a bit of an easy build. You can make it in a variety of ways, with different garnishes like Wild Hibiscus flowers, different bitters like Angostura or citrus bitters, or with different champagnes (or the addition of brandy/cognac).
...
New Years just isn't right without a champagne cocktail so try the original "Champagne Cocktail" and see what you think.
The guys behind the bar are having a little too much fun, but that's appropriate for New Year's Eve. They made this the most fun Common Man Cocktails video I've ever watched.

That does it for 2022. Stay tuned for this year's version of My favorite bands in the 2022 Rose Parade for New Year's Day. May 2023 be better than 2022, although I'm not holding my breath. See you next year!

*WatchMojo didn't create its own rewind this year and YouTube said it will never create another rewind, so I just lost enthusiasm for the idea. Instead, I'm recycling an old concept for National Science Fiction Day a couple days early. I have something else planned for that day.

Vox, Time, and WatchMojo look back at 2022

It's nearing the end of the year, so it's time, pun intended, for me to post the 2022 version of Vox, TODAY, and ABC News look back at 2021. I begin, as I did last year, with Vox recapping 2022, in 7 minutes.

Running up that hill with 8 billion people.
...
In 2022, the world population crossed 8 billion people — and we felt the scale of this monumental milestone in hundreds of ways. After over two years of lockdowns and quarantines, people eagerly restarted their lives, but there were certainly growing pains. Weddings and travel skyrocketed, but so did lost luggage and global inflation rates. Taylor Swift broke Ticketmaster. Cryptocurrency was headed toward a great year until it really, really wasn’t. 2022 tested the world population as we tested out life in a new phase of the pandemic.

Russia invaded Ukraine, and aid relief flooded into the war-torn country. Refugees were welcomed into surrounding countries, and those who stayed behind inspired people around the world. Global protests cried out for justice in Iran. Football teams stood up for migrant workers and the LGBTQ+ community at the World Cup. Cuba legalized same-sex marriage. The world froze for a moment when England’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, died. And we all watched a lot of TikTok.

As we head into 2023, take a moment to look back at the events that defined this year.
The other year in review videos I watched did not even mention the human population passing 8 billion, yet Vox made it the first and organizing story. This is yet another reason I subscribe to Vox on YouTube and why it's one of my favorite sources for news and analysis.

Time Magazine had a more conventional take in 2022: A Year In Review.

Following years of uncertainty—and a global pandemic that has proven to be one of the most challenging events in history—we forged on, prepared to tackle what lay ahead. And as we continued to extract the possible from the impossible, this year taught us, above all, that our voices—no matter how big or small—can change the world.
That's a much more conventional year in review than Vox's, as is WatchMojo's Top 10 Breaking News Stories of 2022.

These events were the most significant, culture-shifting, and/or shocking moments from 2022. For this list, we’ll be looking at the most impactful news items from the year. Our countdown includes Elon Musk Acquires Twitter, Johnny Depp & Amber Heard Trial, The Death of Queen Elizabeth II, and more!
I have three comments on this video. First, it did a good job of selecting and explaining its top ten stories. Second, that gave me more insight into the Depp and Heard civil trial, which I dismissed by writing "'SNL' also has 'I can't be all DOOM all the time' moods and needed some escapism" in Weekend Update compares this week's headlines to 'Mad Max' on last night's 'SNL'. It turned out to be a more significant story than I thought at the time and yet another example of a future blogging topic. Finally, this is yet another example of WatchMojo producing "high-quality, well-researched clickbait" that is worth sharing.

I close by returning to Time telling its viewers to Watch: A Tribute to Those We’ve Lost in 2022.

As 2022 comes to a close, we take a moment to reflect on Sidney Poitier, Olivia Newton-John, Queen Elizabeth II, and many more who left us in the past year.
R.I.P.

Stay tuned for one final retrospective on New Year's Eve.

Beyond The Trailer and WatchMojo look at the top movies and TV shows of 2022

I'm leaving science for entertainment with an updated and expanded version of last year's The best TV series of 2021 according to WatchMojo and IGN by adding movies to television, beginning with Grace Randolph of Beyond The Trailer listing her Top Ten Best Movies of 2022.

Top Ten Movies of 2022 today! Beyond The Trailer's best movies from Hollywood! How do full movies rank like Top Gun Maverick, Avatar 2?
...
Top Ten Best Movies of 2022 today! Beyond The Trailer host Grace Randolph gives a review of her Top Ten Movies of 2022 including a breakdown as to why each one made the cut! Find out where The Woman King, Puss in Boots 2 The Last Wish, Glass Onion A Knives Out Mystery, Nope, She Said, Black Panther Wakanda Forever, Top Gun Maverick, The Batman, The Black Phone and Avatar 2 The Way of Water land on this list!
Not a bad top ten. Now, how many of them are on WatchMojo's Top 10 Best Movies of 2022 and which movies make its list that didn't make Grace's?

2022 was an incredible year for film! For this list, we’ll be looking at feature films that captured the zeitgeist in 2022, standing out as the year’s best examples of pure cinema. Our countdown includes “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, “Avatar: The Way of Water”, “Top Gun: Maverick”, and more!
I'm not surprised that "Banshees of Inisherin" "The Fablemans," "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio," "RRR," and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" beat out "She Said," "Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish," "The Black Phone," "Nope," and "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery." WatchMojo gave "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" an honorable mention, while Grace justified her decision in a pinned comment to the video: "While I certainly respect Everything Everywhere All At Once, I didn't love it myself. So while I voted for it for Best Picture for Critics Choice, it's not on my list here." Fair enough.

Follow over the jump for Grace's and WatchMojo's picks for the year's top TV shows.

James Webb Space Telescope is the top science story of 2022

It's the last week of 2022, so it's time for me to look back at the year about to end with retrospectives until New Year's Eve. I'm changing up the order from previous years and beginning this year's series with the year in science. As I have all those years and more, I start my examination with Science Magazine's 2022 Breakthrough of the Year: JWST's golden eye sees the universe anew.

Not many telescopes get introduced by the president, but JWST, the gold-plated wunderkind of astronomy built by NASA with the help of the European and Canadian space agencies, deserves that honor. It is the most complex science mission ever put into space and at $10 billion the most expensive. And it did not come easy.
Science Magazine has more at 2022 Breakthrough of the Year on their website, including nine runners-up and three stories in a category I don't remember seeing before, Breakdowns of the Year. Those include the failure/discontinuance of Zero COVID in China, international conflicts and tensions affecting science cooperation among the major powers, and the war in Ukraine causing an increase in carbon dioxide emissions. I agree; none of these are good news.

WatchMojo compiled their own list of the Top 10 Biggest Scientific Discoveries of 2022.

These scientific discoveries will blow your mind! For this list, we’ll be looking at the most amazing things we learned through scientific research this year. Our countdown includes Brain Cells Playing Video Games, Footprints from the Ice Age, A Detailed View of the Distant Universe, and more! What do you think is the most significant discovery here? Are there any we missed? Tell us in the comments.
WatchMojo added an obvious top ten story in the comments and pinned it.
The discoveries keep coming! On December 13th, researchers announced that they'd managed to produce more energy from a fusion experiment than they'd put in, a groundbreaking step towards abundant clean energy!
That was only one day after WatchMojo uploaded the video. There is such a thing as being too soon. Just the same, I doubt nuclear fusion would have displaced the JWST from the top of either list.

Speaking of the JWST, this post makes for a second installment on the space telescope after Time introduces the 2022 Nobel Prize winners plus the Innovator of the Year for Nobel Prize Day. I plan on covering it again tomorrow for 2022 in space, along with the successful DART mission that made both Science Magazine's and WatchMojo's top ten. Stay tuned.

'Don't Look Up' has an all-star cast in a satire about climate change

For today's Sunday entertainment feature, I am following through on a promise I made in Politics, government, and diversity among movie nominees at the 2022 Golden Globes.
"Don't Look Up," "Licorice Pizza," and "West Side Story" all tie for the most nominated comedy or musical with four nominations each. The most political is "Don't Look Up," which uses a comet impact as a metaphor for the reaction to and inaction about climate change. This is right up my alley and I plan on writing an entry concentrating on the film.
I begin with DON'T LOOK UP | Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence | Official Trailer | Netflix.

Based on real events that haven’t happened - yet. Don’t Look Up in select theaters December 10 and on Netflix December 24.

DON’T LOOK UP tells the story of two low-level astronomers who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth. Written and Directed by Adam McKay.
As the trailer advertises, this movie truly features an all-star cast with five Oscar winners for acting, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, and Mark Rylance, two Oscar nominees for acting, Jonah Hill and Timothee Chalamet, the Oscar-and-Emmy-winning Tyler Perry, who earned those awards for his efforts behind the camera but who qualifies as a sixth Oscar winner, Golden Globe winners Ron Pearlman and Michael Chiklis, SAG Award winners Rob Morgan and Paul Guilfoyle, Grammy winners Ariana Grande and Scott Mescudi as Kid Cudi, Critics' Choice and SAG Award nominee Melanie Lynskey, and SAG Award nominee Himesh Patel. That's fifteen actors with major award wins and nominations, fourteen of whom share the nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

Sorry to say that IMDB does not list Paul Guilfoyle among the nominees. On the one hand, he is only in one scene, but his character's actions become a running joke for the rest of the movie. Because he could. Do my readers have a better answer?

Enough about the cast. What about the science? WatchMojo covers much of that in Top 10 Things Don't Look Up Got Factually Right and Wrong.

It's time to separate fact from fiction when it comes to "Don't Look Up". For this list, we’ll be looking at what the satirical sci-fi flick got right and wrong about climate change, as the Netflix film has drawn a lot of attention for its references to real life. Our countdown includes The Science Is Clear, The Next Gold Rush Will Be Critical Elements & Minerals, The Climate Crisis Is Just One Problem, and more!
That pretty much summarizes the accuracy of the science, at least regarding climate change. The movie's treatment of climate change was accurate enough that it won the Sloan Science in Cinema Prize. That's good enough for me.

For what it's worth, the human response to both the comet and climate change also matches that to the pandemic, which I find to be an unhappy accident, right down the misinformation, including from politicians. Sigh.

The cast earned another nomination for its cast at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, including Best Picture, Best Comedy, Best Original Screenplay, Best Score, and Best Original Song. The Society of Composers and Lyricists also recognized the score and song.

In addition, the Hollywood Music in Media Awards nominated the music for two comparable awards along with Best Original Song – Onscreen Performance. "Don't Look Up" won Best Original Score - Feature Film, but lost the song categories to Billie Eilish for Best Original Song and Best Original Song – Onscreen Performance to Emilia Jones singing "Both Sides Now" in "CODA." I predicted that Eilish would win the Golden Globe, so I'm not surprised. Since the Golden Globes did not nominate the song, here's Ariana Grande & Kid Cudi - Just Look Up (Full Performance Video) | Don't Look Up | Netflix to close out the entry.

The official "Just Look Up" full performance video by Ariana Grande & Kid Cudi from 'Don't Look Up', Adam McKay’s next comedy.
The song is on the Oscar shortlist, so break a leg to be nominated.

That's it for entertainment. I'll return to reality tomorrow for a series of short posts. Stay tuned.

WatchMojo rewound YouTube again, Google's Year in Search, and top memes for New Year's Eve

Happy New Year's Eve! I told my readers what to expect in yesterday's Vox, TODAY, and ABC News look back at 2021.
Stay tuned for one last retrospective, a combination of Google's Year in Search and YouTube didn't rewind 2020, so WatchMojo did it for them to send off 2021. It's New Year's Eve and I want to throw a party, at least on this blog.
I'm starting the party with WatchMojo's YouTube Rewind 2021.

YouTube is STILL not doing a Rewind! In October, Youtube announced that not only would they not be making a YouTube Rewind for 2021, but that they will stop making YouTube Rewinds entirely. So we decided to make one for them...again! 2021 was stacked with epic videos, trailers, trends, and announcements, including Sora Comes to “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate”, Logan Paul vs. Floyd Mayweather, ”Resident Evil Village” Release, and more! What was your favorite video of 2021? Let us know in the comments!
I'll miss YouTube's official rewinds; they were a lot of fun. I'm glad WatchMojo, producers of "high-quality, well-researched clickbait," picked up the slack so I could continue my year-end tradition.

WatchMojo continued with Top 10 YouTube Channels of 2021.

2021 has seen a lot of really great YouTube Channels grow and succeed. For this list, we’ll be looking at YouTubers you suggested and voted for on our community poll. You told us who you wanted to see and here are your favorite content creators! Our countdown includes Arcade Crainiacs, Mark Rober, Dead Meat, CrankGamePlays, and more! Did we miss a YouTuber that really impressed you in 2021? Let us know in the comments!
Unlike last year's video, which only mentioned one channel I knew, this year's lists three, First We Feast, PewDiePie, and Good Mythical Morning. In addition, the host of Mr. Beast looks familiar, even though I didn't know his channel name. The channel I most want to watch of all of them is Mark Rober. His videos look both fun and educational.

I close out WatchMojo's YouTube lists for this year with Top 10 Most Liked YouTube Videos of All Time.

To say that people enjoyed these YouTube videos would be a massive understatement. For this list, we’ll be looking at videos with the most likes on the video sharing platform! Our countdown includes Ping Pong Trick Shots 3, Me at the Zoo, How Zach King Gets Away With Doing Graffiti, and more! Do you think these videos deserve the likes? Let us know what you think in the comments!
Dude Perfect, PewDiePie, and Mr. Beast all have videos in this top 10, which also showcases creators outside of the English-speaking world. YouTube is global. So are TikTok and Twitter. ABC News covered some of their most popular videos in 2021’s top memes.

ABC News’ Will Ganss shares the best and funniest internet moments of 2021, from Zoom cat lawyer to Gorilla Glue girl!
Ha ha!

I close with the other end-of-year tradition, Google — Year In Search 2021.

In a year that continued to test many, the world searched “how to heal” more than ever. Whether they’re taking care of mental health, honoring a loved one, or reuniting with family, people are finding ways to come back stronger than before.
Ah, the feels!

That concludes my blogging for 2021. Stay tuned for 2022. Happy New Year!

2021's top science stories from Science Magazine, WatchMojo, and Nerdist

After looking at 2021 in space, it's time for me to examine the year in science as a whole. I begin, as I have the past four years, with Science Magazine and Science’s 2021 Breakthrough of the Year: AI brings protein structures to all.

Bounty of new structures will forever change biology and medicine
...
0:00 Introduction
0:13 Runner-up: Ancient human DNA in soil
1:07 Runner-up: NASA lander detects Red Planet's core
1:56 Runner-up: Psychedelic treatment for PTSD
2:39 Runner-up: Potent pills boost COVID-19 arsenal
3:35 The 2021 Breakthrough of the Year: Protein structures for all
This top five list pretty much covered my scientific interests, biology, including paleontology and medicine, and space. All it needed was a story about the environment. That will be the subject of tomorrow's retrospective, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

The video above reflects the expert's opinions about what was important in science this year. Now for the first of two popular lists, beginning with WatchMojo's Top 10 Biggest Scientific Discoveries of 2021.

These scientific discoveries will shape the world for years to come. For this list, we’ll be looking at the most fascinating and significant things that scientists learned about the world in 2021. Our countdown includes The Maximum Human Lifespan, Complex Thoughts Mirror Fractals, New Organic Molecules on Mars, and more! What recent scientific discovery excites you? Tell us in the comments.
I'm going to be a good environmentalist by recycling my reaction from last year.
As much as I'm aware that WatchMojo and its sister channel MsMojo are premiere clickbait factories, at least they produce high-quality, well-researched clickbait, so I'm going to keep using their videos. Besides, this was a good list.
I'm not as sure about the next source whose video I'm embedding, Nerdist's The Best Tech and Science Breakthroughs of 2021 (Nerdist Now w/ Dan Casey).

With 2021 coming to an end, it’s time to look back on all the year’s most exciting and bizarre contributions in the world of science and tech. From monkey’s playing pong with their minds to helicopters on Mars, Dan’s here’s to break down everything you might have missed on today’s episode of Nerdist Now!
The one topic all three videos agreed on was NASA's exploration of Mars, although the scientists preferred Mars InSight to the popular journalists choice of Perseverance and Ingenuity. Give the latter time and I expect it will produce amazing scientific data to go along with its amazing technology.

Stay tuned for more retrospectives through to New Year's Eve.

The best TV series of 2021 according to WatchMojo and IGN

It's the last week of 2021, so it's time for me to look back at the year about to end with retrospectives until New Year's Eve. As I did for last year's edition of the final Sunday entertainment feature, I'm beginning with IGN's The Best TV Series of 2021: IGN's Nominations.

The world of television offered an embarrassment of riches in 2021. Whether it was a shocking twist or an unbelievable cameo, there was always a show that had us talking. With the year coming to a close, we've rounded up the best of the best TV shows 2021 had to offer.

From dangerous games that double as a commentary on modern-day capitalism to animated adaptations of online games, murder mysteries with a twist, meditations on religion through a horrific lens, MCU stories on the small screen, and much more, these are our nominees for the best TV series of 2021. Check out IGN's full list of TV awards for 2021 on IGN.com, but otherwise dig in here on our list of potential TV series of the year winners, including Arcane, Loki, Midnight Mass, Only Murders in the Building, Squid Game, Succession, Ted Lasso, The White Lotus, WandaVision, and What We Do in the Shadows.
I think that's a very good list. IGN chose the winner a week later in IGN's Best TV Series of the Year 2021.

Every year brings with it at least one new Netflix series that dominates the pop culture sphere for a few weeks, and 2021 was no exception. This year, everyone was obsessed with Squid Game, a bizarre yet fascinating dystopian survival drama slash fictional game show slash social satire.

It's tough to pin a series as weird as Squid Game down to just one genre... but the important thing is it's IGN's pick for the best TV series of the year 2021.

Like many great satires, Squid Game manages to be both completely ridiculous and wholly believable at the same time. Lee Jung-jae stars as Seong Gi-hun, a struggling South Korean man who becomes one of 500 participants who agree to take part in a series of potentially very lucrative games. Who wouldn't agree to play a few simple childhood games in exchange for ludicrous amounts of prize money? But there's always a catch, and the contestants quickly learn these games have literal life and death consequences.

Squid Game is easily one of the most unique additions to Netflix's library, but it's a show that clicks on a number of levels. Its central mysteries are reason enough to watch on their own: Who are these mysterious masked captors, and how does it benefit them to offer such a large payout for people who are down on their luck? Why not find a less sadistic way to be altruistic? And what could drive a person to be so desperate to willingly play in these games? The tightly paced nine-episode structure ensures we don't have to wait too long before the pieces start falling into place.

Watch the full video to learn why Netflix's Squid Game is the winner of IGN's Best TV Show of 2021 award.
It's been a while since I used the Hunger Games label. I going to revive it for "Squid Game."

WatchMojo produced its own top ten, but only for series premiering this year, so no "Succession," "What We Do in the Shadows," or, as the channel points out, "Ted Lasso." Watch Top 10 Best TV Shows of 2021 to see their picks for best new series of the year.

2021 has been a dynamite year for TV. For this list, we’ll be looking at 2021 shows that had us fully engrossed one minute and buzzing on social media the next. Given the sheer amount of quality out there, we’re only focusing on shows that premiered this year. Sadly, that means no “Ted Lasso” Season 2. Our countdown includes "Invincible" (2021-), "Mare of Easttown" (2021), "Squid Game" (2021), "WandaVision" (2021), and more! What’s your favorite show of 2021? Let us know in the comments.
WatchMojo's top show is "Arcane," not "Squid Game," reinforcing the point I make about awards shows that electorates matter. Speaking of which, "Arcane" has nine nominations at the Annie Awards, more than any other nominated TV program. In contrast, "Invincible" has only one and "The Bad Batch" none; the nominated Star Wars show is "Star Wars: Visions." I think that puts "Arcane" in the driver's seat for next year's Emmy Awards in the animated categories and maybe even next year's Saturn Awards.*

As for the best drama, I think that will go to "Succession" again. "Squid Game" will certainly earn Emmy nominations; the only question is whether it will do so in the Primetime and Creative Arts Emmy Awards or the International Emmy Awards. As CNet reports, it's eligible for both but can only compete in one, not both. I think it has a better chance at the TCA Awards for Best New Show where I expect it will compete with "Only Murders in the Building," which my wife and I enjoyed. That written, "Only Murders in the Building" has the same strengths and weaknesses as "The Flight Attendant." Both succeed as comedies while also being good thrillers and mysteries but both have the bad luck to be competing against "Ted Lasso," which I expect to win Outstanding Comedy Series again.

Stay tuned for more retrospectives of the year about to end through the rest of the week.

*I plan on covering this year's Saturn Awards winners on National Science Fiction Day, January 2, 2022.

YouTube didn't rewind 2020, so WatchMojo did it for them

One of my traditions on this blog is to post YouTube's Rewind of the year. Unfortunately for the tradition, YouTube didn't create one. Fortunately, WatchMojo did. Watch 2020 YouTube Rewind: The Video YouTube Didn't Make.

Miss YouTube Rewind this year? In November, YouTube announced that they would not be making a YouTube Rewind for 2020. So we decided to make one for them... 2020 saw a TON of notable YouTube videos and trends including Among Us, Mr. Beast, WAP, Hacksmith's lightsaber build and the PS5 and Xbox Series X reveals! You're welcome YouTube. What was your favorite YouTube video of 2020?
I think that was better than the real thing last year.

WatchMojo followed up with Top 10 Best YouTube Channels of 2020.

These channels lit up the internet in 2020. For this list, we’ll be looking at some of YOUR favorite YouTube channels that you’ve been watching in 2020, chosen through our poll. Our countdown includes jacksfilms, penguinz0, MrBeast Gaming, and more! Did your favorite YouTube channel make the list? Let us know who it is and why you love them in the comments!
I only know about one of these channels, Oversimplified, but all of them look like fun. As I wrote in The top science stories of 2020 from Science Magazine, WatchMojo, SciShow, and 'Nova' on PBS, "I'm aware that WatchMojo and its sister channel MsMojo are premiere clickbait factories, [but] at least they produce high-quality, well-researched clickbait, so I'm going to keep using their videos." The two videos I featured today serve as good examples of that.

As for what would have made a real YouTube rewind, watch Top Trending Videos of 2020 (US) and Top Music Videos of 2020 (US). I did use the number three top trending video in the U.S. for 'SNL' lampoons the debate, Trump's COVID diagnosis, and Supreme Court nomination in season premiere after winning six Emmy Awards, but I haven't seen the rest of them. Maybe I should at least look at Some Good News with John Krasinski, who also showed up in WatchMojo's rewind of 2020. I've heard nothing but good things about Krasinski's videos.

Stay tuned for one more retrospective of 2020.

The top science stories of 2020 from Science Magazine, WatchMojo, SciShow, and 'Nova' on PBS

After yesterday's The top TV shows of 2020 according to IGN, WatchMojo, and IMDB, I'm back to recycling ideas for retrospectives of 2020. Today, it's The top ten science stories of the year, itself a retread of 2018's Breakthrough of the year for 2018 from Science Magazine. As I have both years, I begin with Science Magazine's top ten list, 2020 Breakthrough of the Year.

Each year, editors and writers choose a top research achievement as Science’s Breakthrough of the Year. This year, that honor goes to the multiple COVID-19 vaccines that have succeeded in large human trials—and are now being deployed around the world. But there are a lot of other advances to talk about, from figuring out the origin of Fast Radio Bursts to the discovery of the earliest known figurative art. Check out a few of the runners-up candidates—and this year’s Breakthrough of the Year—in this video rundown.
Like everything else about 2020, something related to the COVID-19 pandemic was the top story. At least it was good news, not more horror and disaster.

Follow over the jump for the other videos showing the top science stories of the year about to end.

The top TV shows of 2020 according to IGN, WatchMojo, and IMDB

I'm continuing my retrospectives of 2020 with a theme that is more original than recycled, the top TV shows of 2020.* It's the last Sunday of the year, so I decided to write a real Sunday entertainment feature to celebrate.

The first video I'm sharing is the one with the best preview image, IGN's Best TV Series of the Year 2020 - Nominees.

So many people were stuck at home this past year, but fortunately, we all had the refuge of lots of good television to fall back on when we couldn't go out. From the return of The Boys (and The Seven) to the arrival of Margaret Thatcher and Princess Di on The Crown, our favorite TV shows in 2020 ran the gamut from outer-space Westerns to tales of omnibenevolent football coaches... and beyond.

Which brings us to our best TV series of 2020 nominations.
To recap, the shows IGN nominated as Best TV Series of the Year 2020 were "The Boys," "The Crown," "Devs," "The Good Place," "I May Destroy You," "Lovecraft Country," "The Mandalorian," "The Queen's Gambit," "Schitt's Creek," and "Ted Lasso." Most of those show up in the next two videos, beginning with WatchMojo's Top 10 Best TV Shows of 2020.

The best TV shows of 2020 got us through a crazy year. Our countdown includes "Ted Lasso," "The Last Dance," "The Mandalorian," and more! What's YOUR favorite show of 2020? Let us know in the comments!
While IGN stuck to live-action scripted series, both dramas and comedies, WatchMojo included two animated shows, "Rick and Morty" and "BoJack Horseman," and two documentary series, "The Last Dance" and "Tiger King," in their year-end best of 2020. They cast a much wider net when it came to best television of the year about to end than either IGN or IMDB, which took a different approach to Best Shows We Watched in 2020, going month-by-month instead of creating a top 10 list.

Join us on a journey through the TV series that caught our attention in 2020 and deserve to be binged for years to come. These are the shows we watched each month this year.
As the video pointed out, "The Witcher" actually debuted in 2019, so it isn't really from this year, even if a lot of people were watching it in 2020. Also, there are some shows that aren't in anyone else's top ten list, although this list had twelve, not ten, so two of them wouldn't be anyway.

For IMDB's actual top 10 lists of 2020's most popular TV shows, follow over the jump.

Today in climate change on YouTube

Sometimes, it feels like the universe is speaking to me.  Of course, it's just my newsfeed, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't listen.  Today, what it's telling me is that climate change is becoming more of a risk.  Here are the videos about climate change that appeared on my subscription page just today, beginning with WatchMojo's Top 10 Signs Climate Change Is Worse Than Ever.

Climate change is taking a serious toll on the planet earth, and whether is man-made or as a result of natural causes, there's no denying that it's worse then ever. WatchMojo presents the top 10 signs that climate change is worse than ever. Severe wildfires, melting glaciers and extreme weather rank amongst the top of these foreboding signs.

The case for colonizing space

I warned about what could go wrong with the future in Burning all fossil fuels could melt Antarctica.  What, from my perspective, could go right?  We could be able to continue to explore space.  WatchMojo explains why that would be a good idea in Top 10 Reasons To Live On Another Planet.

Space – not only the final frontier, but also humanity's future... if we so choose.
As I wrote in Stephen Hawking is a Crazy Eddie:
Dr. Hawking expresses the ultimate reason why I support space exploration.  Not only is it a sign of an advancing technological civilization, it's a way to avoid collapse altogether.  There are worse consequences from the archetypal science-fiction tragic plot of withdrawing from space than mere loss of technological superiority.  It could ultimately lead to extinction.
Follow over the jump for how another Crazy Eddie, Elon Musk, thinks we might be able to colonize Mars.
